    Approaching Potential Professors

Scarlett, you said something about this? I need more info.

I'm applying to PhD programs and this remark was the first I've heard that you're supposed to approach the professors in each department when submitting applications. What am I supposed to say to them? Should I contact all the professors or just the department head or who? I'll be doing this via email (I know the phone is supposed to be better, but I freak out and stutter when calling strangers on the phone, and I'm quite articulate in email). Should I be doing it now, or closer to the admission deadline in December, or when?

And what the hell do I SAY?!

All the advice I've received is in the other thread. I haven't done anything about it yet...I'm still working on building/reinstating my reference relationships.

If you're articulate in email and hate the phone (like me), I really feel you should do it via email. Or letter, maybe.

keep me posted, and I'll do the same!

I went looking for that thread but I couldn't find it. I'll dig a little deeper.

    Good luck to you!

I found the other thread. Apparently this isn't standard practice in the U.S., but it can't hurt. I'll do it anyway.
