Default Will I ever find my true calling?

Right now I am in cosmetology school. I love the artistic part of it and I truly enjoy doing hair and make-up. I like making people feel better about themselves. However, I go to a pretty high-end school with the help of financial aid. I am not wealthy. A lot of the girls I am in class with are wealthy or their parents are anyway. There is a lot of talk regarding name brands, expensive restaurants and other superficial bullshit. I look at the business as a form of art and a nurturing experience that can be enjoyed as opposed to trying to be something else or fit in into some lifestyle. Am I not superficial enough? I keep up with the trends and what not but it doesn't run my life. There is more to life than how you look. Am I in the wrong business?

I don't think so! Just my POV, but there are plenty of us who want to go to a salon/spa to be coddled a bit and made to feel pretty, not to throw money around or fit in. I HATE going to get my hair cut and some bimbo tries to insist I get a fashionable haircut, just because it is fashionable. This is part of what inspired me to grow my hair out! You might do well going into more of a natural/relaxation spa environment than a cutting edge salon. It sounds like you have a great attitude about cosmetology-don't be put off by those girls.

I know the feeling. It took me so long to sort out what I wanted to do and sometimes I meet people in my program and think 'ye gods! I'm not that good/not that interesting/ my speciality is boring'. But it's good to do what you love.

NO! Look at strippers!!! We are all very different from one another, coming from different backgrounds, dancing for different reasons. (Well, money of course, but that is true of any job.)

Your going to be a great cosmetologist and you're going to help a lot of people feel good about how they look. Don't worry bout a thing.

yes. Don't stress. You are among a lot of rich little girls. I felt like that at private school often.

Once you are out to go to whichever salon you want you will feel better.

That's pretty funny to me, because I wouldn't think if you were really affluent you'd be going to cosmetology school. Buying a boutique, maybe. They're probably all full of shit. Having enough money to pay beauty school tuition isn't a sign of massive wealth so you shouldn't feel like they're that much better off.

Oh honey, you're in the RIGHT business!!!! You have big heart & a ladylike manner
....Nothing makes me feel worse than a surly/snobby hairdresser or manicurist....I pay for their services & think, They probably didn't do their best..did they not like me? Needless to say, no repeat business for them....

I'll go ahead in say it- a lot of non-working class girls who end up in beauty school (with Mommy & Daddy footing the bill) are dumped there because they flunked out of regular university or got pregnant or some such stuff. They didn't pick it, they just ended up there.
SO don't let their dumb nattering get to you.

I hate feeling intimidated by the stylist. Its like a bad dream where I'm paying the girl who was mean to me in high school to fuck with my hair. No thanks, I'd rather have my hair appointment be relaxing. I just think that someone who is stylish, up on the trends, nurturing, and helpful is the best bet. I think with your attitude you'll do great!

Exactly. I wouldn't worry about it. I've never had a hairdresser or any type of person in a salon make me feel the way these girls make you feel. I did grow up going to a snotty private school and I doubt any of those bitches went to cosmetology school. So fuck 'em and do your thing. They just sound young and immature.

I feel that to find your true calling all you have to do is ask yourself, what is it you want to do? Easier said than done for some but thats how it is for me. I pick Nursing for the money and i dont mind the job. =) Do what floats your boat.

Ditto ! A "friend" of mine owns her own beauty salon or so she portrays..Later I found out her Daddy is the true owner. The salon is merely named after her and she sadly has to pay her Pops for booth rent .
The grass always look greener on the other side of the fence until you get close enough to see it's really astroturf !
Do you and don't worry about what anyone else is doing, you'll be a lot happier and more successful.

The irony is the most successful stylists look at this business the sme way you do! Seriously, look at respected platform artists- technical, artistic, and inspirational speakers of the beauty industry stress that the key component to being in the top 20% of the business is to realize that it's about more than aesthetics...

In order to do well in any service industry you must be able to relate to people and make their expierience personal. Most people are intimidated when they walk into a salon. Although persenting yourself in a professional matter is very important, most clients could care less if your shoes are Prada or Payless... They want someone who they are comfortable with and who is proficient- and they want it in that order.

Let those girls at school continue to bullshit... they're effin' 80%ers.
