    Default Quitting smoking cold-turkey

I've been smoking on and off since I was 20. I know, I started when I was old enough to know better. I've quit for more than a year at a time, and even when I smoked in the past it was maybe at most 5-10 cigarettes a day, often at work when I danced.

I started smoking again last November after my ex told me his crack whore alcoholic girlfriend was knocked up and it quickly ballooned into a full-on pack a day habit.

I haven't had a cigarette in over a week, and it helps that I'm no longer dating a smoker, since the last guy I dated more recently smoked.

I wanted to ask if any of you have tried this and if you've had long-term success with it. Also, what's triggered you to light up again after you may have stopped for anything from a few days to a few years?

I've been cutting down on my drinking lately anyway, but am making more of an effort now since it's a lot easier to want to smoke after having a few drinks. I also miss the ritual aspect of it. Last night I was out at dinner with a friend who smokes, and the meal and her company were so great, it totally would have been a perfect time for a cigarette after the dinner. But I held off.

Cross your fingers and hope it sticks...

    Hi Nina,
I quit in 2001 after 6 or 7 years at 1-2 packs a day and the only things that have really tempted me is extended contact around smokers, or drinking. I still want a cig BAD if I'm getting drunk. Its no problem for me to be around someone who smokes 1 or 2, but if I am around someone who smokes continuously like I used to it really gets to me.

The habit is really hard for a year or two. I used to pretend to inhale, kinda like I was smoking, and that helped. Also, sucking on cough drops or mints can help. Having something to do with my hands was the toughest though, I never found anything to help with that. Maybe someone else has some advice for that.

After dinner I switched to coffee. If I'm out with friends who are smoking, they have a cig and I caffeinate myself, better for you and gives you energy.

Hang in there! You can do it!

I quit (again) two nights ago. Every time I quit smoking I do it cold turkey with varying degrees of success. My triggers are typically stress and drinking, neither of which are going away so I'm just going to try to be extra strong. Good luck to you!

A week is a really long time for someone who usually smokes a pack a day. Think about it, that's 140 cigarettes that you didn't smoke! Some friends of mine used a website that gave the breakdown of how smoking helps you by the day, week, year, etc. I'm looking for it and will post it asap.

^ is this what you are looking for?

20 minutes after quitting: Your heart rate and blood pressure drops.

12 hours after quitting: The carbon monoxide level in your blood drops to normal.

2 weeks to 3 months after quitting: Your circulation improves and your lung function increases.

1 to 9 months after quitting: Coughing and shortness of breath decrease; cilia (tiny hair-like structures that move mucus out of the lungs) regain normal function in the lungs, increasing the ability to handle mucus, clean the lungs, and reduce the risk of infection.

1 year after quitting: The excess risk of coronary heart disease is half that of a smoker's.

5 years after quitting: Your stroke risk is reduced to that of a nonsmoker 5 to 15 years after quitting.

10 years after quitting: The lung cancer death rate is about half that of a continuing smoker's. The risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, cervix, and pancreas decrease.

15 years after quitting: The risk of coronary heart disease is that of a nonsmoker's.

Yes! That's part of it, but I'm also looking for the one that tells you in terms of money saved and things like that.

i don't really think i was addicted, b/c it was so easy..... and now, if I'm drinking and have 1 it's no biggie, it's just 1.

Drinking has always been a trigger for me to light up, but you already mentioned that one.

    Good luck!

Keep going! You can do it!!

I smoked a pack a day from the time I was 14 til I got pregnant at age 26. I quit cold turkey upon hearing the news of my pregnancy.

I have not smoked a cigarette in 6-7 years. I feel so much better now than I did before. I can breathe and run and keep up with my child. I still craved them after a year of quitting, but after 2 years with no cigarettes I started being repulsed by them. Today, I HATE cigarettes now and I cannot stand to be near them. I know now that I will never smoke again. Ever.

You just have to avoid people/situations that could trigger the habit. Even to this day I don't drink -except on special occasions-and even then I still hate cigs. Because I have been avoiding them for so long, resisting them is much easier to do.

Take it day by day, craving by craving. Eventually you will not even think about them anymore. You may even grow to hate them. THE REWARDS FOR QUITTING ARE TREMENDOUS. Good things come to those who respect their health!

Good luck, and stick with it. You can do it!

Still smoke-free! Thanks for the encouragement ladies, it's very much appreciated.

It helps that one of my best friends is also quitting now, so we're encouraging each other.

Also, after my whole disastrous experience with Geodon, I don't want to do anything else that could fuck with my heart, even though so far it looks like there isn't permanent damage from the Geodon.

I did have numerous cocktails with a friend on Friday night, and even though she smokes, I still didn't have one.

I've definitely been trying to take it one day at a time, and that's been helping. I'm proud of myself for each day I go without one.

I'm planning to go back on birth control so I can give myself an immediate reason to quit.
