Default How do you recycle and reuse?

I hate waste, so I try my best to "recycle" things as often as I can. For example: I recycle my cans and bottles, I try to use up leftovers (last night I took the leftover chicken and made a homemade chicken pot pie) and I try to reuse stuff such as gift bags. One time, I went to a friend's child's birthday party and put the gift in a VERY large brand new gift bag. I inwardly cringed as they used this lovely gift bag as a trash receptacle! I was thinking, "omg I would have totally saved that and reused it!"

What do you guys do to reduce waste? I need some new ideas.

We recycle all plastic, cans, glass, and paper. And I keep plastic bottles that I've gotten while out or other plastic I use while away from home. It makes me cringe to see all of the waste that we have every night at the bar.......and then multiply that by the number of bars, restaurants, hotels, and other places that don't even consider recycling. It really is so easy to just put things in a different trash bag, but people are so apathetic.

I recycle everything....plastic bottles, paper-- any paper, glass, aluminum cans, everything. I reuse water bottles, even though it's bad for you, but I only do it 2-3 times. I use a reusable shopping bag to go shopping. I don't drive. I walk and take public transit everywhere. .. well that's not really recycling or reusing it's reducing.. but same thing

We recycle cans, bottles, cardboard boxes. Boyfriend refills water bottles with the Britta pitcher, I have my own water bottle that I drink out of all day that I fill out of the Britta so I don't create any waste from water bottles. We also save plastic bags and take them to the dog beach when we get a bunch--they have a place there to put them, then people can use them to pick up poop. I save and reuse moving boxes, or donate them to someone that can use them. I also have washable boobie pads (for leaky boobs!), but unfortunately, they're just not as effective as the disposables, so I don't use them as often as I should.

OTOH-I use alot of paper towels. BAD, BAD, BAD!

I do that too ! I recycle everything I possibly can, papers, plastic, textiles, everything. You'd be surprised how much gets tossed that can be recycled. I take my own bags when I go shopping and I bought a Prius to balance my SUV.

We recycle everything we can. We have a 50 gallon recycling bin that we take to the curb (full) every week.

On the construction site we separate construction waste into the proper categories and recycle that, too.

I take my own bags to go shopping.

I reuse boxes for mailing things.

We donate my stepson's sporting equipment to charity every year (he is growing fast!).

I wash my car at car washes that use recycled water (gray water).

I only drive when necessary (tools for construction aren't easy to put in a back pack).

I get my oil changed at a garage that recycles it.

My house is lighted with compact florescent bulbs.

I use all biodegradable and non toxic household cleaners.

    I buy organic food.

I only dine out on occasion. Maybe twice a month.

I ride my bike/walk a lot. The guys who work at the bike shop are soooooo Hot!

I use natural fertilizers and mulch in my yard. Ladybugs make a great pesticide, and they are cute, too!

*Someone said something about recycling textiles. How do I find a place to recycle that?

I'm the one who started the Worm Farm thread

I want more than one yet for now one is fine and dandy for me.

We have plenty of those green shopping bags so as to restrict use of plastic bags (I also have two packet in my luggage for use when away from home).

If we do use plastic bags for shopping, then we re-use them as bin liners and/or for any waste that has be "bagged".

Gradually changing all the bulbs over to the more "friendly" versions.

My household use the "yellow bin"

I don't have too much food waste as I usually only cook what I know I will eat.

I try to keep my use of my car to when necessary and/or when doing multiple errands plus keep it serviced.

I try to buy and/or support companies that are "enviromentally friendly"

    I don't smoke.

The kitty litter is used on the garden. The cat poo can be put in with the worms (as long as the cat isn't on worming medication) or I put it the garden.

I'm not perfect by a long shot tho' I do what I can do.

I recycle pretty much everything. I also use green energy and a rain water tank. I use efficient lightbulbs and low-water washing machines.

    Oh yeah. Environmentalist, baby.

(Okay, not really. I just do it.)

These are great ideas. I don't think I could do a worm farm though.

Well, I recycle. We have a blue bin that you can put in to recycle: glass, plastic, paper, aluminum. They pick up on garbage day.
I have a small composter, (wish it was larger, gotta work on that). I take foods like chicken bones, melon rinds, etc. & leave out for racoons. They eat/take everything! I also need a rain barrel, but I use various empty washed containers, for rainwater to water when needed. Bunny droppings go in yard/plants. Bunny eats the dandelions from yard. When I buy mussels, I save shells, crunch 'em up & add to plant soil.

I put it my recycling bin but, I've seen random metal bins for recycling clothes and textiles @ strip malls.

^so what happens to it in the freezing winter and snow?

And forgive me GCG, I keep thinking about the movie Dumb & Dumber...did you see that one?

Lloyd: This isn't my real job, you know.
    Mary: No?
Lloyd: Nope. My friend Harry and I are saving up money for a pet store.
    Mary: That's nice.
    Lloyd: I got worms!
    Mary: I beg your pardon?
Lloyd: That's what we're gonna call it. I got worms! We're gonna specialize in selling worm farms. You know, like ant farms.

this is interesting though I'll keep it in mind, as long as I don't have to put my hands in it.

You don't have to put your hands in it ever tho' I love playing with the worms. Plus you do need to move the soil around sometimes so as to keep it airated (sp?) thus easy for the worms to move around within.

You can even wear gardening gloves if you so desire if you don't want to get your hands in the dirt amongst the worms.
