I'm sure if they explained thier situation to the prospetive employer they may have some sympathy and just tell them to come back at a certain time as opposed to calling them back.

Wow. That's gotta be cool.
In the two states I've had to get IDs in, you have to show several items.
For NY:
If you do not have a NYS driver license or or a NYS learner permit that is now valid or that was valid in the last two years, you must show proof of identity that equals a value of six points, your proof of date of birth and your Social Security Card.
It's a HUGE list of what equals what points... so here's the url for that:
http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/idlicense.htm#idpoints
For FL:
Florida law requires identification, proof of date of birth and social security number (if issued) from all customers before a driver license or identification card can be issued. Each U.S. citizen who applies for an original driver license or identification card must submit:
One of the following (3) documents:
1. Certified United States birth certificate, including territories and District of Columbia; or
2. Valid United States passport; or
3. Certificate of Naturalization
4. Effective April 10, 2002, United States Military ID cards with an officer rank will be accepted as proof of citizenship only; however, not as proof of primary identification.
5. NOTE: Proof of citizenship or legal presence may be required for renewal, duplicate or replacement licenses. Please come prepared to present one of the above identification documents as proof of citizenship or legal presence.
And a secondary document, which substantiates the primary document, is required. Document may include, but is not limited to, the original or certified copy of one of the following:
1. School record stating date of birth, which must contain the registrar’s signature.
2. Transcript of the birth record filed with a public officer charged with the duty of recording certificates.
3. Baptism certificate, which shows date of birth and the place of baptism.
4. An insurance policy on the customer’s life which has been in force for at least two years and has the month, day and year of birth.
5. United States military or military dependent identification card.
* Effective April 10, 2002, United States Military ID cards with an officer rank will be accepted as proof of citizenship only; however, not as proof of primary identification.
6. Florida or out-of-state driver license, valid or expired.
7. Florida license record or identification card record.
8. Selective Service Registration (Draft Card).
9. Florida Vehicle Registration certificate (HSMV 83399, owner’s copy) obtained from the tax collector’s office where the customer’s vehicle was registered, Florida, or out-of-state registration certificate, if name and date of birth are shown.
10. Florida and out-of-state non-driver identification cards (state issued).
11. Receipt copy of your last Florida driver license issuance.
12. Immigration form I-571.
13. Federal form DD-214 (military record).
14. Marriage certificate.
15. Court order, which includes legal name.
16. A Florida voter registration card, which was issued at least 3 months previously.
17. Personal identification by an examiner or by a person well known to the examiner.
18. Social Security Card.
19. Family bible record or birth announcement in baby book.
20. Parent consent form of minor.
21. Out-of-country driver license or identification card, government issued
I dunno about any of ya'll who have also been homeless... and the non-couch bouncing kind... but I didn't have any of that crap. I dunno many homeless who do.
And legal ID aside. It is VERY hard to fake having an address and phone number for a job application. Not many jobs will want to hire someone who "doesn't have a phone right now". It makes it hard for them to contact you and it doesn't make you look all that good in their eyes.
And let's take a look at the average homeless person in the 25-45 year age bracket for a moment. If they've been homeless for a long time? No previous work experience to note since like what? 10? 20 years ago? Not gonna get hired, 8 out of 10 times. References? Probably no one. Jimbo who sleeps under the bridge downtown won't be an acceptable reference.
And because of the "all homeless are crazy and/or addicts" stereotype, not many employers are gonna want to hire you if you admit that you are without permanent residency.
Also keep in mind that if you weed out the homeless folks who have mental illnesses, including ones that led to *gasp* addiction, that kinda leaves them holding the SOL bag when it comes to finding a job and functioning at said job.

Marek says, "A friend of mine got punched in the face by a dominatrix stripper about two weeks ago and I thought of you."

Haha^ Like that scene in 'Trading Places'. It reminds me of a true story, a friend was approached at racetrack, by a 'handicapped' man w/a cane. He later saw the man straighten up, throw the cane in a brand new Caddy.
Anyway, I rarely get approached. I wouldn't give out any $.

I give change if I can spare it, if not I politely tell them I can't. I think of the courage it would take for me to ask a stranger for coins and also just how horrible it must be to be at the mercy of the elements. I don't give a fuck if they're drug addicts. If I was homeless, who's to say I wouldn't be, too?

Some of the replies in this thread make me sick to my stomach.
Remember..."there but for the grace of God, go I" (whether you believe or not, it's a good way to see life).
I give money whenever I can. Usually, it's just enough to get a cup of coffee or something.
I'd rather be panhandled than have someone who needs it go without. Why punish the truly needy because of the dishonest?
I ask them to do something- like dance, sing, get naked, whatever. If I had to work for the money then they should too.
Once in Key West I took a homeless man named Kenny Lee from his spot in front of Fast Buck Freddie's and asked him what he made in a night. I gave him that much money and took him to the Green Parrot. He became embarrassed because it's a locals bar and the locals knew that he was homeless. he left in a hurry. I found him on someone's porch with his guitar. He took off again, leaving his bag with everything he owned in my trunk. I felt so bad but didn't know where to find him. I asked around to all the homeless people but noone knew him. I never did see Kenny Lee again. Cool guy.
I have GOT to quit looking at this thread it's pissing me off beyond fucking belief.
I would NEVER ask a homeless person to get naked to earn a quarter! talk about ruthlessness.
Here's the thing. I was homeless because i was sexually abused
I know a ton that were homeless because they had serious mental health probelms and weren't able to afford care or their familes simply couldn't help them either.
And for those that are on Drugs and drinking their "lives" away, before you go into exploiting a few ...try and remember you don't knwo where in the fuck your life might end up.
& you don't know how theirs got that way.
POINT IS DON"T FUCKING JUDGE!
IT sickens me..yes physically sickens me that on this board alone, where we are all fighting stereotypes some of you are going off and judging people you don't know and stereotyping them !
Shit is not fucking fair. And here's a simple solution, don't pay any attention to them if you don't agree with their way of life. But don't go around exploiting or being an asshole.
You are no better than a customer that comes in and waves a 20 and wants you to grind his dick till your pussy chafes . Because he worked for that 20 and by god you will too.
This all reminds me of that part in the American Psycho book where Patrick batemen fucks with the homeless guy.
If anything this thread has completely shown the true character of some people on this board. And personally, I no longer feel sorry for some of the foul shit that happens to them at work or in their personal life.
People want compassion and not to be judged yet aren't willing to do the same for others.
Karma is a mother fucker

^ yep exactly.
& to think she's proud of this.
i give. its 5 bucks max, and i think that whatever that person needs it for is more important then i need it. if its drugs alcohol whatever its not my concern, its that i helped them, and did a small thing that could hopefully help them out.

Thank you. I have been that person that could not afford to get the things I needed and I got sick. Really sick. It had nothing to do with being lazy or addicted to drugs, it had to do with the fact that I was ill with nowhere to go because I had no insurance. I slept in my car for a few weeks, and the only reason I had that was because it was paid off. It took more than a month for me to get my Medicaid, and once it kicked in I could get the things I needed to get myself together again. That month was probably the saddest time of my life so far.
I never thought I would be that person, but I was for a short period of time.
Maybe that's why I do feel bad for homeless people, because I've been on that side of the fence and I know how shitty it is.
Im trying so hard not to make snide rude comments.
Anyways,no one on this earth is immune from losing it all. be it mentally or money wise.
NO ONE.
Things can spiral out of control before you know it. Shit I lived in shelters only during the time I was pregnant with my first child, because they had shelters for unwed teenage mothers. I left there promptly because obviously they wanted me to hand over my son. I knew all I needed was something with a bit more money and I could afford anything.
I was working, however .. it was for 4.15 an hour and you can't afford to rent shit on that kind of money. And I had to take horrid jobs no one else wanted due to the fact I was really young and also because I had no license yet.
People take advantage of the poor and the homeless , sometimes so much so it's easier to pan handle than to put yourself in situations where you aren't making a living but only "working " so people will shut the fuck up about it all. And so that you can get some kind of assitance
AND THESE SAME PEOPLE that hate on homeless are the same fucking assholes that comment about their money they pay in taxes to those on welfare..
Get a god damn clue, you can't even get welfare unless
1. you are on SSI
2. you are working somewhere !!!
& welfare replaces your paycheck btw.. so there's no point.
It's ignorant people that are quick to talk shit but not take the time to realize how the system works.
And I had to live in a car as well gingerNothing worse than when ti's -10 degrees, shelters are full and you are attempting to stay warm. I had to do this shit with a newborn..heating baby bottles using my own body heat and those tube things that attatch to the cigerette lighter to heat it up as well.
Not a great moment in my life, but it didn't make me a person worth being exploited or spoke down to . I simply didn't have a hand to help me and I had to start with ZERO and go up.
Not everyone has people willing to loan them money, or mommy and daddy to get them out of trouble.
Did I fail tp mention I was living out of hotels at the time myself?
You know what?
Whatever. I don't have time for this bs.

motels!! you call that homeless??
when i moved up from streets to motels i felt like the queen of england. hot water, power, cable tv a phone and bed if you think homeless is living in a motel than you must be like paris hilltons sorry ass twin or something.truly fucking spoiled
I Luv my Daddy
Wow, I've learned a lot from this thread. Tart, thank you for sharing. Paige, I'm terribly interested in your story too, if you're comfortable to discuss.
The more I learn about people and life, the more humbled I am. And yes, I give. Not every time, because we have to many homeless people in Austin, but when I can.
There is a lady who pandhandles at the intersection near my house. She is so sweet, I help her regularly.

I dont think it's so much about giving is it is about compassion for other peoples situations.
It's awesome when we can spare food, clothing and money. But, it's honest to god just respecting the over all situation
They are still people.
And what made me more than happy. Is when people would pass me and say hi. rather than ignore me. Or when I'd get a " hello, how are you " in passing
Or even " what's your name"
shit like that matters almost as much as food. because you MEANT something right then.
I didnt want pity and I dont think a majority do. They are trying to survive just like the rest.
are there those that take advantage of their position. Of course. There are those kinds of people in every walk of life.
But its ignorant and judgmental to base an entire group of people based on limited knowledge and or the bad ones.
This same advice is what we give guys that come on here and talk shit.
A hotel is like heaven. Shit tha'ts better than a crappy apt!
You know my moment of feeling like I made it was living in a skid row motel, sitting on the floor with a 1.5 month old infant with a fake ID because at that moment in time , I was safe,...had a roof over my head. A sink in my room and now the ability to get a job as a fucking stripper to make enough cash to get us up outta there.
this is the same kind of thinking most street walkers have. And people look down on them. Let me just share something because Im so worked up over this its insane.
when girls or boy for that matter run away really young..what do you think they do to feed themselves ? I gave handjobs to OLD men as a 13 year old girl. Because to me that was better than being home and having my sick uncle coming over and fucking with me and NO ONE believing me. Unfortunatly there are a lot of women and men that get stuck in that lifestyle because after awhile you get arrested and before you get arrested you get into drugs because it's the only thing that gets you through the fucking day. And once you have those two factors, who the hell is going to hire you..and after that who's going to trust you and after that who on earth will ever respect you? Many people stay in that situation not because it's easy but because what other real choice in the matter do they have?
Sure they can get sober, but that takes a lot of work. Not that it isn't worth it. Because it is. But overall it takes believing that you are BETTER than what you've been subjecting yourself to and around . And realizing you did what you had to , to survive. Sometimes, it's worse being sober and alone with your thoughts about it though.
Then when it comes to a job, what in the hell do you say you've been doing? To be honest is great, but lets be real here.. we know just from stripping which is NOTHING compared to walking the track that it's not easy getting anyone to understand that we aren't below them.
In the end the only way of life that they can't fail at and that they do know how to contrive and survive is the streets. whether they are walking it or living on it.
