I still am shaking over the "I make them work for it" comment. Make them sing/dance/get naked because you worked hard for those dollars? Jesus.

There' something nauseating about making a person who is starving, possibly ill, give up the only thing they have left (dignity) to entertain you for a dollar or two to get some food.

I've always been very lucky. I know that if something terrible happened, and I had no place to live and couldn't work, I have friends and family who would help me. I wouldn't starve, I wouldn't sleep on the street. But I KNOW how unbelievably lucky I am, and it makes me want to help. I have never known what it's like to seriously go hungry; and because of that, I try to make sure that no one else does either, if I can help it.

I live in Maine...and not in the city, so I rarely see homeless people. Most of the homless here are in Portland. On the rare occasion that I do get him up for spare chang or see a homeless person, I try to give what I can. Or if I just visited dunkin donuts, I'll give them some food. Most people arent homeless because they up and decided it would be the cool thing to do one day. Theres usually a reason. I don't remember the song...it parodies a lot of things (strippers inclued) and has a part about a man telling ahomeless guy to "get a job"...then goes into McDonalds having a "no underwear on the outside" policy. Its true...its not going to be easy to find a job when your beard reaches your nipples and your carrying plastic bags of cans. And like it was mentioned above, if some of my money gets spent on booze or drugs...big deal...its not like I've never bought bad things.

And Tart, I agree with what you said about seeing someone dope sick...I've never been there myself...but I've seen friends who have...at that point another fix isnt going to make a huge difference in "getting them clean", but it will make life at least liveable for the time being.

That aside we do have a man where my bf's shop is, that walks up and down the street with a sign that either says "need money for food", or "need money, lost". He lives down the street and comes in here weekly to buy dirty movies...

I also feel the need to mention Mr. Butch from Boston..I never met him, but my sister told me about him. I guess he was a big part of Boston. A homeless 6 foot tall rasta man. He died not too long ago, he saved up and bought a scooter and crashed it . They always shared joints and cigarettes and food with him. He sometimes carried a sign that said "will have sex for sandwhichs." He was truly an amazing person from what I've heard....homeless was just part of his lifestyle.
My sister fist met him when she was 16 i think. Her and her friends had snuck to a concert, in December or something, and missed the train home. He had them come squat with him in the old house he was squatting at because it was cold and no one would mess with them there. That was 20 or so years ago. I got teared up when she told me about it, and never even met him .

Hey, don't you love it when youre on stage and a guy wags his $1 and says "you gotta work for this dollar!". Thats what youre doing to these homeless people...only ten times worse.

I do have a question for you guys, though...Tart, Paige...anyone else who was in this kind of situation. When there were people that gave something to you, was there something you appreciated most? Something in particular or money?

I love to help people out when I'm able to, and I'd just like some opinions from you guys on what really helped or meant the most.

I think my biggest "gift" because that's what money, food etc actually was to me. A blanket. I don't know if maybe that's why I constantly acquire , horde and stash em' now or not. I have on seriously everywhere. including my car!! But there's a lot to be said about recieving a non bulky blanket.

Oversized jackets were a blessing since a lot of times you have to wear most of what you own so it's not stolen.

Backpacks were great, obviously for carrying things

But once this woman ( and I'll never ever forget this ) asked me random questions like my name and when my birthday was. come around the time of my bday she gave me a card.

No money or anything in it. But I broke down and cried. it made me feel really good about being alive that day. And changed how I saw people.

The worst things you can give, .. cans of anything. heavy..not easily opened. And when you get robbed by assholes they use em as weapons.

First off, Kenny told me he made $300/night playing his guitar in front of Fast Buck Freddy's. He did this every single night. I thought maybe he needed a night off so I offered to give him what he's make in a night. He happily obliged. I assume a person who makes $300/day can afford some sort of shelter. He chose to spend his money on booze. And yeah I felt real bad about having his duffel bag. That's why we drove around for hours around Key West talking to all the other homeless people. I looked for Kenny every time I went to Key West after that and never could find him. I did write that earlier but I guess you chose to overlook it.

And I've slept in my car PLENTY of nights. I'm not comparing myself to a homeless person because I'm not. In fact I am spoiled. I live in a HUGE house that I pay very little for. I live next to my Mom's business. In fact, I don't dance as of two mos ago because I don't have to. My parents give me whatever I need that my bartending job doesn't pay for.

    So f-ing what.

Does that make me better than anyone? Absolutely not. That's just me. Love me or hate me, it's my world.

Off to my bartending job at my Mom's bar next door to my lovely house.

Umm I did shake my ass for that dollar. Why on earth would I give my hard earned money away? At least do something for it. it doesn't have to be hard.

It would never occur to me to make someone work for a charitable impulse. Nor would it ever occur to buy someone food rather than give them the cash. I mean, for one thing, that is way, way more trouble. For another, if the person is a schizophrenic alcoholic he or she really needs the booze more than the food. Again - charitable impulse. It does not give me the right to run their life for them.

Further this thing with "every/several/most panhandlers are wealthy people" - urban myth, people.

no you didnt. you dont dance anymore, remember? because mommy gives you everything you want.

im far from hard off, i am spoiled to some people. sure, my parents loan me money for anything i cant pay at the moment. but its a loan. and that is for bills for my apt and shit, not my credit cards if i choose to run them up to the point that i cant pay them. my parents pay part of my rent, and that's only til i finish school. and they pay most of my school loans. i know how lucky i am, and i would never brag about being spoiled like you just did. i just have a totally different impression of you now.

People that brag in my experience are lonely bitter shit stains. And only brag to make other people feel bad.

You can't buy personality , compassion or awesomeness which is obviously apparent in this thread.

I have it good too, for the record.. Because I made shit that way..

But I got this lil' thing call pride. My dad is rich too..He worked his ass off for his money. I could easily sit around and do nothing and let him save me from stripping .god knows he'd like to. But too bad it's Time to do my bit in this world.

There is NOTHING wrong with parents helping their child through school etc. I have kids and wouldn't think twice about it. But there is something wrong with kids taking advantage of their parents.

People taking advantage of their parents love , are NO better than these homeless that "take advantage" that they are referring to. Or those abusing the welfare system that they cry about .

They are actually probably worse considering they are given all the advantages of life and choose to be a lazy mooch .

PS brit I LOVE your signature lol!!

My parents help me so I don't have to struggle AS hard as I do. Them helping me with a few things keeps me out of the strip clubs at 31. It's not time for me to run the business yet so I make shit for money until then. My Mother & Father worked very hard so that I didn't have to go through hardships. I work for everything they give me btw. Think whatcha want..

Man... this post inspired me to get a bunch of my friends together to buy blankets for the homeless down the street. The world is so mean, I have so much, and all they want is food and warmth.

one time, when i was new to dallas, I was eating in a McDonalds parking lot (daytime) and one came up and knocked on my window. I had never really seen a homeless person before and was scared, i ignored him and kept eating. He banged on my window really hard and told me to I was a bitch and nobody fuckin ignores him, he ran away and I was scared he would return so I left asap.

^ Yah we have a few of those that irritate the shit out of me. People shouldn't

    1. interrupt me while Im eating ..PERIOD
    2. walk in the midst of traffic or hold up traffic lights begging for change.

I hate that shit. I'm tolerant of a lot. But people that do that shit do it to annoy you into doing something FOR THEM.

Anyone in life that does that..homeless, rich etc is in the wrong.

And yes people know right from wrong. And no one has to be rude.

I usually don't go too far into the story... Both times I was living in and around Grand Central... both between the time I was 14 and 18. It was a combination of getting out of the mental health system's so-called residentials... a lot of emotional issues... poor medicational choices... I kinda lost my head and took off. If I have really bad panic attacks, the urge to flee takes over. Usually for the day or such, but those two times... I just took off. Didn't try to go back. Didn't know if I could. Then, once I was out there, the outright fear of being caught and sent back to said "residentials" was so strong...

This might sound weird... but the best thing ever for me was if someone bought me soup. Just soup. I got my veggies and meat.... and rehydration.

Once time a lady who was heading through Grand Central on her way home after Christmas? She actually sat her suitcase down, rummaged through it, and gave me a sweater and two pairs of winter socks. That was just mind blowing to me. I told her that I felt bad cause I don't sing or play the bucket or anything fancy for it... and she didn't want a thing. She said that she hated to see kids end up cold.

Another great gift, well it was a gift to me.... was that some of the adult homeless folks I slept near actually DID try to help me out. They taught me where to sleep, when to sleep, where to ask for change, what shops wouldn't kick me out even if I HAD money for food... how to bathe, how to deal with everyday shite like menstruation and headaches....

^ Same here! When I was on the greyhound traveling to NY when I ran away these kids that were squatters in Philly told me about a place in NY Icould stay dry..find other people to squat with etc.

They actually were on their way there and we went to the now defunct NASA. They were filming the movie KIDS there that day ..sorta ironic now. But thanks to them I knew what to tell people and what to lie about.. where not to sleep and the names of people to stay away from.

I was 12.5 roughly ..had packed barbies in my fucking suitcase and literally had never did anything remotely close to what I was about to get myself into.

Unfortunatly these same kids told me doing heroin ( up the nose ) was not only a sure bet to stay away from ODing and also kept me warm and would help me fall asleep at night so that I could get up and work early work shifts .

Paige I think we are around the same age. Odd we were in the same areas..weird if we knew one another then
