    Default Owning a Gun

Is it true that if you're a gun owner, and you get pulled over by a cop, you have to imediatlly tell them that you have a gun in your car or you will go to jail???? my good friend i work with, told me this.... basically, if you get pulled over for speeding, or some other kind of violation, you immediatly need to striaight up say " officer, I have a gun"....????? just curious....

I don't know..but it woudl be smart to admit anyway.

Officer, I am a registered gun owner, and there is one in my glovebox. I would be specific abotu where it is in the car and specify that you are a legal owner.

i was just curious bc my friend told me all this tonight.... bascially if the cops choose to search the vehicle, and find a gun, you can go to jail for not speaking up and saying right off the bat, that you have a gun..... i do not own a gun, my best friend does... just pondering about it...

I know you have to have a special license to carry a concealed weapon and of course a permit to have the gun. I am not sure how much information you have to reveal if you get pulled for speeding though.

i have a gun AND a concealed firearm permit...IF i have my weapon in the car with me, i ALWAYS tell the officer...for his safety and mine. even if you have a weapon OF ANY KIND in the car, whether it be the trunk or right on your lap, you must tell the officer and for an added measure keep both of your hands on the steering wheel.

if i were an officer, i dont know you and am liable to draw my weapon if i know you have a gun and cant see your hands....and you never know where that may lead...

I've been a gun owner and armed guard for 10 years and I have heard that some states require that you inform the officer right away about a concealed weapon, other states only require it if you are specifically asked.

The best thing I think you could do is inform the officer that you have a concealed weapons permit (they may know it already from running your plate) Whatever you do nevert blurt out "I got a gun"...Just tell them about the permit, they will give you instructions and probably ask you to handover the weapon or they will ask where it is so they can secure it for officer safety, complete the traffic stop and give it back to you and send you on your way...

^^ youre right...in my experience with it and being pulled over, i was asked to step out of the car, even though it was only a minor traffic infraction.

Like the others have said, I'm not sure if it is a law or not. I can tell you from my personal experiance, that everytime I have been pulled over when carrying my gun I always inform the officer.

Really depends on the situation , I don't tell them unless I feel the need to . Example would be if my insurance card was under the firearm and was going to be seen by the police . If my vehicle was going to be searched I would inform them of the firearm .
Believe me once the officer knows you have a firearm the whole dynamics of the pullover changes .. rather quickly . But this is just my pov . Use your own judgment .

I think the law is differant state to state. We always tell them, because otherwise if they see a gun when you open the glovebox to get your cards they may flip out. Then hand them your concealed permit with your other cards.

Depends on where you are - here ( on the coast ) it's called castle domain law. Your car is an extension of your house, as long as you inform the officer you have one and it's regged it's okay and of course you have valid ID. ( derh )
    No permit required.

If you want to carry it on you - thats a different story.

I'd check the laws in your state.. I know this "castle domain" law applies to a lot of the southern states.

Well first off, in most states an officer cannot search your car without your consent. Officers typically do not make this well know. This is why on cops, idiots pulled over just for speeding often get busted for drugs too, because they allowed the officers to search their vehicle.

When dealing with an officer however, you should disclose any weapon you are carrying. If you are carrying a small knife, pepper spray, gun, whatever, either on your person or in your car, you should let them know immediately.

If you do not, and they come across those items, that can cause reasonable suspician in the officer, which will escalate the situation.

Another thing: when telling an officer you have a weapon fo any kind, do no tjust pull it out saying "i have a knife". That is how you get beat down, they are likely to think you are about to attack. Tell the officer, I have a gun/knife/whatever in my pocket/center console, is it okay if I take it out and hand it to you, or would you rather get it yourself?

I keep my paperwork clipped to the visor. I just have to get out my drivers license after that. Some States require that you inform Police that you have a firearm some do not. Here in Colorado for example I can have a firearm in my car "for personal protection while traveling" this does not require a permit for concealed carry. If you live in NY, CA, IL, MA, or WI you could well be in trouble for having the firearm with ammunition together. You have to check your State and Local Laws.

usually a good source for this info appears to be down right now.
