The only downside to the crystal litter is how dusty it is. One of my cats has allergies, and the dust gets to her, so I hate to use it...but it seems to work the best. I've tried tons of different brands.

My cat hated that stuff so much that she started pooping in the bath tub instead. lol

I've tried all kinds of litter but the generic stuff always works just fine.

The best litter I found was at Costco "Kitty Komfort" 50lbs box $6.99 can. It's the clumping kind and have been using it for over 3yrs now.
I know this sounds like to much work, but I found the best way to keep the box clean and avoid odours is to scoop the box 2 times a day.It only takes a minute and I rarely need to dump it out and wash it and start over as it never gets really gross so is probaly a time saver and it's much nicer for my cat.
Plus their feet are much cleaner when they are walking all over your bed

    Clean it twice a day?

Sounds awesome in theory....but I'm lucky if I clean it 2 times a week. I am honestly terrible with that.

I know it's bad when Peanut shits on the mat right outside of the box. It's like her telling me Mom- It's soo stinky in there I can't even bear going in. (covered box)
Then I feel guilty and try to keep it fresh and clean for a few days...but I never keep up with it.

    I'm a bad pet owner

At least they are well fed and well loved.....

I use Fresh Step for multiple cats. And these things are my new best friend. Sifting cat pan liners. I don't use this brand, I use the Walmart brand.

You put the whole package in the box and secure it at the top with a rubber band. When you clean out the box, you take off the band, pull off the top layer and the clean litter filters through the holes in that layer.

Then you add more litter to it. The sifting makes it smell better due to circulation. When you get to the last layer, it has no holes, so you throw it away and start with a new batch.

This way, you're not scooping and it gets all the weird pee clumps that you have trouble getting out. By taking out the whole layer, you are starting fresh.

Try them. Trust me, you'll love them.

^^ I'm gonna pick some of thoes up.

That will get rid of the nasty pee clumps stuck at the bottom of the box.

My big cat used to tear up her liners though, so I stopped using them. Do your cats tear up these sifting liners? The concept seems great, I really need to go clean some kitty poo today.

^^I tried liners before too. My cats always tore them to pieces so it was ineffective.

We use the crystal kind, but my the male when he uses it you could swear my husband a used it. It smells like an adult male has "blown out the bathroom" It has to be cleaned even before it dries.

These liners are sturdier than the regular ones. The regular liners are built like tall kitchen garbage bags. These are thicker and made of some weird strong, non stretchy plastic.

My cats are shredders too but they have a hard time getting through these. Try a box. If you get the Walmart brand you're only wasting 3 bucks. But if it works, priceless.

The best cat liter is from Petsmart. It comes in a 15 lbs refillable bucket and is way cheaper to refill that any quality liter out there. It is also veterinarian approved. Now for the cat liter getting everywhere, if you go to Target they have these kitty mats the catches the liter from their paws when they exit. I also bought the best liter box in the world from Target. It has a high back so if their pee shoots the back catches it.

I use Fresh Step for Multiple Cats too. I used to use Tidy Cat, but Fresh Step stops odors dead. Way better litter. I also have a litterbox built to fit in a corner, which has a cover. It was a large box built for two cats, because I had one obese cat who couldn't fit in a normal sized box, and one diabetic cat that peed and pooped enough for three cats. The diabetic one has since departed (RIP) and the obese one is now merely slightly chubby now that I was able to put him on a diet, so it's probably more box than I need now, but Casey seems to like the elbow room.

Anyway, I put a regular garbage bag around the box, and a cat liner on top of it, so in case the cat scratches through the liner (he usually doesn't, but just in case), the garbage bag is still there as a second layer. Scoop the litter every day or two into a small garbage bag, and when I change the litter, I just unwrap the garbage bag layer and it all bags up very neatly. Then I wipe the box down with Lysol wipes, let it air dry and put another garbage bag and cat pan liner on it.

I also SWEAR by Oust odor neutralizer. God, I love that stuff, I think everyone should use it. My late diabetic cat could stink up the entire apartment with his radioactive poop after one of his visits to the box, and a quick spray of Oust would nip that in the bud.

Those sifting cat liners are intriguing, but I feel like I already go through a lot of paper and plastic products (for one person who rarely shops except at the grocery store, I seem to generate a lot of trash). I guess I'll stick with my plastic scoop. As for tracking, there is carpet immediately outside the box in my apartment, so I have a good solid Dustbuster with a rotating brush attachment. You could try just getting a carpet remnant and putting the box on that. I tried a tracking mat once, but my cats would just jump over it, tracking the litter even farther away.

^^^^Wow, you sound a lot like me, lol! We have a HUGE box because my Backgammon was obese as well. When he passed away, I wasn't going to buy a new a new one for my two remaining ones.

I also have the Dustbuster plugged in and ready to go at all times. I have a cat who pees against the back wall, putting pee on the liner and a long line of clump along the back, so the sifting liners work well for us as I'd have to wash the liner everyday.

I'm going to try the Oust. Don't know why I didn't think of it earlier, but thanks for the heads up!
