    Default Hiring a maid

    Anyone else have a maid?

My boyfriend and I are discussing hiring one, and we aren't sure what to pay. We do not want ot go through an agency.

Basicially, I'd like someone to come in for 2 hours, 2 or 3 times a week. Wash dishes and put them away, I can wash and dry the laundry, but I need someone to hang and fold. Wipe down counters and clean the bathroom.
Pick up any living room clutter and vacuum the floors.

    I have a small 2 bedroom apartment..I think it's about 1100 sq. feet.

So for say 2 hours, 3 days a week....what is a good price to pay for the work I want done?

    $10 or so an hour seems average...but that's only $60 a week. Is $75 a week good?

I looked up maids in Las Vegas on Indeed.com and found that most make between 17,000 a year and 19,000 a year. That means that most make between 8.85 and hour and 9.90 and hour. I think 75 per week for the hours you want is good to start with but if I were satisfied with him or her I would give a raise after several months to say, 100 dollars a week.

As an aside, looking at those figures made me even more grateful to be a stripper.

I don't think you get to pick what you want to pay the maid. The maid tells you what she charges for what you want. If she has other clients in your building/area that she does at the same time she'll probably charge less than someone that has to make a trip over there for two hours.

This would be like if a guy came into a strip club and said, "well, I think $100/hr is good for a stripper, and a dance is just, like, a couple minutes, so I'll give you $8. Maybe if you're good I'll make it $10 next time."

I had one, but we paid her $30 an hour. But minimum wage here is around $20. In another country *cough*... I had one and paid $20 an hour, but she was REALLY thorough and cleaned my catbox. P:

I think 75 per week sounds sufficient.
I want one just for my floors, do they do that? My house is mostly stone and tile floors and they kill me to mop after I dance all week. Especially the kitchen. Does anyone know if there are just mop maids?

How is it like that? I said I noticed that most get paid $10 an hour and I felt that was to little, and I wanted to pay more, and was wondering if the higher amount I was willing to pay would be acceptable. I'm certainly not out to try to pay less than the job is worth. I was offering more! I'm trying to be very fair.

I was going to advirtise in the newspaper - Wanted maid. 2 hours per day, 3 days a week. Pay is $10 an hour or whatever.
Poeple that respond think the price is fair. Poeple who don't wont respond.
So in that sence...I do get to pick what I pay, because I'm not going to pay more than what I think the job is worth...yet I'm not going to screw anyoen over or cause them to cheapen their prices. I only want what is fair for all involved.

I'm sorry, I guess that was a really bad example. I guess I meant to say that I think maids are kind of like strippers - they set their own prices. If you find a maid that someone recommends, she'll probably tell you what she charges for what you want. I wasn't thinking about the possibility of advertising in the newspaper and being more like an employer.

    Ah...makes sense now.

If someeone recommended someone and she asked a higher price than I was thinkign of paying..but came with high recomendations, I woudl hire her.

So far the only recommendations we've gotten were for people who come in once every 2 weeks and deep clean....and that's not what I want. I need more of just simple maintance stuff.

You'd let your dishes pile up in your sink for 2 or 3 days until the maid arrives to do something about them???

Umm...yeah. 2 or 3 days worth of dishes aren't much at all. Maybe 2 cereal bowls and a few cups...

Fuck..I do my dishes like once a month.

2 people who eat out or order food in and aren't home much.....not a lot of dishes....

Becides the fact that if that's what I'm payin them to do..what's it matter?

What's it matter if every dish in the house was dirty, if that's what I pay for them to do?

Luckily...my pride wouldn't allow that.....I'm the person who would clean the house before the maid came to clean the house because I'd be embarassed if they saw it as slobby as I allow it to get....

Which is why I want a maid. I let my house get to messy. If someoen came and kept up with it a few times a week..it would never get dirty...We aren't hoem very much...I don't cook very often....

She probably meant whatever dishes were there, not that she wouldn't do them herself in between.

And even if she didn't mean that, some people don't have the time or just don't like housework. I mean, she is looking to hire a cleaning person..

We had a maid for awhile, bf hired her and paid her 40 bucks a time to clean. I think she showed up maybe once a week or every two weeks. 40 bucks was fine when she deep cleaned everything (floors, bathroom, etc) but near the end she got lazy and would just vacuum and stack everything in a pile. Then I fired her

Yeah, we have a maid. Just a heads up though, most won't touch laundry for less than $10-15 a load (min of 3-4 loads) I don't know about just folding it. Dishes are also usually extra. Our biggest problem is finding someone who shows up consistently and cleans well. I wouldn't try the bottom of the barrel price wise or you are going to run into lots of problems.

I found one on craigslist. I pay her $20 an hour. She comes in for 3-4 hours at a time once a week.

I really like her. She doesn't help me so much with the down and gritty dirty cleaning, but she really helps me sooooo much weekly as far as maintenance and with continuing to organize my apartment (I have so much to still unpack from moving into this apartment...)

We pay $20 an hour and she'll do everything, laundry and dishes, although I don't have her because I feel weird having someone do my dirty laundry and dishes, lol. Usually she's here for about 3 hours and gets the whole house (you've seen our house so you can compare the size of your apt.)

I think a lot of people pay about $15 but it depends on what they do and how you feel about it.

well..if it takes 3 hours to do your whole house....I won't even need 2 hours for my apartment. Espicially if she comes 3 times a week. 1 hour should be sufficient. So even if I do it that way....1 hour, 3 days a week, $20 an hour...still only $60 a week.

So yeah...I think $75 sounds good.

    Sweet. I'm hiring a maid!

I wasnt criticizing - it was more of an observation on what she said and wondering why (taking it as it was said) someone would even consider letting dishes pile up waiting for someone to come in and clean them up after the fact.

I was taking it literally and getting grosed out over it because I cant stand to have dishes in the sink overnight

She wants to hire a maid. They are not discussing her dishes or what grosses you out

Just a heads up... the maid will probably not clear up your clutter. They don't know where you want that stuff, and they generally just do sanitizing, scrubbing, mopping and other "chores" like that.

For those who have/had maids , do you leave them alone in your house. Ive always wanted one but dont want to have my stuff come up missing later.

Wouldn't it defeat the purpose of hiring a maid to clean for me...if I cleaned myself??

I don't have the time or the will to clean my house everyday.

Gosh...I don't know how much you eat, or how many people that live in your house....but 3 days of dishes is really a small thing when your only 2 people who are never home to eat.

    But wait a minute....

Why the fuck am I ever defending myself??

I don't have to explain why I want someone to clean my house.

I hired a maid several years ago and she was ok except that she mopped the floors with something strange (I think it was Comet? lol) and it left chalky white streaks all over the kitchen floor. I always had to mop after her when she left, I don't know why I didn't have the heart to tell her she was doing a sucky job in the kitchen. Oh and I paid her 25 freaking dollars an hour!

I think I'd want one if I lived with someone else (especially if they happened to be a slob) and/or if I had a larger place. For my current 1BR, I clean it often enough that even an all-over cleaning (dust, Lysol counters, scrub bathroom, vacuum, swiffer, mop floors, change cat litter) takes about an hour unless I'm being a slacker about it. Laundry facilities are communal pay-per-load. Plus, I work from home so I can generally take care of most of my housework while I'm working. (Lucky!) I also only use a few dishes a day, but I rinse them completely after use, so my dirty dishes aren't foody and nasty.

But inevitably I'll have another job where I'll be in the office each day, and ideally will eventually have a larger place, and I'd love to have someone come in a couple times a week and do the above (minus the cat litter, I can handle that). Why not? They make some money, I have a clean house I didn't have to clean myself, which means spending my free time doing fun things instead of chores. That sounds like a win-win situation to me!

If you have a housekeeper, do you supply the cleaning supplies or do they bring their own? What about vaccums and such?
