^ I supplied my own that's why I just couldn't understand why she mopped the floors with Comet...which was right next to the Mr. Clean.

    ^^ That's strange....

She must not have known what she was doing...comet will damage floors.....That stuff I use only on the sinks and bathtubs....maybe on the stove if it has crusty food stuck to it.

I think cleaning services will suppoy their stuff, but if you hire someone independantly, it;s hit or miss if they will have their own supplies....I would prefer for the maid to use my stuff....cause I like what I buy.

I had a maid in the past who was great doing deep cleaning. She would literally move the fridge to clean behind it, scrub the tops of ceiling fans, etc's.

One tip I would give is to tell her clearly what is fragile, and what you want left alone. We neglected to do that, and we ended up with a lot of broken stuff. For instance, she tried to move my big screen LCD TV to vaccuum behind it, didn't realize how heavy it was, and smashed the glass shelf system it was on.

The same day, I found that, while moving things to dust, she had shattered my 4 of my collection Egyptian glass perfume bottles (That I ahd purchased while In Cairo).

It was a shame, because she was a great cleaner and a hard worker, but she was clumsy and broke things (there were other "casualties", but on a smaller scale)

I used to be a maid. I'd charge by the house, and for a three bedroom, two floor clean (I wouldn't usually clean the basement useless asked) it was generally $60. So that's about 20/ hour I think.

It's damn hard work, and I wouldn't do it for less. But that's me. I do know that the going rate around here is similar to that though....probably varies by area. My mom pays $75 for her maid to clean the house (probably a two and a half hour job).

Maids put up with lots of crap...literally and psychologically. Some people are excrutiatingly particular about how they like their houses done, so keep in mind why they charge so much.

ETA- for the jobs you listed, a maid could probably get it done in an hour, not two. Most are amazingly efficient. This is why most are paid for the job, not for the time. If you say $20 to get X done, instead of $10 an hour, that might be better. Cleaning pros are zippy!

i agree with Molly. If you are paying an hourly rate, you might get someone who just "sits on the clock" and works lazily. But, if you pay $75 a week to come 3 times and sweep, mop, do dishes, and pile your stuff, they might do a faster and better job!

I haven't left mine alone just because I'm always here but I trust her, I would if I had to be away. I think it just depends on how you feel about the maid. Personaly I wouldn't want a maid that I couldn't trust alone in my house whether I left her alone or not.

I supply my own and she's an independent maid, not from a company.

Also, most clients left me alone in their house. They check references though. I mean, you have to trust the maid, obviously, but why would we steal when you'd know who to blame? I'm not a thief, but the idea never seemed to make sense to me. I did kinda laugh when they'd conspicuously leave out wads of cash or the like. Riigghhtt...

Or else friends would ask "do you go through their stuff? Aren't you curious?". WTF? No way, and I never had the time to do anything but clean, clean, clean.

I'd love to have a maid. Being in a hotel made me realise how much I need one back home.

    But wait a minute....

Why the fuck am I ever defending myself??

I don't have to explain why I want someone to clean my house.
4 people, 3 of which seem to think that the dishes wash themselves.

No one asked you to defend yourself or explain why you want to hire a maid.

    The original question was:
"You'd let your dishes pile up in your sink for 2 or 3 days until the maid arrives to do something about them???"

Personally, I find leaving unwashed dishes in the sink rather disgusting - unless its something really baked on and cruddy from hours in the oven that requires a long soak to get it all off. Now if the fact that I have testes causes a problem for you about what I said above, then Im sure that there are several others here without them that would feel the same way about piling dishes.

If I can get up and go to work for my 9 hours and come home to cook dinner for my family and find time to clean up after myself, I dont see why anyone cant take 30 seconds to clean off a cereal or ice-cream bowl and spoon after they finish with it....or even at least fill it with water so it isnt a dried out crud bomb when I get home to clean it, as opposed to me hiring somebody to do it just because you feel you cant be bothered.

Its one thing to have no time to clean up after a entire house full of people leaving a mess, as opposed just cleaning up after yourself,

I wasnt trying to make this an issue, but If Im going to get jumped on, then Im giving back as good as I get, so lets keep it civil - it was an honest question

Dooood, seriously, nobody cares what you do with your dishes, just as nobody cares what K does with hers. That's not what this was about, LOL.

Huh? How would I even know that you had testicles? You have no gender ribbon. I didn't kno w if i was speaking with a male or female, and didn't assume either from your post...and honestly, I don't understand why gender would be brought up as an issue either way.

Everything else - Get over it!!

Not your business, not your concern. I asked for advice on hiring a maid, not advice on how I should keep my house. If you do not have any advice on how to hire a maid, then you have nothing of value to add to this thread, so please see your way out, k? thanks. buh bye.

    so...anyways...

you should definately have the maid use your own vacuum, you just never know what's been sucked up in someone else's house.

    very true.

I would prefer they use my stuff anyway. I have a good vacuum.

Bf has been asking people he works with about who they use...getting numbers and stuff. Would prefer we hired one who came from someone we know with good references.

A friend of his offered to clean our house, fr cheap...but I don't want to hire friends. That can only cause trouble.

*agreed, I think hiring a friend is the quickest way to end that friendship.
