    Default Indian-inspired songs?

I need help. I'm sick of dancing to the same old music at work and the DJ just doesn't get it. If he plays Nickelback or that stupid "want to be a rockstar" song for me one more time i am walking off in the middle of my set and not tipping him at all. I've told him I like Massive attack, Bush, Garbage, etc and some older REAL rock music (AC/DC, NIN, Metallica, Manson).. but I'm getting sick of it when he does play it. I really like massive attack and more ambient/slow/sexy songs...since my name is Gypsy and I dress for the part with hipscarves and bangle bracelets, I want to find some gypsy/indian-ish-inspired songs to play for my sets. Think... the slow part in the middle of "smack my bitch up" minus the rest of the song I really like Massive attack, but I can't find any other music that is like this. Help??? Djoser? anyone??

    Try Narayan, by Prodigy.

I just saw this thread now and it is intriguing, but I have to go right now--I will come back later though, sounds like you are stuck with a moron for a DJ, lol (what, impossible!).

I can think of two artists that might fit:

Iio ("Rapture" and "Kiss You" are the two singles I've heard)
Joi (I have their albums "One and One Is One" and "We Are Three")

Both are house/electronica wth Eastern vibes.

Also, while not strictly Indian, the video for "Romeo" by Basement Jaxx was done Bollywood-style: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LU4Y3A3oJRM
"Women, not girls, rule my world" - Prince

"No parking on the dance floor" - Midnight Star

My friend Neha picked this little jewel up in India awhile back:

Don't Be Shy - Rouge ft. DJ Zeus
    It's a pop song that's pretty catchy.

Check out Elie Attieh, gosh Indian vibe is hard... I got some music from Dubai but it totally sucked. It's hard to find good roots-like vibe. I know people say Punjabi but he's so main-stream.. he's got that voice that wouldn't sound so seductive in the SC.. IMO

Eric Serra – Alech Taadi ...

I'm gonna keep an eye on this thread because I love middle eastern music. It's hard to find, though. I posted two good artists, the first one in particular should be a very good buy, you can get it on Amazon. She's from Lebanon.

Also, I was talking to an Indian friend once. There's a song called saki-saki (not sure on spelling) or something, it's huge in the east. If you can plug that in, you might be able to do some more digging and find some more music. Morcheeba is dub, Rusted Root is good but not Indian, certainly is 'gypsy' like though. I'll keep an ear out.

-Susan- "Tum Bin Jiya" was a killer tune, and I really liked the mixes on the single. Sadly, that's all I have ever heard from him. I found one full-length used once, but it was scratched all to hell so I didn't buy it.
    Back to the OP:
I love Massive Attack, at home. I would probably be fired for playing most of their songs. I do work in a "Big Box" club, though. Here, it's not sexy...it's boring. What works in a smaller place just really does NOT translate. Most "actual" Indian songs I have heard tend to be in the realm of stupid pop. It reminds me a bit of Japanese pop, actually.

Wow. This post wasn't helpful in any way. Okay then. I'm going to bed.

Oh, and it's interesting to hear you mention probably getting fired for playing Massive Attack. I would be as well, except for a couple of their lively remixes maybe, maybe on a thursday instead of a friday, whatever.

But in my very first club, which was about as big as my present one, I used to pull it off--playing a sexy song right when it was slamming, and then kicking right back in with the high-energy shit. I used to write about it here sometimes. But it would only work with certain songs, and it really, really had to be the right dancer. And you had to be sure the crowd was ready for it--like they were all really into the stage show already. And you had to tell them what you were doing, and why--the girl onstage, that's why. Watch her move, and see for yourself why I am breaking the fucking rules.

So I have been wondering how it would work in my present club--presuming of course I wasn't fired for it. There's a lot more tourists, a lot more drunkenness, a lot more of a 'lapdance factory' atmosphere going on, which would make it harder to pull off, for sure.

Makes me want to try it, lol...

I had this comp that he put together and it had lots of cool Indian artists on it. I believe it got stolen from my stripper bag ages ago but look! $4 on amazon, it's so bought. Singh hasn't put anything out in ages it looks like. Those State of Bengal tracks are pretty good.

Yeah, whatever happened to the Indian dance revolution of 1996? Maybe there are some British Pakistani DJs we could dig up?

I exaggerate a bit with the straight-up firing, but I'd probably get the "WTF is this?" phonecall. My boss is pretty easygoing. I can play more off the wall things then most guys I know around here. My point really was the slowness. I do agree with you that ceetain girls, at certain times, can pull it off. But, of course, that then opens the bitchy can of worms. "Why won't you play "xx" for me, then?" Etc. It's hard to respond with "Well, that song sucks. Also, you can't dance your way out of a paper bag." and still stay in everyone's good graces, you know? So yes, blaming management is much easier.

Dinner's ready. Maybe I'll start a thread later, or add it to the "rants from the booth" one.

Yeah, you should, that would be cool--and no doubt highly amusing as well.

I know what you mean about then having to fend off other requests for slow stuff! 'I can't play "In Love With a Stripper" because everyone will vomit at the thought of falling in love with you.' is not an option.

Has anyone suggested VAST yet? Not quite middle eastern, but the samples of the Bulgarian Childrens choir are a NICE touch!

Other possible ideas... ANY enigma... whee! Tricky(look up Ponderosa, or Christiansands) Hector Zazou has a lot of fun stuff(he's an ethnomusicologist) and I can think of a few songs that would go over well in teh club(matched with a somewhat MORE mainstream song-don't wnat to weir people out...). Try Annukka Suaren Nieto or Adventuresin teh Scandinavian skin trade. Also, Miranda sex garden has some interesting influences-you might enjoy peepshow, ardera sempre, Caravan or Without Trace(though those are quieter). ALso, Medieval babes do the occassioanl fast song/remix. THey did some HOT stuff with Delirium... and you might look up their song "isabella" All are unusual and might be suited better to slower nights/crowds, but worth poking through.

Another idea is to try looking up film soundtracks. This might sound stupid. But seriously! The end credits from Constantine are surprisingly fun to dance to, and if i recall, there was a track from Flight of the Phoenix, and the Hulk had great eastern vocals. Might take skimming through the scores to find the track, but it COULD be worth it for unusual pieces....

Also, look up Cirque du Soleil. There's a remix CD of their music out, and some of their music would be HOT to dance to. Afrika(cottonbelly mix) comes to mind.. You just have to skim through a fair amount of instrumentals to find the ones that are upbeat enough for the club. But its REAAAAALY good stuff, and worth a listen anyways!

    Hope that helps...

That's quite an impressive list there, Needtodance, thanks!

You mentioning Delerium made me remember my favorite song by them, which I'm willing to bet Gypsy74 will like, it's called 'Terra Firma', from the 'Poem' CD, but is apparently available on the 'Best of' CD as well, and of course online.

It does have a very exotic or possibly Indian sound to it.

Gypsy you might want to check out some of Prodigy's other CDs as well. Not all of it is good for use at work but if you like the songs you mentioned you would probably like the other stuff they have put out.

What can I say? I'm a TERRIBLE music geek. The hard part is narrowing it down to what can or can not be used in the club. And in not letting my OCD habits with lists get in the way. I"m trying to talk myself out of editing the post to list teh ideas on a spectrum of "rock oriented" "techno oriented" "hip hop oriented" and "quieter/slower". THIS is why I can't get stuff done!

Terra firma is AWESOME! I'm off to go find that CD.

Littlelo, I was also going to suggest "Lebanese Blonde." It's perfect.

Also try "Pit Stop" by Lovage.
