Default Quick, help - Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia!

Ok, I have just hours to decide whether I go to Kuala Lumpar next week or no. (Provided that I can get a flight.) I know NOTHING about the place. I shall have company for 3 days if I go, but Im thinking it would be such a waste to just go for 3 days and come back.
So, has anyone else been and if so, Id love to hear your oppinion on the place.
    How safe is it there?
How expensive is it as far as food, accom, local travel etc go?
Am I crazy for going on my own?
Will I survive by myself being an English speaker that is totally shit with other languages?
Im violently allergic to peanuts in food, is it crazy of me to go there?

And obviously if ive forgotten or overlooked something please fill mein. Im a little too shocked to think straight right now, id appreciate any imput!

EDIT: Okay so I forgot that you may not be a U.S. citizen, but much of the information is still good. Australia should have something similar for its citizens if the above link doesn't help.

I've visited Malaysia, but never made it to Kuala Lumpar. Malaysia was ssooo amazing, though. One gigantic jungle (where I went)! Hope you have a blast!

Virtually all my extended family hails from Malaysia and I've been there my fair share (though the last time I went was back in 2003).

The vast majority of Chinese locals there speak English so you should be able to get by fine. You might have some difficulty with the local Malays with regards to communication but if you're staying in the heart of KL, you should be fine. Food is damn cheap if you eat where the locals eat. Keep in mind they don't have the same health standards as most of the developed western world but I've always been the adventurous type and have escaped relatively unscathed.

I can't comment too much of accommodation as I usually stay with family while I'm there. But I have stayed at the Federal Hotel before. From what I remember, rates were comparable to what I'd normally see in Canada.

Your hair will not be a problem at all. Yes, it's predominately a Muslim country but you'll find KL is very much like a tropical version of Hong Kong. What I will say is the country has a zero tolerance policy when it comes to drugs. Being caught in possession of any drug including marijuana is punishable by death so don't take any chances.

There will be plenty of taxis around. You might want to look into day tours or possibly spending a night or two at one of the beach resorts.

I have never felt unsafe there but I must qualify that by saying I'm a guy. I can't possibly know what if takes for a woman to feel safe while travelling alone. KL is very tourist friendly though.

You may have to be careful when it comes to food allergies though as Malaysian cooking makes use of peanuts a lot. In these cases, I would make sure to only order food from places where the workers are fluent in English. No point in risking a perfectly good trip.

Shopping can be quite cheap. You will have the ability to haggle with most vendors. Where you wont have this luxury is at the brand name stores (e.g., Nike, Adidas, etc.).

    Hope this helps.

I flew through and have a friend who lives in KL (he is British and married to a Malaysian Chinese lady). The airport in Sepang is the most beautiful building I've ever seen. The people in KL are quite friendly. It is a Muslim country, but they don't have sharia in KL (though in some other parts of Malaysia they do) and they don't expect non-Muslims to adhere to Islamic custom. KL is very multicultural, so you should be fine.

Be careful when bathing. My ex-husband and I both got thrush infections from the bathwater, and a few of my classmates in grad school who visited Malaysia did too. But I have other friends who insist this has never happened to them. And meh, you can treat thrush pretty easily if it does happen.

You should definitely go! I'd love to go back to Malaysia and see more of it.

A chance to pick up any guide books so you can write down or say that you are allergic to peanuts. FYI, when I went to Thailand peanuts and nuts are two different things. Luckily, a local was nice enough to write down in thai 'no peanuts, no fish, no nuts' for me. I just pointed to the paper if the person spoke very little English when I ordered food. It was really helpful. Guide books in general are helpful. I rec. lonely planet or let's go travel books.

No you're not crazy for going on your own my first international trip was to Thailand earlier this year. Just educate yourself about the country as much as you can. Be safe and have fun!

Then come back to California. For more than the airport, this time.
"He will come in one of the pre-chosen forms. During the rectification of the Vuldrini, the traveler came as a large and moving Torg! Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor! Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!"

That's too bad. At the very least, it'll give you ample time to research the sights you want to see and the things you want to do when another chance to go comes up. Luckily for you, Malaysia is not too far from Australia.

thats a shame APS, KL is a fantastic city, I loved it. The people are so friendly and most people that u will have to deal with such as hotel staff, shop assistants, cab drivers and people working at the night market can speak english.
