I just found out the hard way that my bank is now taking withdrawals out of my account before it adds in the deposits. Is this becoming normal or are most banks still doing deposits first and then withdrawals ?

yeah...my bank fucked me over with this...we fought and fought..eventually closing the account.
I was tempted to close my account, but I'm afraid they will all start to do this.
We went to B of A
Haven't had any problems with them at all.
Yeah, this is the new bank scam. My last bank would sometimes hold my deposits for several days so they could get a few withdrawals in and some bounce fees. I moved to Washington Mutual and haven't had any problems; my deposits clear immediately now.
^^ Interestng....WaMu was the bank we had the issues with, and fought with them for months over it.
We were bouncing every pay!!
Every single fuckign pay we had fees and charges...and his paycheck was direct deposit!!!
So on payday, he would pay the bills online...which would clear immediatly, and he assumed that since his pay was direct deposit, it was available.
Here's the fucked up part.
It would show his paycheck as deposited.....but in reality it was "pending" but this didn't show on our account online. It just loked cleared and available, and we assumed safe to pay bills.
That's why we fought. But we lost, an changed banks

ahhh, the 'miracle' of electronic money. It goes out instantly, but it comes in just as slow as paper or seems to anyhow ! Banks now try to take full advantage of debits vs credits timing in order to extract fees from customers who are trying to play things very 'close to the vest'.
Yes, banks now typically run the debits before running the credits. Yes banks' online account status software often does involve nasty time lags. Yes this typically means having to maintain a $500 or $1000 cash balance as a 'cushion' against overdrafting being caused by all of the weekly debits hitting before the weekly credits credits.

To avoid this I go in person to deposit cash. It's there within 2 fricken seconds that way. But I've had it happen before. I HATE HATE HATE that 'pending' crap. It happens with cheques and internet deposits. You have $2500, Oh, but we forgot to tell you, you can only spend $1200 of that.

is it wells fargo? fuck wells fargo. fuck banks. I go with credit unions.
I had that problem with WaMu too. I'm with Bank Atlantic now and havent had a problem(but they are local only)
We need a stripper credit union! It would take cash deposit history as proof of income for mortgage loans, and it would be open from 3 pm to 5 am. Oh hells yeah!
you want to give mortgages to strippers?!
Well, not personally, no!![]()

^^^ I can imagine that there are probably a whole bunch of sleazy financiers out there who would be willing to bankroll a 'stripper' credit union ... which would probably consist of 99% loans and mortgages and 1% savings and investments (remember that in general SW dancers are the exception to the rule). The kicker of course would be exactly what 'future services' the borrowers would be required to post as collateral !!! This could wind up being an institutionalized 'Sugar Daddy' !

You guys SUCK! This JUST happened to me today. That's what I get for opening my mouth. But nooooo, I deposited my money IN PERSON and it took out my gym membership but DIDN'T TELL ME (You still have $50 it said to me!) and I go to lunch and BAM... I'm overdrawn and charged a $30 fee. FUCK.

ironically, once i simply maintained plenty of money (mel's 500+ standard or more) in the account(s) at all times, i've never had issues with deposits being held for days on end. but it was an issue when i kept accounts with only bill money in them and not much more.
what's really irritating is online pay systems that somehow take 3-5 days to process. it's so silly-- computers shouldn't credit you slower than a mailed check! but at least it's 'free'.

The reason online bill pay takes so long sometimes is because some creditors will only accept a check and not an electronic transfer. So the bank literally prints out a check and sends it, hence the 3 to 5 days.
Yes having an amount in your checking or savings will help prevent holds.
Any deposit made to an ATM machine will automatically go on a hold no matter the account relationship. Banks have had alot of fraud ie saying there is 100 in cash in the envelope when in reality there is only 10.
Always ask if there is a hold on a deposit and why. Some banks, for some reason, don't say anything and expect you to read the receipt. Even then sometimes it isn't printed out very well.
