    Default My Pom has pyometra!!!!!!

She went into surgery tonight to have her uterus removed. Poor little thing has been in so much pain the past 2 days ..vomiting...wouldn't walk. I knew she wasn't spayed when I got her but I honestly wasn't aware there were benefits to her overall health by spaying her. I thought it was just to prevent unwanted pregnancies and since she was indoors all the time and always supervised when outside that she didn't need to be fixed.

The vet said the surgery went well but that pom-pom is not out of the woods yet; The vet is "cautiously optimistic."

So, if you've been on the fence about having your pet fixed, just know it can really help them out in the long run!

Yes!! Spaying/neutering helps with so many other things becides preventing pregnancy.

    Health issues, behavioral issues...

My cats have never been outside, and never will be...yet they are spayed.

I feel like it's all my fault. It is all my fault, this could have totally been prevented. *sigh*

The same thing happened to my Samoyed when I was younger; like you, she was always supervised, in a strongly fenced yard, etc, so we didn't see the point. She was healthy and perfect for 13 years, then one day, out of no where (seriously, the day before she was sprinting around the yard chasing rabbits) she collapsed, and couldn't move. She was diagnosed with pyometra, and as you said, this could have been prevented if she had been spayed.

Her prognosis wasn't as good; they told us that if she came through surgery, she'd need 6 months of recovery (limited motion), but that she'd never be like she was. She would most likely walk with some pain, have trouble sitting/laying, etc. Because she had always been so independent as a dog (she was affectionate and sweet, but also a loner), and loved running/hunting, and because Samoyeds don't typically live beyond 12 or 13, we opted to end her life, rather than have her spend the next months before she died of old age in pain.

Point being, spaying is extremely important.

I hope your Pom is okay

It was very sad, but in a way, we were lucky. She was an old dog when she got sick. Samoyeds almost never live past 13 anyway. And she never showed her age at all, she was just beginning to show the first signs of arthritis when this happened. So she lived every day, up until that very last, running and chasing and being happy and active.

And don't feel guilty, it isn't your fault; you didn't know.

And it's a relatively new issue. Spaying your dog WAS just for preventing unwanted pups up until recently. That's because so many breeds are now overbred and inbred, causing the development of new health problems. Infections of the uterus is one of them.

I accidentally misspelled it it's actually PYOMETRA but you'll still get tons of hits with the misspelled word.

here's a good description with graphic photos (iow, warning)

YES...PLEASE PLEASE spay and neuter. Pyo is NOT pretty or good and a LOT of dogs die from it. And for males...prostate and testicular cancer is just as bad.
Theres no excuse for not having your pet fixed(not that I'm blaming the OP...you didnt know...someone SHOULD have told you ..wher eyou got her, the vet over the years..SOMEONE...you cant be expected to just KNOW) once you know the dangers.

I've done a LOT of pyo surguries over the years and it is one of the UGLIEST things you'll ever see.And extremely painful for the animal.

SO glad that your baby is coming through it ok...and that you are now educated on the matter and(I hope) will always spay and neuter early in the future.

And Chrissy...health problems go up exponentially with every heat. Please spay her before her next heat or her chances of complications will increase.

I have a question for you..The breeder that I got my Phantom poodles from gave them a vasectomy. Their testicles are intact..Should I still have them spayed (have the testicles removed ?) ??

    Why would she do this??
All this does is prevent him from mating. It does not offer the health OR behavior benefits of neutering..it is basically useless for health. It will prevent unwanted litters...but thats all.

Why not just do a vasectomy? Well, because neutering has a real health purpose as well as a behavior purpose.

    1. Neutering prevents reproductive system cancer, a vasectomy doesn't.

    2. Neutering prevents your dog from going nuts everytime he gets a whiff of a bitch in season, that can include small children with dirty underwear, your preachers leg when he pays you a visit, or girlfriend or wife when she is on her period. A vasectomy doesn't.

    3. It prevents him from marking (peeing) inside your home when any of the aforementioned circumstances occur.

    4. It prevents aggressive behavior associated with testosterone production. If neutered, he will keep much of his puppy-like personality too.

    5. Neutered dogs enjoy a longer lifespan.

Yes, pyo is NOT pretty AT ALL. See, I never thought my dog could ever get sick so suddenly like that. She has regular checkups, regular teeth cleanings, always is up to date on shots etc. I had never heard of pyometra and really thought spaying the animal was just to prevent pregnancy. How many of us remember hearing Bob Barker saying, "This is Bob Barker reminding you to help control the pet population, have your pet spayed or neutered." I really thought it was just population control. IT'S NOT. If you are not a professional breeder you should seriously consider having your animal fixed. Now I'm not aware of what sort of problems an unneutered male dog can have but if you choose (for whatever reason) to NOT spay your female at least be aware of the symptoms so that your pet's chances of survival are increased (untreated pyometra is nearly ALWAYS FATAL): [I have bolded the symptoms]

SWOLLEN BELLY I had been teasing her the past month or two calling her "Tubby" and "Lil Fat Girl" because her belly felt rotund. I thought this was from extra human food.

DIFFICULTY WALKING First I attributed this to getting older, I thought perhaps she was getting arthritic or maybe something happened to her at the groomers, what if they dropped her or something? I thought to myself since she went to the groomer's the day before she started having difficulty walking.

She went to the groomer's on Monday, had probs walking on Tuesday, but had a vet appointment of Thursday for shots so decided to have the vet check her out. EVERYTHING WAS NORMAL blood tests were normal (another sign of pyometra is INCREASED WHITE BLOOD CELL COUNT and FEVER she had neither of those) So she is sent home with a clean bill of health.

Sunday she VOMITS up her dinner (what little she ate, she didn't finish her dinner which was a first for her) and Monday morning she doesn't even touch her breakfast and vomits again. She goes BACK to the vet and well I won't bore you guys with all the details but just know there have been MANY visits, LOTS of tests, overnight stays, surgery, emergency care without which she likely would not had survived and would have met a slowly painful end.

Another symptom is DISCHARGE FROM THE VULVA which she did not have since that is only seen in open pyometra and she had closed pyometra (the cervix remained closed) therefore if her uterus had burst then all of the bacterial toxins would have remained in her system killing her.

We are optimistic she will be ok. She is doped up on morphine and will likely stay another night but we are very hopeful she'll pull through. I don't mean to be on a soapbox or anything...I just had no idea of this disease and it appears some of you are not aware either. That's why I'm sharing so much info. Google PYOMETRA if you'd like to learn more about it...there are so many stories and honestly I am shocked I never heard anything about it in the past.

btw, for some strange reason her chart (she's been going to the same practice for years) changed at some point from NOT SPAYED to SPAYED which resulted in somewhat of a delay in diagnosing her. The vet couldn't understand why her ultrasound images showed she had an enlarged uterus when her chart read spayed.

Surgery is the most successful treatment however apparently there is an alternative method to treat it but this is reserved exclusively for breeding females and they MUST become pregnant during the next cycle otherwise they will just get it again.

Well, there are a few reasons, I'll itemize them like you did yours..

    1. Phantoms ( and Partis ) are the original Poodles. Over the years breeders have tried to breed that gene out. Even the AKC didn't recognize them.
So if 2 black dogs were bred and they had 1 black puppy, 1 white puppy and one Phantom only the 1st 2 could be papered. However the AKC has since changed that, which means Phantoms not only can be registered, they can also participate in shows.

    2. If a dog has been spayed/neutered they can't be shown. So a vasectomy
makes it possible to "fix" the animal with any consequence in that regard.

    3. This particular breeder is not a big fan of Phantoms, the only way she would sell them to me is if I allowed her to fix them 1st.

I bought my 1st toy poodle Prince from her. She's been a breeder for 20-30 years, shows her own dogs and also runs a whippet rescue. Dogs are her life ! So I trusted her fully.

Well..if you arent going to show them, I'd recommend having them fully neutered for their health.
If you are planning to show them..neuter them as soon as they are done with their show career.
The sooner it is done, the more health benefits they will enjoy. The longer testosterone flows through them, the more their odds of getting cancer, or other prostate problems increase.

Ok, thank you so much for your advice. I haven't found a vet I can fully trust yet. Most just try to see how much they can get out of you. I'll be happy when I finally run across someone I trust 100%, or at least 90%.

In one of your posts you mentioned doing several operations on dogs, are a vet ?

Wow I hope your baby girl is okay. I didn't know this, and I figured since my male is neutered that she'd be ok going without, well I defintely decided to make an appointment to get her fixed. This is a good warning thread but I'm really sorry you had to learn this the hard way.

LSM, I hope your baby gets better as soon as possible.

I learned a lot from this thread. My chi was neutered at 7 months and I always wished I'd waited till he had one set of babies, but at least having it done has helped his health and behavior.

Oh god, my little Missi (Chinese Crested Powderpuff) will be 5 this year and she isnt spayed. I dont want to put her unde the knife, it seems so alien to me to give her to someone who will put her under then cut her open.

She is shy aswell and leaving her in a crate at the vets is a horrible enough idea.
