    Default Robbery/shooting in my apt's...

So in the past month, there has been about 3-4 robberies in my apt complex, including one the other day in which the robber actually shot at the guy who lived in the apt they were robbing. All in my apt. I also just found out about a guy who was shot (12 shots heard by neigbors) and ran over by a car in an apt complex close to mine. I'm just getting real nervous about my safety and my apartment getting broken into because there has been alot of violence going on around here lately...There are alot of drug (crack) addicts in my apt complex who aren't afraid to steal for drug money.
Anyone in my position? Should I get a gun license or something?
And no, I can't move into a nicer complex because my credit is bad.

    Blargh!

Can't you get one of your parents to co-sign for another place? I'm sure all the police blotter reports are convincing enough for them to take the risk of helping you afford a better place.
Be safe! Do you have a dog? I'd get a gun too....

I haven't been in your position but i have a friend who is. Make sure to deposit all of your cash and don't buy nice things. If you don't think you could actually use the gun, don't buy one and buy pepper spray or a taser (or whatever) instead. Keep a low profile.
If you think school is hard, try being stupid.

No, unforunately my parents are worse off than me when it comes to credit, and they are actually going through plenty financial trouble of their own. Moving isn't an option right now.
I don't have a dog because it's not fair to keep a dog in a small apt when I'm not home that much...I just don't like dogs in apartments.

Bella- Yeah, I have a can of pepper spray. Where could I get the taser? My mom got me the pepper spray at a flea market or something.

D00d, then get a shotgun and blast away if needed. You can only make the world a better place by defending your home that way "if need be" (I'm assuming you'd ascertain who you're shooting at first...Low-cost gun safety courses are available to the gun-buying public.)

What is WRONG in America when criminals get more breaks than working people....? Geez.

Oh yeah, if I decided to get a gun I would definitely take gun courses first. I think I might end up looking into getting my gun license. Do you get the license depending on the gun or what? How does this work?

If you're 21 then you don't even need a license... simply walk into the nearest shop that carries handguns and purchase one. They check your driver's license if there are any felonies attached to it, you fill out the paperwork, pay, and pick it up 4 business days later (required by law). Make sure you keep it in a safe spot and you're the only one that knows where the key is for the trigger safety. With all the crackheads in your complex I'd recommend a 19mm or .40 caliber, with the .40 having a little more stopping power. Don't get a .22, cuz if someone is really hopped up on something he won't even feel it.

Pricewise you're looking at somewhere between $400.00 and $700.00 for a good Smith & Wesson, Beretta, or Glock. Stay away from Ruger, Sig, or Walther.

So since I don't need a license, are there certain restrictions to how I can use it or where I can keep it etc? Will they explain all that to me when I go buy it?

BTW...Since all the shootings these days, I think it's a shame how easy it is for anyone to get a gun...Sorry, I just threadjacked my own thread- lol!

In your home, you can do with it whatever you want, except shoot it of course if not in danger. But if one of your friends lives in a remote area somewhere in the sticks, you can pop a few cans.. safety first though. There are also gun clubs that have shooting ranges, which I suggest you find a friend that can show you how to use it safely and effectively.
The salesperson will explain everything to you (also required by law), which means he will go over the basic rules of handguns. IMO, check if one of your friends has some experience or has bought a gun before and have him accompany you to the store...

Depends very much on where you live. If you could say (or prefer to PM) more can be said. Like if you live in CA,NY,MA,CA, or MD you stand a better chance of winning multiple State lotteries than exercising your Second amendment Right to keep and bear arms.

Here is a start. I can't emphasize enough that the more training you have, the better.

Most States require no license at all. Completion of the BATF (Bureau of Alcohol, tobacco, and Firearms) form 4473 at purchase is all that is requiered. Most States have an Instant Background check (instant haha) that checks your information against criminal, and terrorist databases. the wait is any from 5 minutes to 24 hours typically 30 minutes to an hour here in Colorado.

Do anything to move. Your definitely in a bad situation. Careful out there.

Like Municipal Atlanta or a suburb. City ordinances apply too.

they didnt make me wait 4 days... i barely waited 20 minutes. but then... i got mine at a pawn shop in a little tiny ass town somewhere by ft riley... so that may have something to do with it, although i know that i did have to fill out some paper work and get a bg check done, which literally took 5 minutes, the pawn shop owner happened to be one of the cops for the town...

I'm afraid of having my own gun because i worry the attacker will take it and use it against me. But my fiance said if i ever need to shoot someone I'm to just "Spray and pray" I never had a gun in my house before, but i'll be honest when i say i think I sleep a little better in the same room as a desert eagle. (i don't suggest getting one of them, they are very heavy!)

My bf owns a pawnshp and we sell tasers, so maybe a pawnshop? He bought them on ebay, so if you do ebay at all you could find some on there. I'd personally rather have a gun...you have to get close to somebody to have pepper spray.
Do you have a peephole so you can see whoes at your door. You should get a deadbolt too if you don't already have one on your door.
I'm sorry youre in this postion and you can't move, just do everything you can to be safe and be wary of strangers.

Like I've said twice I think, moving is not an option because my credit is bad as well as some of my rental history. As much as I would love to move, it is NOT an option.

Ok, thanks- I didn't know ebay could sell stuff like that. I'll check that out.
Yeah, I have a peephole, and a deadbolt as well, thank God!

I see. I would live with a friend, family member or get a room share off craigslist if I were you. You can find some people to live with who won't run your credit. I don't think getting a gun is the only solution here. Are you prepared to kill someone who tries to rob you? Imagine if they had a gun and saw that you did, too. You would be gone. I'm worried about this situation. I hope you can find some other place to go.

Gun laws vary by state and locality. Your best bet would be to go to a gun shop and ask the guy there what you have to do in order to become a legal gun owner. Also make sure you take classes, and get a concealed-carry permit if you can so that you have your gun on you as you walk from your car to your apartment at night. Make DAMN sure you know how to use your gun and are prepared to shoot to kill. People get killed by their own guns when they're just waving them around instead of shooting them.

If I were in your position, I would at least be looking for a better environment. I mean, there have got to be plenty of apartment complexes in greater Atlanta; this can't be the ONLY one that would take you with your credit.
