Gun laws vary..you will have to have a license for THAT gun..registered. But to get a license/permit to carry(have it outside your home) you'll have to take classes(again..depending on the laws where you are)

I disagree on the brands. Glock may be too much if you've never handled before. I have several Walthers(they are used in the German army) and they are wonderful. They are small but powerful.

Get an alarm system..it will be your best defense.

My husband and I have some guns, but the best deterrant may be other things such as:

    > Better outside lighting
    > Security camera connected to your computer, mounted outside up high but still obviously visible
    > Alarm stickers on doors and windows
    > Neighbors who look out for you, and vice versa
    > Being aware of your surroundings
    > Not having anything of value visible through windows
    > Properly working locks on doors and windows, plus a good quality deadbolt or two.
    > Hinge-pins in your door - these are pins that are on the hinge side of the door. When the door closes, they go into the wood which prevents kicking in the door easily.
    > Replace your door with a solid wood or metal door
    > Peep hole.

If you really think you need a gun, look into your state laws:

    (Cached)

Read a book on responsible gun ownership, such as:

    and concealed gun ownership:

Then consider something you can handle. We have:

    1. Remington 870 12 gauge shotguns, with lights attached.
This is a big, bad shotgun. However, I can shoot it more accurately than my husband! He bought a Knoxx recoild reducing grip for it which makes shooting it really easy:

    2. A Smith and Wesson Airweight 638 revolver.
This is a great, tiny gun which fits my hand very well. It's very light. My husband carries it every day, and has a CCW license for it. It just slips into his pocket and you cannot even tell it's there.

    He's also looking at this:

At first I was freaked out by having any guns in the house. However, he travels for business frequently, and recently it was nice to know I could protect myself.

Be smart, take classes, ask lots of questions, shoot any gun you think you might buy, read some books, and remember that a gun can often land you in prison for murder - or injure yourself, friends, kids, or family.

I learned with a 22 and judging from the holes I blew out of trees and such, I think it would stop any man.

Pepper spray will not stop a cracked out wacko, it will just enrage them more. Several people have confirmed this to me. I think the police pepper spray is more strong than what is availalble to public. Or maybe comes in larger cans.

I have bad credit, too--and I have lived in some very nasty places, but surely you can find somewhere to live with a lower percentage of crackheads, if you look around. People on that shit get crazy. Get the hell out of that place, ASAP. I've been around that shit plenty in Daytona, it's horrible. People die and no one thinks anything of it or cares when they get into it bad.

With all respect, even considering the surprising destructive capacity of a .22 bullet to the average human (such as Robert Kennedy), people on crack, blow, PCP, etc., can be virtually unstoppable without a shotgun or similarly drastic projectile weapon.

I always thought the movie Scarface was brilliant but ridiculous in the death scene, where he gets shot 500 times and is still telling them all to fuck off, eat this, say hello to my little friend. Until he gets both barrels of a gigantic shotgun.

Then I saw this FBI film on gunshot wounds, and there he was--Tony fucking Montana with 500 bullet holes in him, and not one or two, but five huge shotgun holes in him. Which is what finally stopped him. The guy was so wired the bullets had no effect.

I'm in your shoes, my neighborhood is really bad.

    Here's what I did:
-I bought pepperspray, I carry it with me everywhere.
-If you can get motion-detector lights installed, do it! I bought the kind that look like if rocks, they are solar powered too. I hid them in the corners of my porch. Light is your friend.
-If you have any sort of front yard, maintain it. This is apart of the broken window theory; which basically says that nicer your property looks, the less likely it is to be burglarized.
-I strap my money to my ankle when I leave work at night. I carry a fake wallet with me too. That way, when I get robbed (which has happened), I can just toss the fake wallet and run without losing all my money and IDs.
-I bought the club for my car.
-I got theft insurance for my apartment, it's not pricey.
-I called the DEA all the time.
-Don't make eye contact with anyone. Especially the crackheads.
-When I leave the apartment at night, I keep a radio or the TV on.
-When I arrive at my apartment at night, I have my stripper bag ready to go. I never fumble around in my car at night.

Sigh. Living in the ghetto sucks.

Depends on where you live. The guys in the gun shop will know for sure.

Consider a monitored security system for when you are sleeping/not home.

Really DJ? That is fucked up. I suppose its possible.

..I mean, if you got into a standoff and shoot someone but don't kill them, that would be a bad situation.

What kind of guns do police use? The look kinda big and automatic?

    Tell me about it!!!

So where and how should I go about looking for theft insurance? How does that work? If my apartment was robbed, would I be compensated or what?

So I went looking (google) and found a women's gun forum. I have looked at very little on each. In case you may feel more comfortable asking a woman who is knowledgeable about firearms.

If you collect enough cash and pay three-six months rent up front at a place.. they tend to just 'look away' at your credit score.

Yeah, that's why cops hate dealing with people really wired on certain drugs. Not only are they desperate, they feel no pain, and will keep coming at you even with soon-to-be-fatal wounds.

The FBI went on a major rearming program after one guy who had suffered a fatal wound killed and maimed a whole bunch of FBI agents anyway. Certain places you get hit, you are going to die no matter how good the doctor is or how fast they get you there. Like the aorta or the vena cava, the big artery/vein running up and down your abdomen--the main blood flow to and from the heart. That's where they got the guy who killed all the agents--and he wasn't even on drugs, I don't think, just desperate and pissed off.

But the other guy sure was. His body was just literally riddled with bullets.

Neither one cared if they were going to die, they just wanted to take as many as they could with them.

The average person will fall down automatically when they get shot, they also went into this in the video. This is wrong, you have better odds if you keep running and/or fighting, trying to get away. People on hard drugs don't tend to fall down, and it can actually make them worse to shoot them, unless you blow their fucking head off, lol!

Different agencies use different guns. I don't think any caliber handgun has good "stopping power". Some argue that a .45 has better stopping power, but if you compare the .45ACP, .357sig, .40S&W, and 9mm, they all have similar penetration and cavity size with hollow points. If I really had to protect myself, the first weapon I'd grab from my safe would be a shotgun. And I definitely wouldn't use my .22lr plinking rifle

Anyone in my position? Should I get a gun license or something?
And no, I can't move into a nicer complex because my credit is bad.
I don't know about "nicer" per se, but you can look for something in a safer area no? A gun license is an option, but requires a gun to be effective (which costs $$$) and being able to use the gun when needed, which requires some training, etc. I am all for women learning to shoot and protect themselves, but some thought and real consideration needs to be done before you take that route. See if there is a chapter of the Second Amend Sisters in your state which is a group run for women by women:

Make sure you keep it in a safe spot and you're the only one that knows where the key is for the trigger safety. With all the crackheads in your complex I'd recommend a 19mm or .40 caliber, with the .40 having a little more stopping power. Don't get a .22, cuz if someone is really hopped up on something he won't even feel it.

Pricewise you're looking at somewhere between $400.00 and $700.00 for a good Smith & Wesson, Beretta, or Glock. Stay away from Ruger, Sig, or Walther.
My Ruger P85 is one of the least troublesome, most accurate pistols that I have. I suppose you'll have a degree of brand loyalty in anything, but I am unaware of any failing inherent in any of those last three manufacturer's products.

Also, if you can find the current version, Glazer safety slugs are good ammo for places like apartment buildings, where you don't want a bullet to keep going through the next couple of walls if you miss.
