    Pet Sitting Liability?

I posted an ad on CL offering to pet sit. I have one potential person email with interest. My hubby's friend says I should make liability forms for the pet owners to sign just in case something happens to the animal while it is under my care, so they cannot sue me.

I don't even know where to start with this.... I thought by pet sitting you were taking on the liability of the pet. I've never encountered this with any baby sitters or pet sitters.

    Is this common? Um, help?

Do you mean liability for yourself in case you get bit or the animal breaks something in your house? Or liability for the pet owner in case something happens to the animal?

For the former, you can actually get pet sitting liabillity insurance:

for the latter..I found a company that posts its contract online so you can adjust as needed and print out for yourself:

I would be watching the pet at the owner's house.

    My confusion is this:

I am there to watch the pet and make sure it doesn't get hurt/ the owner's house doesn't get wrecked. What am I NOT liable for then??

Is this all pretty common among the pet sitting world? Because admittedly I feel like this is a casual thing and a contract is so formal.... am I just being silly?

Well, personally unless it is for a friend. I'd cover my ass. If hte dog gets rowdy and knocks a vase over for example..you never know if the owners will expect YOU to pay for that. I'd have a simple one page contract that basically says that you are not responsible for things like that.

Oh, ok. The lady that emailed me wants someone to stay overnight for weekends to petsit her two small dogs. I told her I'd only be in town for about a month, but I'd be willing to do it. No response yet.

    Another question:

    What are goot petsitting rates?

    Hourly?

    Overnight?

R suggested $40 for overnight with those 2 small dogs. Thoughts?

Googling pet sitting rates for Arizona I came up with quite a few. Most did not offer overnights, and th ones who did charged from $65-$85 to be there for 12 hrs(7pm-7am mostly)

    Dont sell yourself short!

Well, that seems to be the area standard. Of course...these places may be licensed with referances and all...but I still wouldnt charge less than $60. I mean..for overnight..12 hours? Thats less than minimum wage as it is!

Yeah, I'm not licensed or anything like the places that popped up on Google. So I was thinking:

Overnight (12 hours): $60 (up to 2 animals, more if more than 2)

    Days/Nights Hourly: $10/hour

What do you think? I don't want to charge what the pros charge because I'm not a pro.

Make sure the dogs dont have anything wrong with them first!

Some owners are stupid enough not to say. Like for instance, my eldest dog has Addisons, a soft palate problem (sometimes chokes on his water) and gets colic when he eats to fast. For these reasons many dog sitters wont sit him. Not that Id be tempted to lie about his health but Iv heard some owners do.
