    Default Flex Fuel Vehicles

Well, after owning my SUV for 6 years, I feel that it's time to be put out to pasture. It eats up too much gas and has damaged the environment as much as I'm going to allow it to. I bought a Prius and am pleased overall with it. Plus I got a nice break on my taxes for buying it.

Yet, I really miss being able to drive over curbs and all the fun crazy things I do in my SUV..I really take her off road a lot too. There is something impowering about a big car..Plus she sits so high up that I can see for miles ahead of me. I've decided on purchasing a Flex Fuel SUV next year..Natural gas doesn't harm the environment, plus it's less expensive than regular fuel. Not to mention I can have a kit hooked up to my gas line that allows me to fill up at home for about $1.00 a gallon. Yep, you read right ONE DOLLAR..
I've narrowed my choices down to a Tahoe or an Avalanche.

Does anyone own either of these cars ? Or have more info on natural gas vehicles ?

No, but if you sell the Prius, let me know? I've been feeling guilty about being one person in a truck for a few years.

Does it have the carpool lane sticker?

You thought a Prius was green? Ummmm making batteries or worse disposing of them is a very brown and enviromentally damaging procress. All that lead and acid to make the batteries. Then in less than ten years you have to completely replace the batteries, that is about the cost of a new car. How much to dispose of a Prius since with the battery bank one cannot be tossed into a car shredder. I'm just saying you got taken by the hype, nothing more.

Yes, it does !! The stickers make it so much easier, I swear it cuts my commute time by 50% or more at times. They are becoming harder to come by, due to supply and demand. My Prius rides super smooth, I feel like I'm floating on air when I drive and before I know it I speeding ! LOL

Have you test driven one yet ?

I haven't driven one, but a friend has one. Occasionally, I ride with her. It seems to be a great little car.

oh boy what a bunch phooey not to mention an attempted threadjack. Plus I'm betting Farrah and other people interested in greener than regular cars already knows the real facts.

So let's stay on topic if you don't mind. Thanks!

I'd too would like to read more from anyone who actually owns or drives one these suv's that Farrah mentioned or any another type of flex fuel.

Toyota is supposed to be recycling the batteries now. The cost of the battery isn't the same as purchasing a new car. I don't know where you got that from. I believe it's $7,000 to $10,000 depending on where it's purchased. Also, the battery lasts a very long time. I rarely keep a car more than 2 years, I'm a creature of change. (My SUV is the first car I've EVER had this long.) So let's just say that if and when the battery gives out I probably won't have it..But, who knows I might to keep it longer. I save so much $$$ on gas, it's unbelievable. I put in $10 today got 1/2 a tank and that half a tank will last me @ least 4-7 days.
I drove my SUV (which runs on PREMIUM gas I might add) yesterday, I spent
$ 20 and got a 1/4 tank of gas that got me little of nowhere before it was back on E. (I keep her on E to prevent me from driving her !! I consider her semi retired at this point.)
I used to spend around $200 a week on my usual 3 tanks of gas ! Now I'm spending $55 ! That's enough to make the fact that I might have to spend X amount of $$ on a battery, totally irrelevant .
In fact I'll end up spending $220 on gas each month ,which will save me a grand total of $6,960 over the next 12 mths. Looks like I've already paid for the replacement battery within the first year !!!

Let's see and if I decide to keep it until the battery needs to be replaced
(for arguements sake, let's put the number at 7 years ) I would will save $48,720 in gas !

Me too..I was looking for a way to convert my SUV but, I haven't run across one yet. I had thought about getting an old school diesel Bronco and converting it to bio but, there weren't enough gas stations that sold the fuel.

I love my wife VW TDI, gets 51mpg and has plenty of power. The flex fuel cars are a good option too, if there are filling stations readily available near you.

The new VW Rabbit/Golf TDI Is awesome.

Read this Farrah and anyone else interested:

Especially when he talks about the Golf/Rabbit vs. the Prius. The difference is definitely that the Golf is fun to drive AND efficient. A true driver's car. Just thought you'd be interested if anything else to read about it.

    I thought this was interesting

"You can however purchase a vegetable oil kit for the Golf, which allows you to run SVO when the engine is warm, and regular diesel or biodiesel when it's cold. The system adds a second fuel tank with a switch and fuel warmer, at a cost of about $800. With this system in place you can run your car with used cooking oil collected for FREE from restaurants."

Eh? What? Hush lil miss cranky pants. My reply was to Farrah, when the reply is for you, then you will know it.

Hybrid are not as green as they are marketed. While they are 'Greener" to a degree in actual use; the manufacturing and disposal of a hybrid is no where near green. Besides lead there is the toxic heavy metals and acids, these are part of the process of manufacure and are components that make the vehicle function.

Read the pros and cons BEFORE you by especially when your attemping to be environmentally sensitive.

One bit on the environmental impact of battery manufacture.

So the price comes down from $10,000 to $3000 dollar for a battery pack replace after 100,000 miles. comapre that to the much lower tune up costs for a comparable economy model civic or corolla.

Was a tidbit here. if you have problems check for a corroded connection instead of the dealership wanting to swap batteries for thousands of dollars.

I have a Hyundai elantra that I use for running errands and what not vs my Ford F150 that I use for when hauling stuff and when we have blizzards and other bad weather here in Colorado. I rather like that little car and am thinking of buying another, though used.

This is a cool concept however good luck with finding the cooking oil for free , many places filter this oil and reuse it multiple times , we did at my last job . And it's a big business actually so we know what that means , they use to take all the grease ( from a grease trap ) like a 1,000 gallons a pop and you don't want to know what that's used for .

The problem with fryer oils is the animal fats from deep fried foods contaminates them and disrupts the catalyst process. If you can find vegetable oils that are uncontaminated say unused surplus (read rancid) that would be better since the plan is not to ingest them.

We want to hear about the flex fuel suv options from people with personal experience owning one and not a bunch of phooey against hybrid batteries. So if you own a flex fuel suv then let's hear about that instead, ok? Thanks.

So, you are a public transportation kind of guy? You, know, to protect the planet?

I know what you are saying, though. I skipped the Prius in favor of a Corolla for the same reason. The gas mileage wasn't that much different. You really have to do some research to dig up that kind of info on ther batteries, though. They don't talk about those kinds of thing in the showroom or include it on the sticker price.

Now I'm trading my Corolla for a bicycle and a bus pass. I'm not dancing anymore and really don't have a need of a car. I didn't have a car before I danced and got one a few months after starting for safety and to travel to bachelor parties. Now that I'm not dancing I'm back to bike riding.

Those natural gas vehicles sound awesome. I don't have gas available in my neighborhood, though. Can you fuel up at a regular filling station like you can with propane?

Some places offer a storage tank and home delivery. Or if you are scientifically inclined, mixing your own batch isn't too hard. 99% vegetable oil and 1% kerosene. Buying used and filtered (cleaned) fry oil, I've heard, is uber cheap. Like .50 a gallon or less. Get yourself a 220 gallon tank and a small pump and you've got homemade fuel ready whenever you want.

Or you can buy a kit. Click here.

Ha Ha , I live in the dorms so I don't have a commute at all for now. I miss biking to and fro, I did not get a drivers license until I was 22. I have to start up 6the car and truck to charge the batteries weekly.

Since you are doing contracting keep you eye out for a utility vehicle. the were lots of trucks converted to propane (LP) or natural gas in Oregon.

As for flex fuels. what have the done to prevent the alcohol for breaking down seals and gaskets? Seems that would be an upkeep problem to me.
