    Default City of Portland

This isn't really a question about the clubs. My partner and I are planning a trip up there with an eye towards moving if we like it. We want to check out the various neighborhoods and see what apartments are like and try to narrow it down some.

I love the PNW and have never been to Portland so I don't know where to start.

Is it true that you can smoke in the bars/SCs there? That's the only drawback I can see.

What are some nice, safe, fun parts of town.

What parts are more run down or potentially dangerous?

    Thanks!

I think in 2009 it will be illegal to smoke in bars.
ok so northeast is pretty ghetto although there are a few pockets that are kinda nice but you will always have to travel threw some shittyness

southeast his a HUGE area so there is a little of everything out there.(you could find a small safe area maybe)

inner southeast (lived there for some time)is pretty cool lots of natraul stores hawthorne dis. its fairly safe and hella fun!

    northside is shit stay away!

    have fun in p-town!

The neighborhoods I'm looking into moving to from my concrete box in the sky downtown are :

    Hawthorne/Belmont
    Alberta/Mississippi
this cute little neighborhood in SW a little east of OHSU with a bunch of old victorian houses and lots of gardens and quiet streets.

    Portland is awesome...

The only place I would stay away from if you want to live in the metro area are certain places in North Portland. Overall it seems like a pretty safe city, I'm not scared walking around by myself at night.

Some popular areas, with lots of shops within easy walking distance:

*- SW Portland around Belmont, Hawthorne Blvd, and Division Street, streets numbered in 10's through 40's.

*- NW 21st and 23rd avenue, going north of Burnside.

*- NE Alberta St. around 15th avenue, plus or minus several blocks.

I live in the Kerns neighborhood which I like (around NE 28th ave from Burnside to Sandy Blvd)-- lots of interesting stuff within easy walking distance. Some homeless people but they are nice (they do not harass you, and some are interesting people to talk to). I've left valuables in plain view on my front porch for about a month (as a test) and nothing gets stolen. All my neighbors are nice, except for a crazy one about 1 1/2 blocks away. Interestingly, 3 out of my 4 immediate neighboring homes are of same-sex couples.

Finding apartment is frustrating, according to everyone I've heard deal with it. I don't have direct experience.

Check www portlandmaps dot com for lots of interesting info about neighborhoods, including detailed crime statistics.

Another neighborhood to avoid is the outer SE area known as "felony flats".

What city are you from? I don't agree really with these posts about N/NE Portland being very run down -- but then again I'm from Los Angeles so my standards may be different. In terms of affordability you probably would like the Eastside more (Southeast and Northeast, lots of rentable houses). I live on what is probably the busiest street in the city and it's actually great. There's a hobo that comes by to pick up the cans on our porch sometimes and we get to see crazy police action on Saturday nights from our porch but I've never felt threatened, just in the midst of the city.

Thanks for the info. I'm reading a guide book trying to learn more about the city.

I've heard there is a really high homeless population. Is that mainly downtowm?

Anyone live in the suburbs? Or across the border in WA?
