I've used the heavy, creamy Pantene brand shampoo and conditioner all my life. I thought that all the dimethicone (a kind of silicone, the stuff in the clear John Frieda hair serum) was good for my hair, but it's really a heroin addiction for my hair. Things are great for a day, but I have to keep using it. You see, the silicone coats the hair, making it seem smooth and shiny. However, after a day or so, the stuff wears off and exposes split ends and dry hair. I haven't washed my hair today, and it feels dry and frizzy.
Heavy dimethicone-containing shampoo is not good, as it coats your hair before the moisturizing conditioner can nourish it. Heavy conditioners are good for dry, pouffy, coarse, or African hair, but like I said, they coat your hair when it's actually very dry underneath. I was using the Pantene Smooth and Sleek line, which contains very high levels of dimethicone.
I'm trying shampoo without dimethicone and conditioner with no or much less dimethicone to see if it's better. I looked around, and a lot of them contain dimethicone, particularly the moisturizing, anti-frizz, and smoothing formulas. Those without dimethicone tend to be the clarifying formulas, which strips my hair when used often. I got some dimethicone-free Tresemme shampoo with a lot of vitamins, proteins, and plant extracts, and some Tresemme conditioner that has dimethicone much lower on the ingredients list than the Pantene.
Has anyone else had the same experience? Can you recommend other brands and formulas that don't give the temporary fix that heavy hair products do?
