Default Silicone-containing shampoo and condition not good for my hair

I've used the heavy, creamy Pantene brand shampoo and conditioner all my life. I thought that all the dimethicone (a kind of silicone, the stuff in the clear John Frieda hair serum) was good for my hair, but it's really a heroin addiction for my hair. Things are great for a day, but I have to keep using it. You see, the silicone coats the hair, making it seem smooth and shiny. However, after a day or so, the stuff wears off and exposes split ends and dry hair. I haven't washed my hair today, and it feels dry and frizzy.

Heavy dimethicone-containing shampoo is not good, as it coats your hair before the moisturizing conditioner can nourish it. Heavy conditioners are good for dry, pouffy, coarse, or African hair, but like I said, they coat your hair when it's actually very dry underneath. I was using the Pantene Smooth and Sleek line, which contains very high levels of dimethicone.

I'm trying shampoo without dimethicone and conditioner with no or much less dimethicone to see if it's better. I looked around, and a lot of them contain dimethicone, particularly the moisturizing, anti-frizz, and smoothing formulas. Those without dimethicone tend to be the clarifying formulas, which strips my hair when used often. I got some dimethicone-free Tresemme shampoo with a lot of vitamins, proteins, and plant extracts, and some Tresemme conditioner that has dimethicone much lower on the ingredients list than the Pantene.

Has anyone else had the same experience? Can you recommend other brands and formulas that don't give the temporary fix that heavy hair products do?

Apparently, Bumble and Bumble contains no silicones...and has been highly recommended to me by many people...it's hard to get ahold of tho, so I haven't tried it yet. Can only be bought in Salons, and I'm finding not many salons carry it.
Gotta get around to ordering online

I'm going to miss the spun-glass look that the silicone shampoos gave me. I'm half Asian, but I have fine hair rather than the thick, straight, coarse hair that I wish I had gotten from my mom. Silicone-based shampoos gave me the effect of straight Asian hair. However, I'm sure that my hair will stop breaking so much after I switch, and my flat iron and some straightening gel might be able to do the trick.

Folica.com is a great site for ordering most hair products, from flat irons to shampoo.

TIGI Bedhead Moisture Maniac set is completely cone free and relatively easy to find.

I've posted on this same topic before. Don't worry about the shine, you will get it back after a while on a cone free regimine.

Regis Olive Oil line is great for shine, the shampoo is cone free, the cond very low on cones. Some of my faves are ABBA, even there smoothing cream is cone free (it takes about a half dollar sized dollop though), Nexxus, Therappe, Humectress, and Keraphix, also Joico's K-PAC. Ojon's Moisturizing line is also fab, but it is uber expensive.

    Good Luck!

I quite like the silicone effect and plan on continuing it. I know its bad for my hair, and I did used to use TIGI all the time but got sick of not being able to get a bursh thru my hair after washing it.

I have very thick, wavy to curly hair thats very wild. I neeeed silicone!! LOL

Try Ojon's Treatment, you can use it as a smoother in place of the silicone ones. It's natural oil's and actually moisturizing, as opposed to drying. I have wavy, frizzy, super thick hair too, and it works wonderfully.

It's not in walgreens here. your lucky. I really want some!

Only place I can find it in Vegas is Venetian's salon.

According to B&B website, they have a few other locations wher eit's sold, but when I called thoes salons, they all told me they no longer carried it.

There was one salon way way on the other side of town that carries it...but to go during business hours that far would take me 2 hours with traffic.

how do you hair-knowledgeable women feel about sulfates...i've heard they are drying and to be avoided and then i've heard that's hogwash. ???

Definitely not hogwash for some people. It's an individual thing, some tolerate sulfates more than others so it's hard to tell.

Can't hurt to pick up some sulphate free shampoo and experiment.

Here is a list of sulfates and a little info.

    Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate-very harsh
    Ammonium Laureth Sulfate- harsh
    Sodium Lauryl Sulfate- harsh
    Sodium Laureth Sulfate-milder, still harsh
Sodium Myreth Sulfate, TEA Lauryl Sulfate & TEA Laureth sulfate-decent choices
Coconut Soap, Olive Oil Soap or Cocamidopropyl Betine-Best choice

I love Abba's Creme moist, if you are looking for a gentle shampoo. I've also heard some great things about the following:

    Aveda Sap Moss
    MOP C-System Clean & C-System Hydrating
    Jessicurl
    Kiehl's Castille

    Hope this helps

Wow, Circe! I just spent a LOT of time checking out that forum. Thanks!

Do you have any experience with sulphate and 'cone free shampoos and conditioners that actually do what they're supposed to do and are pleasant to use? A lot of the hippy shit smells like crap and doesn't clean or condition. No offense to hippies

^Isn't it awesome? It has a wealth of information on alternative hair care

I use Suave Naturals conditioners which are cone free, though the shampoos in the same line are chock full of really harsh sulphates. The conditioners smell like various fruits, such as strawberry, apple and coconut!

And I conditioner only wash, so I can't help you as to shampoos. But you should be able to find something that doesn't smell like rotting patchouli

    same with devines.

Silicone is soooo bad for your hair . If you use a smoothing serum with it in it , it seems to be fine but never for a shampoo or conditioner.

^Lush puts sulphates in their conditioners for some reason.

Yeah, I don't use Lush's conditioners for that reason. I have found TIGI to be the best for my hair and tend to stick to their products for my hair. Even though most of them have "cones", I find they are always towards the end of the list of ingredients, meaning it's not a main ingredient. I think it's just enough to give my hair "slip", so it detangles easily.

I am buying the Moisture Maniac conditioner this week tho and am going for an entirely cone-free shampoo and conditioner. I will let you guys know how my hair reacts.
