Default I can't lose weight? WTF.

All summer I've been fast walking this hilly 3 mile trail twice a day. It's not like a treadmill, but it is cardio. I've been doing push ups (I'm only up to ten), crunches (two sets of fifty), and reverse crunches (the same) every day.

I don't eat any grains or legumes at all. Mostly just meat, veggies, and fruit. I've had ice cream like three times. The last couple weeks I've even cut out chocolate, sugary fruits, and starchy veggies.

And I've lost... nothing. Zero. I weigh exactly the same as I did at the begining of the summer, my measurements are the same, and if anything I look softer. It's starting to drive me crazy.

Do I have to go to a gym and get work out crazy to lose weight? What am I doing wrong?

based on what you've said, three possibilities jump out:

--not having your heart rate up long enough for an extended period of time (at least 30 mins straight each day)

--eating the same number of or slightly more calories than you are burning in effort/exercise

--never varying your daily caloric intake. the occasional day of eating somewhat more or somewhat less than usual helps prevent your metabolism from 'sticking' on one particular caloric level/range.

Have your measurements changed? Sometimes weight stays the same while your actual measurements get smaller.

Also, how many sets of push ups are you doing? Are you doing them right? How about lunges? One set of push ups and a bunch of crunches don't create much of a caloric deficit and that kind of workout doesn't encourage physological changes.

How often are you doing your workout and for how long?

A pretty good resource for workout routines is Oxygen magazine. THey usually include workouts you can do at home too.

You might want to include some jumproping too.

Perhaps a high protein, low carb diet doesn't suit your body type. You may need to experiment a little and see if something else works. I'd advise mixing up your exercise routine as well.

I follow a diet similar to yours. I'd try increasing the ratio of green vegetables and low starch fruits to meat and watching either the fat content in meat, or the portion size, or both. I tend to gravitate more towards seafood and leaner steaks and that works well for me.

Perhaps your body is at a good weight though? And people do go through plateaus. Or maybe you're gaining muscle and dropping fat.

I've found with paleo I don't really get rail skinny like I have an grain filled, fat-free diets...but my weight becomes distributed nicely. Like my belly becomes tight and and I lose weight overall but maintain my shape.

lower body exercises with moderate to high weights work wonders. you don't have to go to the gym, but you do need to have weights and probably a bench or something stable and equally high...

    do:
    step ups onto the bench
squats (incl. variations, plie is my favorite)
    lunges (incl. variations)
stiff-legged deadlifts (single leg if you've got good balance. this is my favorite.)

but yeah, check out oxygen for good routines and info. their glutes specials have been amazing. and make sure you use proper form, especially with the deadlifts.

doing lower body weights got me looking soooo fucking good when i was being good. at the time, i didn't have money for junk food, only healthy food, and i lost probably 10 pounds in a week. then i made some damn good money and ate crap even though i was too busy to work out. stupid. of course, i was also doing cardio before weights and yoga after and on off-days, which helped. but my weight stayed the same till i got serious about the weight regimen. oddly enough, i didn't do it to lose weight. i thought i had gained till i weighed myself, cos i'd been eating soooo much. so i tried on a pair jeans that had been way too small and they fit perfectly.

it made me ravenous. make sure you've got access to good food as soon as you're done, and tailor the rest of your eating around the big post-workout meal. and once the weight is gone, alter your eating habits accordingly if you stop working out as much or it'll come right back.

with cardio, as long as you're breathing too hard to carry on a conversation, you should be getting enough of a workout. if you aren't, up the intensity.

damn...now i'm all excited about the gym opening in 2 hours.

best weight loss advice i have for what works well for me.. everyone is different.. dont eat past when the sun starts going down which is around 2-3ish..
i know everyone will say no no no proven science says 5 or so small meals every so many hours.. oh well .. i finally read in a chinese medicine book that monks who are in really good health only eat once a day.. early in the day just make sure it has variety.. a good dose of everything you should be getting each day at least..
so basically within an hour of waking up when my body is raring to go and digestion i believe is at its peak get a big meal in.. i do best with high protein like an omelet with cheese and good fats and as many vegetables including the staples you should have like onion and garlic ..followed by a small bowl of oatmeal .. the water i use for the oatmeal i put frozen berries in so they thaw and get sweet .. so im getting dairy, protein, vegetables, fruit and whole grain.. i pretty much live off those calories the rest of the day.. drinking lots of water and teas with honey and my downfall coffee with half/half and raw cane sugar.. if you feel you need more food snack on fruits and veggies or a salad
you have to do what works for you based on how you feel.. i feel best on this energy wise... sleep wise.. and the little belly bloat i used to always seem to have is completly gone
throw in some good exercise and im good to go
its not the most socially acceptable way to eat but pretty much when left to my own i do this .. and the occassion when i go to dinner or there is a family gathering or something i eat of course.. but honestly am not very hungry so i dont overeat.. as long as ive had that big hearty breakfast and am drinking plenty of fluids

the only way to really lose weight is to burn more calories than you put in. at least, that's what I have heard. Any way of doing this will work, and the effectiveness varies from person to person as to how fast you lose the amount you want. and liquid calories count! what are you drinking?

^It's not the calories...it's the fat.

Calories are just a measurement of heat. Eat 1200 calories of junk food per day and you'll gain weight. Eat 1500 calories of healthy food and you'll lose weight.

You have to eat about every 2-3 waking hours to keep your metabolism high. Cardio does not raise your metabolism. If you are starving yourself, your body will not "willing" let go of the nutrients you put into your body, no matter how healthy they are.

Eat often, cardio often, weights every other day...and clean up your eating habits.

As for the monk comment...I would like to point out that people who do not lead active lifestyles do not need as much nourishment. For someone who is working out, dancing, etc...there is no way you could really subsist off of eating once per day. Your body is starving and although you may not think too much of it now...when you get older, you'll regret it.

Also, if you are weight training, you can be losing fat and gaining muscle (as has already been stated). Do NOT go by the numbers on the scale, but DO go by the fit of the clothes.

My guess is you might be just consuming too many calories. When I went on Weight Watchers I lost weight with no exercise, eating all kinds of foods, but counting my points.

Hm. Thanks for all the feedback, everyone. I guess I'll be more concious about eating more often and earlier in the day. I think I'll join the gym and get on tonalin, too.

Also if it helps any. Eat your last carbs 5-6 hours before bed so your body has time to digest and use them. Giving up late night carbs such as whole wheat anything, high sugar fruit (ie. pineapple) etc. has been working.

FYI, high fat amounts in diets or meals slow digestion. Less fat in a meal will make it digest fast so you can eat again 3 hours keeping your metabolism high.

Yea, it seems like you could ramp up the muscle-training stuff more. (I know I posted my lame thread about my weight recently, but I'm sayin this cuz I care and know stuff from when I worked out for a year straight after never working out in my life b4.)

Can't underestimate the muscle-training! Lunges, squats? BURN yr muscles. You will def see improvment.

Gyms have always been helpful to me cuz of availability of equipment, but you can do walking lunges, squats, lift books and other shit (*scene from Gummo comes to mind with the silverware lmao*)

But it's a true fact that women tend to overestimate the cardio and not do nearly enuf muscle training. Just keeping that in mind has helped me.

    I love hiking. So. Much.

    Good luck!

    Okay, another question.

I live in a van and I'm (obviously) not always in the same place and often not near a gym. Is there a routine I can do with free weights on my own without going to the gym to build muscle? I have a set of 10 lb weights, but I should have heavier ones too, right? Or should I just go to a gym and get a personal trainer to show me what to do, and then do that on my own?

Fats slow digestion but they do NOT slow metabolism. Less fat in a meal means that the GI rate is faster which is never good for weight loss (unless you want to lose muscle mass too or just age quicker).

Good fats are good for you and won't make you fat. They're good for balancing ut hormones and delaying againg too fyi.

Grab an Oxygen magazine when you can and follow their routines. Mimick form but be cautious with deadlifts. THey keep showing this chick with a rounded back.

I would grab 15s and 20s BUT I have no idea how strong you are in good form.

    I think you should get at least some 12's. I like the gym bc it has 10, 12, 15, 17.5 & 20.

I like the idea of getting a trainer/workout nut friend to show you the ropes on the machinery, that way you feel disciplined and "know what yr doing" and effective and not a dorkus malorkus.

I think if you join a Y, it's cheap and you can use any Y across the country. Same of course with chain gyms.

Plus my gym has a steam room which makes me feel so freakin healthy. (No it ain't no spa either, just lucky)

And leg weights were what really did it for me.

And by going there, I know "time to seriously WORK OUT." I can get lazy at home. But mostly it's the equiment they have.

But of course and by all means, you can achieve results not in a gym, using natural resistance.

shape magazine or fitness have some good weight workouts in them, and they normally have alternatives to the exercises so you can do them at home. you can also go the shape.com website and do a search.

sure, you can do it without a gym, especially if you're already used to a, um, non-traditional lifestyle. if you're relatively in-touch with your body and can feel the difference between good form and bad form, you only really need a good book or website to reference, and oxygen magazine and m&f hers are great resources. in fact, the current (october) issue of oxygen is one of the better ones i've seen in a while. pick up that and order the glute issues online. you could go to a trainer, but i've never tried one, and i do great on my own.

10 pound weights should be fine to start with. once something starts feeling easy, switch to as many one-leg moves as you can. when i do one-leg moves, i use about 20 pounds total, and it's plenty. get a foldable weight bench or find a sturdy park bench or anything sturdy of similar height to do step ups on. with how pricey gas is, don't bother driving around any extra weight until you need more.

to maximize fat loss, rest as little as you can between moves. i like to do step ups between other moves to keep my heartrate up and to fatigue my muscles faster. can you tell i love step ups? they really are awesome. unweighted step-ups are a great warmup too.

It is all just a big mathematical equation.

Say your basal metabolism is 1300... and you burn another 600 walking each day (which is roughly what you'd burn in 6 miles) - thats a daily expenditure of 1900. To lose ONE pound a week, you'd have to have a 500 calorie deficit each day; meaning you could intake 1400 calories a day.

    A pound of fat = 3500 calories.

If you wanted to lose two pounds of fat a week, you'd have to have a 1000 deficit each day - which would take you down to a very low caloric intake. Really, to do it healthfully, it takes time. But to be honest, I'm 5'4", 120 lbs, and for me to lose weight, I have to eat under 800 cals a day AND work out like a feign. And I know that's not healthy.

    Everyone is different.

So, I got one of those resistance bands, and I'm doing this workout - http://exercise.about.com/cs/exercis...istanceban.htm - but alternating days for the top and bottom of my body.

And... I've made a crazy discovery and lost ten pounds *and* an inch off my waist. Running, really really fast, for short bursts. Like, as fast as I physically can for about 2 minutes, twice a day. I don't get it, but it seems to work really really well.

I would have suggested that, but the likelihood of Lena walking into a doctor's office to give blood is so small as to be invisible.
