    Default Growing long hair

My hair seems like it's not growing at all. I only flat-iron it 3 times a week, only wash it 3 times a week... the other times I just let it air dry. I'm gentle on it , I don't use ponytail holders or an other damaging things. I take multivitamins, I try to get enough protein (i'm vegan)... it just feels like it gets to a certain length (right above my nipples) and then just STOPS. HOW CAN I MAKE IT GROW LONGER??? I want it down to my waist....I trim it every 4 months, I hate cutting it.

    It is this long:

Why every 4 months? I've heard to trim every 6 weeks. Then again I get alot of split ends that need to come off. Where is Mia M..she my fur guru on here.

6 weeks is for maintaining the length, correct? I read that to grow hair you should get half an inch off every 3-4 months.

Hair is dead once it grows out of your scalp. Every 6-8 weeks is sufficient to keep split ends from splitting higher.

Unless your hair is extremely damaged, you don't need to trim it. Even if it is, you don't need to trim every 6 months. If you did, it would take forever to grow out.

I say ditch the flat iron. Even 3 times a week can be damaging. Airy dry as much as possible and wear your hair UP. When it's down it tangles, rubs against things and all of this damages.

You may also want to try eliminating harsh sulphates and silicones from your products, which can be drying.

I have extremely curly hair... extremely..

How can I make it straight (or wavy even) without blow drying it/straightening it? Is there a way I can air dry it (braids DO NOT work for me) overnight so it won't look like I have an afro when I wake up?

The pictures are my curly hair naturally air-dried, and then my hair blow dried, flat ironed, curled and with extensions for work. I like curls, just not ones that start at the root and create crazy volume and don't even allow for a part!

Well, I think your natural hair air dried looks more wavy than curly. Curls are usually defined as spirals, whereas you have a definite S-shape that denotes waves.

I have curly/wavy hair and I clip mine into a bun when it's damp and when I let it out it's nice and smooth. That wouldn't work when you're sleeping though, so you may have to change when you wash your hair.

If it's curls at the root that bother you, I'd try combing your hair (never brush wet hair! so damaging) into a high ponytail so when it dries the roots will be flat and the rest wavy.

Gypsy I'm jealous of your hair. My hair keeps breaking in the front. That Aphogee stuff looks interesting.

I'd like to say you SHOULD get your hair trimmed every 6- 12 weeks depending on damage etc. I say this with 100% honesty . My bf use to do Hair ( quit to do what he does now ) and that is the suggested time line for trimming.

Not 6 months or whatever. Split ends happen and if you let them go too long they split up higher and you have to get more length taken off. it's better to manage it rather than go without managing and lopping off a ton of hair and basically having to start over.

Half the girls I dance with have waist long hair. Im in the process of growing mine out right now and they all have told me your hair just kinda stunts its growth when it gets about half way down your back or just a bit shorter. They all told me to be patient because it will start growing again.

I never ever heat style my hair, I don't do anything with it but let it air dry and I wash and condition my hair daily and its super healthy, hardly any split ends and I wear it up when im not at work. Its growing out fairly steady and not problems so far. So yea thats what works for me *shrug*

I havn't read the rest of this thread however he is what I did to get my hair to grow down to my butt from shoulder length in around 2.5 years:

Do not use any products on it unless you HAVE to do so. Do not over wash it. Yes, there is such a thing as over washing your hair. Wash it when you need to wash it, allow the natural oils to come out. Do not over brush it as well and if you do brush it (or comb it) go bottom to top.

Comb/Brush it from the ends/tips to the root of the hair on your head. This helps preventage breaking etc.

Get your head out in the sun for at least 15 min per day.

Allow your hair to dry naturally - try to steer clear of hair dryers.

Also, in that time I never cut my hair and yes I did wear it up most of the time. I only get it cut because I don't want it to grow longer than past my tailbone or to stay just above my butt for length.

Otherwise I have healthy, long split end free hair.

In a way, I do alot of nothing to my hair in order for me to have it grow long.

Yea I put my hair in a braid to dry it(usually because I have a noon show and I dont wake up on time to let my hair dry before going on stage lol). I brush my hair from bottom to top and don't do any styling really. I have super thick wavy hair that is fairly long now(just past half way down my back). I havn't had it cut in about a year now.

Honestly if I don't wash my hair daily it looks nasty because I sweat on stage and doing nightly shower shows it needs to be washed because its full of stage soap and icky sump pump water lol/

I know that's what salons recommend, but I belong to a huge online community of women dedicated to growing hair super long and they do not agree that this is necessary and their hair is really healthy. I've found this to be true from personal experience as well.

Also, salons are ultimately a business, so it makes sense that they'd recommend it, even if it's not necessary for many people.

Oh yeah, I know. But he probably was going on your generic hair dresser advice in which they are taught that because it is profitable, not necessarily because it's what every head of hair needs (how would one gauge that?). Not saying he was trying to scheme people out of their money, haha, but that would be in their basic training.

However, like GCG said and from what I've heard on my hair forum, you really do have to baby it, wear it up, avoid harsh things like lots of heat and so on. People that do those things probably do need a trim more often.

Usually damage and/or too frequent trims are the cause of inability to grow hair. If you have ruled out these, and you are sure you are not malnourished (which I had a problem with when I was a vegetarian), then you need to consider this may be your hairs max length. Everyone's hair has a different potential for maximum length. Have you had your hair longer in the past? If not that could be your problem.

You naturally shed a certain number of hairs every day, and new ones will take their place. There is a set number of years your hair will grow before it sheds. Everyone is different, and the rate of your hair growth times the number of years before natural shedding occurs will determine your potential hair length.

^You misunderstand me, I'm saying he WASN'T scamming people, nor do any stylists I'm sure...it's just part of their training, which can be flawed. I was trying to clarify what I said before about salons and their being a business, so you wouldn't think I was attacking him...but apparently that failed.

I was saying that yes, he coloured hair. But as part of his stylist training/working in a salon/knowing about professional haircare in general, he probably would have heard about the 6 week rule, (more than someone who had no connection to that world at all) which does not pertain to all people.

I swear by fish oil capsules. I also do NOT wash my hair every day...but rinse it to help the natural oils spread through my hair. It also helps to do a scalp massage.

My hair was cut to just below my shoulders in November...and now it's touching my waist (I have my hair trimmed every 5 weeks). I'm sure pregnancy has a bit to do with it, but my hair has always grown fast.

I was always told the the more often you have your hair trimmed, the more it stimulate growth. But, honestly...I think that if you're taking good care of your hair, and you check the ends often, you don't need to get trimmed so often. However, since you are flat-ironing your hair, chances are your ends are dry and breaking off...which may explain why it doesn't seem like it's growing more. I would suggest letting your hair air dry first...then quickly blow dry with a round natural bristle brush to get the waves out and then hitting with a flat iron. Blow drying your hair from a wet state is horrible for your hair.

^How does hair cut at the ends stimulate growth at the root?

Perhaps you retain more growth if it's really damaged as it doesn't break off at the ends due to being split/damaged, but I doubt that cutting the tips of hair, which is dead material, would affect the follicles on the scalp that grow hair in any way.

do you put the fish oil on your hair or take it orally? and i know this might sound stupid but was it fish oil that works as a laxative or was that flax seed? I'm pretty ignorant to this stuff.

I use olive oil on my hair every once in a blue moon. doesn't make it grow but it makes it super soft and managable.

^ Well, that's what I was told. If it's right or not, I don't know...all I know is that my hair grows fast. Is it from getting it trimmed every 5 weeks or from just having good genes for fast-growing hair...I don't know.

    Any other questions?
