    Default Van Halen/David Lee Roth

    There's a lot of talk rite now about the Van Halen/David Lee Roth reunion tour.I know they sold more albums with that......thing Sammy Hagar on vocals yet he was never ever able to get out from under David Lee's shadow.I have many theories on why but I am an ex-musican/singer who grew up idolizing Diamond Dave.So my personal opinions may be a little biased.I'm interested in hearing the average listener's thoughts on this........if anyone wants to share.What I mean by average is someone who didn't grow up idolizing David Lee and thinking Sammy Hagar was an utter disgrace to the music industry.

    They're selling tickets for a show in Boston, with DLR, and the Van halen crew, I forgt who, but Michael Anthony is out.

    Pretty much Ilook at it this way:

    DLR = late 70s/80s VH
    Hagar = 90s VH

    I actually think that if VH didn't switch lead singers that they would have died in the late 80s/early 90s with grunge coming in, it would have been taken over by them. However, since they had SH as their lead-sionger, their songs changed tones, etc and they were able to stay relebvant i he 90s. It was till 2K when they switch to "guy-I-can't-remember" that they became a joke.

    Ultimately they are #2 for tours this year, so I think its obviously being done for the $$$.

    I enjoyed both the Roth and Hagar eras of Van Halen...essentially to me they are two different bands. IMO, with David Lee Roth they were a hedonistic, stadium rock band. With Sammy Hagar they were more melodic, incorporated more instruments, and as with most hard rock bands in the late 80s and early 90s, leaned on the power ballad to try & stay radio-friendly.

    The VHIII album with Gary Cherone - well I only heard the two singles which I though were OK, but all in all it's more like the Rocky V of Van Halen history...it happened but hardcore fans don't acknowledge it.

    Both Dave and Eddie have said they're doing an new album after the tour.There's no doubt they were a diff band with Hagar,they became a pop teeny bopper band with no edge.Like I said I'm jaded b/c of my hatred of Hagar

    I loved Hagar in front of Montrose. Space Station #5 and Bad Motor Scooter are two of my all time favorite songs to be honest.

    I strongly dislike Hagar in front of Van Halen. I think I liked one single song out of that entire era; Runaround.

    I LOVED Dave's character as much as I loved his voice in front of Van Halen until I met him at work. Even worse than my opinion of him is our head floor guy who literally idolized him until that night. In Bob's 20+ years at the star-filled Cheetah Dave was the first person he got star-struck over. He now despises him.

    Honestly I've heard the rumor of them getting together so many times that now it's like the boy who cried wolf.

    No this one's real.The tickets have gone aon sale,there's all kinds of interviews with Dave and Eddie,Dave's personal website now redirects to VH's.BTW Michael Anthony was replaced on bass by Eddie's son Wolfgang.I believe there's going to be a new album only when Dave and Eddie are still talking after the tour.I've never met Dave and I don't want to.I know he's very arrogant and I'm sure it would destroy the image of my boyhood hero.It's funny you brought up Bad Motor Scooter b/c nothing personal but I make jokes about the name of that song all the time.I'll be the 1st to admit Sammy will never ever be able to do anything rite in my mind.
    I make jokes about every aspect of him from things like that song,to his redrocker nickname,to...everything

    Mind you those two songs are Sammy's only accomplishments I like, and Rock Candy (a little). I liked 3 Lock Box for a minute as a teen but not anymore. Don't ask me why but I love those two songs and really don't like Hagar's voice whatsoever.

    More importantly is the loss of Anthony. From what I understand his voice played a very significant role in the overall sound of VH.

    Van Halen with Roth was lightning in a bottle, Van Halen with Hagar was an empty bottle, and Van Halen with Cherone was a broken bottle.

    That is all.

    ^ Now that's funny.Yeah Michael Anthony did all the backup vocals but as a bass player to call him average would be an insult to the word average.What made the original VH was Dave's unique vocals, his party,it's all about sex and girls tude,Eddie's great and very orginal guitar and when it was put all together it exploded.Alex and Michael Anthony on the other hand are very below average musicians.What I find funny is why Michael Anthony's out.....and it has to do with Sammy.THen when Sammy came in it was suddenly all about Love.WTF is it with that pansy ass bitch and love? Why Can't this be Love,When Love Walks in,When it's love,WTF?That F'n p_ssy and his Bad Motor Scooter.Damn I hate him.They went so pop/commercial with that thing

    They've pretty much always been a pop-banded, as defined as "pop", except perhaps the 1st album

    Van Hagar sucks. And I actually liked Sammy before he joined/ruined the band.

    Van Halen with DLR as the front man=maybe the best rock band ever, IMO.

    Huh? Women and Children First was a pop album? Nah, the pop era VH started after 1984, much like Metallica turned their back on their roots after And Justice For All...

    I confess that I liked some of the VH from the Hagar era. Well that OU812 album kinda blew but nobody's perfect.

    Funny thing was, it was DLR's career that went south after the breakup. Usually its the other way around when that sort of thing happens.

    Dave was the man for Van Halen. Those early shows and albums were awesome. Sammy is great also though. That Montrose album is a hard rock classic and There's Only One Way To Rock Kills!

    I prefer the original VH, too. Hagar doesn't really bother me, though. It was a completely different band. Attitude-wise, I've met both Sammy and Dave. Sammy was pleasant and down-to-earth. Dave=total cockmaster. He had terrible hairplugs, too. I'm really not interested in going to the show, as I said in a previous thread. If I score some free tickets or something maybe.

    ETA: OH! WTF was that bluegrass VH thing Dave did? Cripes that was awful.

    Well I won't get into that Metalicca thing too much b/c I liked all their stuff b/f and after Black.Lars has said the Black album and beyond were the toughest the bands ever done musically b/c it wasn't just about how fast can they play anymore.
    I heard Henry Rolllins call Dave the best frontman ever.As much as I like Dave I like Led Zep a lot too and I think there could be a great debate b/w Dave and Robert Plant fo best frontman.I still if the albums with Sammy sold so well why could he never escape Dave's shadow.I know from my perspective but in general.IMO the best VH/Roth albums were Fair Warning and Women and Children First neither of which were pop.I'd love to know if they would have gone so commercial if Dave never left.As for his solo career him and his ego detroyed it.He had another great thing going with Steve Vai but his ego ruined it.IMO if it wasn't for his ego he could have been like Ozzy.

    ^^^^ Do not get me started on Zeplin, I used to like them until I found out they stole allot of their shit, the only thing different between some song where the lyrics even some were just a couple of words!

    I was going to avoid this thread like the plague because I've met dave and sammy and I think sammy is the better siner/human being by far. Dave was arrested for foolin around with a 13yr old girl when i met him, so....
    He could have been like Ozzy?!? No fucking way. Ozzy does things differently and dlr couldn't wipe Ozzy's ass. If you had said dlr could have beenwhats his name from great white, then i might have agreed.

    HAHA. True!

    Seriously, when Van Halen came out, at the time the band felt like a revolution. Van Halen Part Deux with Hagar just felt like a sad attempt to resurrect the dead. Nothing against Hagar, and there are a few songs of VH-2 that I like, but it just wasn't the same band.

    To me it's just a different kind of VH although I prefer DLR VH I don't dislike either version . Kind of like Ac/Dc I was a a huge Bon Scott fan and def liked them in their early days much more raw to me same with VH more raw in early days kinda sucked towards the end od the DLR era.
