    Default Babysitting help?!

As I wrote a few days ago in LO, Luke is leaving for OSUT (boot camp and AIT all in one) in a few weeks, and will be gone for 16-17 weeks.

Since the kiddo is in school, I have no problem with working still, but I will need someone to watch her for 2 or 3 days a week from 9pm till I gt home around 4am.

I want an in house sitter (someone to come over and watch her), that has to do no chores or anything. I will provide food as well as entertainment, and if needed a ride back and forth from their home to mine.

No cooking, cleaning or anything needed.

How much should I pay someone for something like this? What credentials should I ask for/look for?

Mind you it will only be for a few months, would someone still be willing to do it part time, and only for a few months?

that's a toughie given the times involved. i think you'll need to figure on paying 9PM to 6AM for the math involved. it's basically a sleepover if you can get a teenager to do it or putting your kid with a friend.

maybe you can look up a sitting service and do some interviews. at the very least that may show you what to expect along the lines of references.

i'd also look around at churches or schools for baby-sitting services. needless to say, be very thorough. good luck!

Make sure the baby sitter is cpr and first aid certified. If you have an infant, make sure the sitter knows infant cpr, it is different than for adults.

Make sure the sitter knows how to stay calm in emergencies, and have a list of all important phone numbers.
    Dr.
    Poison control
Emergency contact( if you don't answer, who else can she call?)
    police

She needs to know general what to do if the child swallowed poison. Sometimes, if you make them throw up, it can hurt them worse. At the very least, she should not take action until calling poison control and asking them what to do.

babysitting wages vary according to location. Around here the going rate for what you need is about $9 to $12 per hour. A person qualified for this wage should have their own car and be CPR and first aid certified, with at least 2 babysitting references for children around the same age as yours. For example, a sitter who has 5 references all for kids 10+ may not be the best person to watch your 6 month old.

Just a note: some people in your circumstance may feel that since the kid and or the sitter will be asleep for all/most of the time, then the pay should be drastically reduced. The sitter will not agree. You are paying her to be alert at your house and leave the comforts of her own home, regardless of what duties she has to perform. Similar to a stripper being paid the same price per song whether she is dancing or talking!

Just remember, you get what you pay for in this business too.

very good point! frankly, i think it would be a premium over "regular" babysitting wages.

for example, i pay my 3rd/night shift higher than my 1st/day shift. the night shift is a tough spot to fill around here. i would think the same applies to the babysitting.

^^ i'm glad you agree, snoop.

I used to be in the industry, and it was always aggravating to deal with this. The mom say "but you're probably just going to sleep anyways!"
and i'd be like, yeah, but not in my own more comfortable bed, with a boy, and not under the influence of whatever I want, and not where I could get bored and go out with my friends...

We got our current sitter on Craigslist, believe it or not. She's a daycare teacher in the daytime. We checked all her references, of course. She comes over on weekends from 3pm-3am. We went through 2 previous ones we just ended up not caring for. It's a tricky process, but it CAN be done. Do a search in your area, there are agencies around, too.
