    Default Hawaii in Nov

I'm researching my first trip the Hawaii. My needs for the week will be simple; in no particular order:

    Beach time/people watching
Bars (at the beach, in the hotel, walking distance to the hotel, in the pool)
    Eating
    Snorkling
    Spa (?)

At the moment I'm leaning toward Oahu based on what little I've read.

    Island and hotel recommendations welcome!

I'm headed to Hawaii October 1st for two weeks, my first trip! I'll be happy to give you a full report when I return. My friend that I'm going with has been several times (her mom has a house there) so she knows all the stuff to do. We'll be in Honolulu and on the Big Island.

Big Island is the most tourist friendly. The Hiltion Waikoloa is pretty nice and close to Kona. Only part of Oahu I know is north shore, and it aint so tourist friendly.

hey well it depends what kind of vacation u lookin for.

basically, oahu (honolulu, state capitol) is the more city-ish of all the islands. it has skyskrapers, tons of bars, clubs, etc. but it also has nice beaches, and lots of cool activities. so it can be the best of both worlds, but sometimes its hard to find somwhere with no people because its damn crowded~ but if u look beyond the "touristy" type crap, you can visit reaaaaall nice beaches. instaed of fucking crowded ones in front of the hotels with a buncha old people.

if u DO go to Oahu, plaese remeber - DONT SPEND YOUR WHOLE VACATION IN WAIKIKI! its a tourist trap! ull never get to see the real hawaii if u jus stay in waikiki. because everyone goes here to vacation, and they just hang out in waikiki the whole week....and waikiki is basically just a crowded district next to the waikiki beach..tons of hotels, tons of clubs, TONS of shopping, tons of touristy stores and fucking crowded as hell beaches. but i mean they have nice hotels in waikiki and its nice to stay there, but get out ! spend a day or two in waikiki, but go explore!

oh and for snorkleing, you can go to Hanuama Bay theres tons of fishies there! but its REAAAL CROWDED! there are other snorkleing places that are less crowded but less fish..like Ko Olina.

so i suggest u go out and explore the rest of the island, because there are so damn nice places.

but if yer lookin for a more nature, laidback, relaxing, sightseeing, laying on the beach vacation - i suggest any of the other islands, but kauai is my favorite because its soooo green and lush and waterfalls yay!

p.s - north shore on OAHU is totaly worth visiting. people here dont mind tourist too much, they just have a bad reputation because certian tourist are rude and pushy and act like they own the place, and dont treat the island with respect. so other than that, ull be fine

Very well put, exactly, Honolulu is just like any other major city but it happens to have Waikiki Beach.

I've been to Oahu, Maui (just last mth) and the Big Island. I don't really recommend the Big Island for 1st time visit. It just kind of reminded me of the desert, but with black volcano rocks everywhere.

Overall don't expect to spend all night partying as Hawaii has very strict alcohol laws and shuts down pretty early on the Outer Islands.

If you want a real people watching beach try Wakiki beach. I was there last Thanksgiving. Every night they had native dances next to the beach. There is a lot of really good Japanese food everywhere in that area. I recomend a hike up Diamond head mountain. It is about a one hour forty minute hike. Be sure to wear a good tennis shoe or light hiking boot.

Change o' plans. I'm traveling elsewhere in late Oct. However, HI is on my short list, particularly if a certain yoga instructor has gone native and has moved there.

Check the other thread. When I lived out here before I'd just fly to NYC when it got slow or the mood struck me. So that might be an option. Because the only thing that's holding me back is $$ concerns.

Yes, that is what's holding me back as well. That and the SC scene.

Yeah, that's what I was refering to by $$ concerns. But, like I said before I used to fly out to NYC when it was dead or I wanted to hang out with friends, shop, whatever. So there are ways to make it work. P
