How big a deal is this? I want to do something nice for my mom's husband, and my sister swears this car is the object of all his dreams.
I guess I just want to know if it's a big deal in the car world, or just a minor thing?

Are you talking about the RX-7, or the newer RX-8? Just clarifying.
Both have the rotary engine and that's what makes the RX-7 so notorious in the car world. To many, the rotary engine is still a mystery and we're still tinkering with it. It has the ability to rev very high without damaging the engine. Basically it's a "niche" vehicle. Anyone that wants an RX-7 or 8 should know how to take care of them; they require regular maintenance and babying, and can easily break if you aren't right on top of it's care. Very touchy. But it can be a great, fun car.
Here's some forums/sites that you can poke around on if you're curious:

I love the rx7!I had an '84 back in the day and it was just the coolest, most fun car. Handled waaaaay better than mom's '87 300zx.
The '93-'95 is my favorite body style...I'll have one one of these days.
eta: I guess the style I like is the 3rd generation. I didn't even know they were still making them in 2002 (found on wiki)
ps: 2nd generation was booty looking (imo)

Great car, but from what i heard they are "high maintenance".

taken from wiki:
"Because of the smoothness inherent in the Wankel rotary engine, little vibration or harshness was experienced at high rpm, so a buzzer was fitted to the tachometer to warn the driver when the 7000 rpm redline was approaching."

Lena, what model is he feenin for?

The old one. I guess he's already got four non functioning ones as parts cars for when he gets one that'll run. And there's one for sale... I hope I can get my sister to go in on it with me.

wow, lena, im so impressed that you want to (if i understood) buy him a car?? he must really rock! but for that, you do rock darlin.
Love it!
My dad had a 1990 Rx-7, and it needed a lot of upkeep/maintenance. He got rid of it for that reason. It was his dream car, but impractical, so he traded up to a different dream car.
ETA: my point being about the maintenance- not just a random story about my dad, lol
Feature costumes for sale!

...the only "out of the ordinary" upkeep/maintenance i remember on early 80's engines was the dreaded oil seal leak on the upper left front side of the block after many miles. One little "O" ring failure and the only way to fix it was to dismantle the entire engine.

^that's what I had, the old one. It shouldn't be expensive but hopefully it hasn't been raced and modified the fook out of!

I absolutely fell in love with the new one, but I still like the old ones too:p
My dad has an RX-8. Good car and all, but it does burn a little more oil as compared with most cars that are piston/cylinder designs. Not a big deal if you maintain the engine as you are suppose to.

I had a used RX- 7 as my 2nd car..It was cute, fun to drive..but, I didn't know crap about rotary engines so, I sold it to a guy who sounds exactly like your father.
They're great cars for someone who knows how to repair and maintain them ..
Your dad is going to be so happy when he see his new toy !
My new love...is me !

The Wankel engine is really, really cool. Rather than all the bouncing parts of the normal reciprocating engine, it just has two moving parts: The piston and crank. And it has three combustions per revolution, making it powerful, with really high potential for rpm's.
But it's not very green. Higher fuel consumption and more pollution. In those ways, it's more like a two-stroke engine, using ports and more numerous combustions. But it is so ingenious in its simplicity. Herr Wankel was very creative.

They are a big deal in the car world. The way the motor functions provides a different "power curve" than other kinds of motors, and the spinning rotors don't shake the motor loose. Because of the valve design, and how the rotors work, it is designed to burn part of the oil it uses for lubrication, so the emissions are a little worse and it burns more oil than a new piston-based motor. The Renesis engine designed for the RX-8 is much better than the old version in the RX-7's, except that the RX-7 motors are a bit more solid.
The older RX-7's have their own racing series, a good following with parts and modification parts, and enough loyalists to keep the mechanics current and not too difficult to find.
They have their own kind of maintenance issues, with oil seal leaks and such, so it's best to look up that sort of expected maintenance and failures schedule information, so you can learn the expenses of ownership before someone buys one.
