    Default GOP: Gay, Outed Politician?

    Hey, it's 2007, Senator Craig!

Just admit that you like trouser snake. Focus group studies have established that millions of women--and men--in the United States feel the same way about it as you do...

BOISE, Idaho - A defiant Sen. Larry Craig denied any wrongdoing Tuesday despite his guilty plea this summer in a men's room police sting, emphatically adding, "I am not gay. I have never been gay."

Idaho’s Larry Craig on the issues:

    * Voted NO on adding sexual orientation to definition of hate crimes. (Jun 2002)
    * Voted NO on expanding hate crimes to include sexual orientation. (Jun 2000)
    * Voted YES on prohibiting same-sex marriage. (Sep 1996)
    * Voted NO on prohibiting job discrimination by sexual orientation. (Sep 1996)

My favorite part of this story:
"I've been in this business 27 years in the public eye here. I don't go around anywhere hitting on men, and by God, if I did, I wouldn't do it in Boise, Idaho! Jiminy!"

This guy spends a lot of time cruising men's rooms.

A 40-year-old professional man with close ties to Republican officials told the Idaho Statesman he had oral sex with Sen. Larry Craig at Washington's Union Station, probably in 2004.

The man spoke to the Statesman on the condition he not be named. He said he was sure it was Craig he had oral sex with but said he had no evidence other than his word.

Craig denied the allegations, and said, "I am not gay and I have never been in a restroom in Union Station having sex with anybody."

My gay friend told me about this 'signal' for getting sex in a bathroom and I thought he was full of shit.

He was like 'You just wiggle your feet 3 times and if the guy in the next stall does that too...'

    I guess it was true.

Am I the only person who is like "He was guilty of tapping his feet in the bathroom stall and placing his bag at the front of the stall?" I mean - it seems pretty weak to me.

well, is he guilty of a crime? Eh. Hard to say.

But is he a Republican, self-hating, closet homo? Yep! And that's what gets Americans excited.

The Republicans do not have a monopoly on hypocrisy. Barney Frank; Gerry Studds ; Jim Wright; Tom Foley; Dan Rostenkowski; TED KENNEDY ; Clinton etc.etc.
However, while the Dems find it politically expedient to cater to gays the Republicans generally prefer the "family values" route and thus when a hater like Craig is exposed as a self-hating gay man the irony is just too delicious.

For me to "tap" onto a guys foot on the next stall takes a conscious effort. Plus he looked into the stall first and made eye contact with the cop before entering the stall. If some guy was tapping my foot while i was in a stall, I would be creeped out and I would have an idea what he wanted. Then he make a hand gesture of some sort under the stall. ( He claims he has a wide stance!!! lol!!!) The cops knew what he was trying to do - he plead guilty.

I mean I dont care if he solicits guys for sex in bathrooms - it just the hypocrisy that gets my goat.

Oh and Eric lets not forget Marion Barry ... My fave politician. BUT Eirc those Dems dont run on family values. Thats why the republicans looks so bad. Other than that - a politician taking money or having sex with pages is - dare i say it - old hat. The thing thats makes the story when Vitter, Craig, Haggert or these other christian conservatives is their self righteousness and supposedly superior morality. Their refusal to recognize homosexuality as a naturally occurrence rather than a "choice". Right?

I will never understand how the hell this is a crime for my life.
    From the police report:
"At 1216 hours, Craig tapped his right foot. I recognized this as a signal used by persons wishing to engage in lewd conduct. Craig tapped his toes several times and moves his foot closer to my foot.... The presence of others did not seem to deter Craig as he moved his right foot so that it touched the side of my left foot which was within my stall area. Craig then proceeded to swipe his hand under the stall divider several times."

It's really great that our law enforcement people are spending their time getting the hand swipers off the streets. I mean, fuck violent crime, as long as the gay people are locked up, who cares if our children get shot?

Lap - the guy walked by a bathroom stall, placed his bag down and shuffled his feet. The rest of it is a matter of characterization - like was it a meaningful look, or a absent glance? Was he just looking to see if there was someone in there so that he could pass wind without embarrassment? Saying that "you know what they'd be after" is a far cry from proving that he has committed a crime.

Emily I do see your point. And it does seem like pleading guilty to a charge like that shows a guilty/paranoid/closeted conscience after all.

^^^ I see your point but I guess they make it a crime so guys wont have sex in public restrooms. REad the officer's report. Its like in strip bars that have a 3 foot rule.

Plus he plead guilty.. He is a US senator - not some dummy from the hill country. Why plead?? This is sooo strange on so many levels.

First of all, I DO care that he cruises bathrooms. It's disgusting and completely inappropriate.
Some Dems DO run on "family values" when they find it to be politically expedient. For instance, plenty of the current Dem cadidates for President oppose Gay Marriage and they drag out their religious beliefs and wave them around to court votes.
Personally, I prefer my "politics" to be asexual and irreligious and prefer that elected officials focus solely on secular issues. Period. Unfortunately , it rarely works that way in the USA.
Craig is a dirty old creepy queen who doesn't have the guts to admit he's gay. He'll probably end up going to the same silly "rehab" center that Haggard did.
You're also correct that too many Republicans line up with the Christers and support ignorance over fact. Three current Republican candidates said that they do not believe in Evolution. Likewise many try to push the disproven nonsense that homosexuality is a "choice" even though EVERY reputable study has shown it to be genetic and that you can't be "converted".
The Republicans are in for a rude awakening next year UNLESS they get out of Iraq AND focus on economics instead of these stupid "wedge" issues.

^^^ U da man... I agree. That evolution "debate" creeps me out. Huckabee is almost I guy i could like but to not believe in evolution - well faith is one thing, but to ignore science in support of one's faith is disturbing. I mean he doesnt believe the earth is at the center of the universe. WEll maybe he does.

And u r right about the DEms and their fear of Gay marriage. If gays want to marry and throw away their lives like us heteros do ( uh thats a joke btw ) then let them. The reason they dont is simple. To give gays marriages rights or civil unions is to say that being homosexual is OK. ANd people, left or right have a hard time with that. The whole marriage debate makes my brain hurt it is so banal. Im getting a headache just writing this !!!

Update: Another conservative Republican moralist (and flaming (!) sexual hypocrite) to bite--or is that "suck"-- the dust:

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Embattled Republican Sen. Larry Craig will announce his resignation from the Senate Saturday, a GOP source in Idaho said Friday.

Craig will leave office on September 30, the source said.

    Seattle Times: Resign, Sen. Craig

In an , the Seattle Times urged Sen. Larry “Wide Stance” Craig (R-Idablow) to resign. The Seattle Times has a pretty sterling reputation when it comes to gay issues—rabidly and reliably pro-gay marriage, for starters—and the paper goes out of its way to let readers know that their call for Craig’s resignation has nothing to do with the senator’s gayness or not-gayness.
Craig is not guilty of being gay. Or of being deceitful or in denial about his sexuality. The senator had a choice, and decided to put the dignity and privilege of his high office at risk in the pursuit of sex in a very public setting. The official charge is misdemeanor disorderly conduct, but he is truly guilty of felonious stupidity and arrogance….
Human frailties are magnified in the harsh light of a life served in front of and on behalf of the public. Second chances are extended, but there are limits. The surreal notion of a U.S. senator trolling for sexual gratification in an airport restroom crosses that boundary.
So for the Seattle Times the issue seems to be location, location, location. If Sen. Craig—a “family values” crusader, a foe of same-sex marriage, a supporter of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”—was caught having gay sex in a hotel room… then it would’ve been alright, despite the hypocrisy? It wasn’t the sex, but where he was trolling for sex?

And what of Louisiana’s David Vitter? Or “Vitter the Shitter,” as this tarnished “family values” crusader is known among professional sex workers in New Orleans. Vitter admitted to sexual “sin,” or hiring hookers, and claims that his wife and God have forgiven him. And so have his colleagues in the GOP—the same folks that are demanding Craig step down gave Vitter a pass. Craig’s conduct is “unforgivable,” says Sen. Mitch McConnell. The Seattle Times would seem to agree to with McConnell—and unless there’s an editorial coming soon calling for Vitter to resign, then the Seattle Times call for Craig’s resignation would seem to have everything to do with his gayness.

Unless the Seattle Times thinks that paying a hooker to put you in diapers is somehow more dignified than trolling for sex in an airport toilet.

^^^ Well, personally, I would agree, paying a hooker to put you in diapers is more dignified than trolling for sex in an airport toilet.

And the undeniable fact is, that he was not arrested, and he did not plead guilty to being gay.

He was arrested, and pled guilty to, trolling for sex in an airport toilet.

Actually, he may even be telling the truth when he says he's not gay. Perhaps, if he had the choice of cruising the ladies room for anonymous sex, he would have taken it...
