Post "Geek Squad" computer gurus of SW, please shed some light on me.

Whats up guys, i dont know about you but im one of the few people who are computer challenged, in all aspects. For example, i dont even know how to open a new window, post an image in someone's myspace comment box, and so fourth. Can the "enlightened ones" teach me a thing or two? Here are my inquiries:

    1. How do i post an image/picture in someone's myspace comment box?

    2. How do i open a new window, im on Stripper Web now....so what i do from here to open a new window?

    3. Whats phished/phishers mean? Is it like when someone/something hacks your computer or something?

    4. I have Windows Live Hotmail, how come when i send a message to someone's email and i go to my sent section, i dont see the email i sent?

    5. What is Ad-aware? I have it on my computer but and "run" it once in a while, i heard it was good for the computer. Like does it "clean" the computer or something?

    6. What is CCleaner? I also have it on my computer and i assume its to clean out porn etc history?

    7. What exactly are cookies?

    8. Is the hard drive the part of the computer that stores everything?

    9. If im using Microsoft word to write an essay/document etc, if my computer shuts down or the power goes out do i lose whatever i was working on? What can i do in this situation?

    10. Following question "9", how come every once in a long while my comp screen will go black and say "Power enabling monitor will shut down" or something like that. Im always like wtf just happened.

    11. How come sometimes after i turn off my computer, when i turn it on the next morning or whatever the screen comes up but its "frozen"....then i have to turn it off again by holding the power button and when i start it up again, its fine. Is this bad for the computer?

    12. What do people mean when they say they are "downloading porn", does that mean they are saving it to their hard drive?

    13. Say im using one of the computers at my college, typing up an essay, how do i save it? To a disk or send it to myself.

I cant believe i suck this bad with computers ....lol but id rather ask and be enlightened than never be in the know, your guys input is greatly appreciated. I wish someone could come to my house and just spend some time to teach me about the general usage of computers and what not.

But seriously, you'd have to know something about the HTTP protocol, and what an HTTP server and client is to really understand the answer. To a great degree you really don't need to know, but I suppose it's okay to say that they are used to store some info between your computer and a website. For example, if you have ever bought anything online, chances are a cookie was used to keep track of what you purchased.

    3) A phish is usually an email that mite say - Citibank needs to update your account info.. They then have a link to a site that looks just like Citibank and asks you for your account info.. Or they may ask u to respond to the email with your account info.... Real banks NEVER do this. They they get your account info and well u can figure the rest.

They may claim to be a bank, cc or other financial institution.

    1. How do i post an image/picture in someone's myspace comment box?
don't know about myspace but here or in other forums you typically host your picture on a website like imageshack.com, flickr.com or something else and link to it. <img>http://imageshack.com/mypicture.jpg</img> or something similar

    2. How do i open a new window, im on Stripper Web now....so what i do from here to open a new window?

    to detect spyware.

    6. What is CCleaner? I also have it on my computer and i assume its to clean out porn etc history?

    7. What exactly are cookies?
stores info on your computer so websites can remember you.

    8. Is the hard drive the part of the computer that stores everything?
    yes

    9. If im using Microsoft word to write an essay/document etc, if my computer shuts down or the power goes out do i lose whatever i was working on? What can i do in this situation?
save to hard disk and it will still be there

    10. Following question "9", how come every once in a long while my comp screen will go black and say "Power enabling monitor will shut down" or something like that. Im always like wtf just happened.

screen saver or monitor shut off to save power. You didn't use the keybboard or mouse in a while.

    11. How come sometimes after i turn off my computer, when i turn it on the next morning or whatever the screen comes up but its "frozen"....then i have to turn it off again by holding the power button and when i start it up again, its fine. Is this bad for the computer?
    i don't know.

    12. What do people mean when they say they are "downloading porn", does that mean they are saving it to their hard drive?
    yes, or perhaps just watching.

    13. Say im using one of the computers at my college, typing up an essay, how do i save it? To a disk or send it to myself.

    yes

the "file-->new" opens a blank or a homepage window (depending on your settings). To get one of the forums or posts to open in another window, use the menu from when you put the cursor over the link for that page and press the right mouse button. Usually you get "open in another tab" or "open in another page"

phish is to use some otherwise innocuous image or web page to convince you to provide infromation to someone under false pretenses. You can get a better definition from wikipedia.

you either change your settings globally or check the box at the bottom of the "compose new mail" page to "save as sent" or something of that sort.

It's a program that helps find and remove spyware from a computer. It is best used in conjunction with Spybot Search & Destroy and a separate anti-virus program.

it removes "history" date from your internet settings, so that people can't tell what pages you've been looking at without using expensive recovery programs. Just keep in mind that the police and the FBI write those sorts of programs themselves, so don't think it will wipe out the history of some criminal activity to where they can't find it.

Information files that a website tells your computer to write so that it doesn't have to keep track of the information back at the website's host computer. If you change your setiings on how Stripperweb appears, you will have a cookie on your computer with the settings. I'm pretty sure that SW keeps a cookie on the host computer, too, in case you log in fom someone else's, too.

Usually. There are other storage methods, too, but for most people, hard drives are what they use.

There's a file that Word creates as its 'display' copy. If you screw up your computer so badly that you can't get word to run, you can usually find that work copy sitting next to the original and can send it to another computer to open it in that computer's word processor. Depending on when it updated, you may get part of your original work, all of it, or frustratingly little.

    Oh, and Word sucks, too.

You let it sit so long that the comoputer is trying to keep you from cooking a static image onto the inside surface of the glass. Often, people use screensavers, but the power settings can also tell the computer to put the monitor to sleep, so it won't use as much electricity.

Give the computer some more time to reset when you wake it up. usually, it means that the hard drive was spun down, and even though the computer remembers what to display, it's still waiting for the hard drive to give it the instructions on how to change things. Move the mouse, wait about twenty seconds, wait for the screen to go black and restore, and then see whether it works.

also, if your computer's ventilation system doesn't work well, heat can cause the computer to close down parts of the main chip, which won't allow it to do some things until everything cools down a bit.

That sort of restarting messes up some files and can get the computer to lose track of parts of some files. It's usually not a good thing, and you ought to make sure you figure out how to get the computer to check the hard drive's file integrity.

Sometimes, it is only temporarily brought onto the computer. The zeros and ones in a temporary file can still be recovered, but the operating system is designed to have some files occupy some space, and then be disregarded later.

It depends on the computer and the disc. It's hard to find people who use floppies any more, but they're still there. Usually, the "save" command is in the menu under "file" at the top left of the screen. "Save as" will let you browse through the different drives and directories where you can save stuff.

I asked my friend who is an expert on Windows to respond to your questions 10 and 11. Here's what she said:

how come every once in a long while my comp screen will go black and say "Power enabling monitor will shut down" or something like that

Power saver settings are set to 'power down' the monitor/computer after a set time with no activity. These settings are usually found in the control panel under power options, but some monitors have their own power saver settings run through the monitor drivers.

How come sometimes after i turn off my computer, when i turn it on the next morning or whatever the screen comes up but its "frozen"....then i have to turn it off again by holding the power button and when i start it up again, its fine. Is this bad for the computer?
Possibility 1-- Some older Windows computers (95 and earlier) will hang on shut down if they are running newer software. Shut down processes terminate all drivers and older OS don't always shut down all the newer drivers.
Possibility 2-- The user is not shutting down properly and the system cannot log all programs off, ie. they are not using the shut down command or the power button, but simply turning everything off using the surge protector/power bar button. Shutting down in this way is not good for your system
Possibility 3-- One of the programs is damaged and preventing the system from shutting down properly-- this can be caused by damage to a virus program, a hardware driver, or a network driver. In Win XP, using System Restore to go back to a time before this problem began can usually resolve the problem. Alternatively, uninstalling the last program or device before the problem began and then reinstalling, may resolve the problem.

Thanks guys, what i meant was when im on the comp doing something (every once one a blue moon) the computer will shut down saying "Power enabling monitor will shut down" I know there wasn't any inactivity because it shuts down while im surfing a forum, checking email, etc. Its not the screen saver thing. Also maximvsv, you mention Microsoft Word sucks, how so? Do you use another program? Also how come when use Mozzilla firefox some my friends myspace pages appear blank but when i use internet explorer, i can finally see the text/pics on their myspace?

Power enabling monitor will shut down
I got this from a techie board... The monitor message will be from the monitor itself, this is common in some monitors and should not be the focus of your investigation.

Im not sure this helps but what the guys is saying is your PC has another issue. And the moniter itself is displaying this message - ie its is not coming from windows. Could be a failing hard dive, bad memory, overheating etc etc....

Here's one thing I found, to start:

    Article: vtkb2630.htm
    Difficulty: Easy
    Time to Complete (minutes): 5
    Last Updated: Oct 13, 2006

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Question:

How do I turn on or off the power saving feature in Windows XP?

    Answer:

    Right-click your desktop.
    Select Properties link.
    Select the Screen Saver tab.
    Click the Power button.
    Select the Power Schemes tab.
Turn the power saving feature on or off.
To turn the power saving feature on: From the Turn Off Monitor drop-down list, select a time after which you want the monitor to go into power-saving mode.
To turn the power saving feature off: From the Turn Off Monitor drop-down list, select Never.
    Click OK.
In the Display Properties window, click OK.

Okay. MSWord. Word uses a layout-based model to arrange things on a page, so if you have one line of text where you want to have some of the words against the left margin and some words against the right margin, you end up having to make text boxes or defining columns. If you use your tab key to properly indent paragraphs, and you cut and paste paragraphs from one place inside the document to another, getting the paragraphs to actually tab the same can takee effort, because the program uses its own auotmatic layout features to supercede your placement decisions.

I use WordPerfect, and it is so much simpler to use. I still have to switch some automatic features off, like the program trying to make copyright symbols when I'm trying to type a (c) in a lst, but even getting to these features and switching them off is easier. It is easy to place custom-thickness lines anywhere on the page that I want. I can integrate pictures with no difficulty. It's just an easier program for me to use. I generate letterhead and business cards with it, with no difficulty.

The Firefox/IExplorer debate has gone on since Microsoft first came out with Explorer. The short version is that both programs use a different method to handle XHTML code. For instance, with IE, one of the profile avatars in my MySpace "top 12" gets moved/displaced whener I am viewing in IE, and it is lined up perfectly with the rest of the avatars when I use FireFox. The accepted explanation is that Microsoft changes the kinds of codes that fall into the XHTML language so that it doesn't display properly.

I saw that, too. I ran across other references, as well. For instance, if the message happens when the monitor is still displaying the desktop, then it is related to the CPU in some way, but if the sceen is already dark and the message is in a clunky text box, then it is just being generated by the monitor.

Correct-a-mundo. Most monitors these days will display a message of their own when there is no video signal. As for why his computer is shutting down for no apparent reason, the most likely possibilities are:

o The CPU is overheating and the BIOS has been set to shutdown the system when the CPU reaches a certain temp.

o Possibly the motherboard or graphics card are overheating, and he is running some tool (or again the BIOS may have an option) to shut the system down to protect it from damage.

o The Power Supply is failing, or is running nearly at 100% capacity, and turning itself off to protect itself from damage.

    ohh...I have a question.

When you post a link to another website, sometimes (smarter people) will say Click here, and you can click on the here part and go to the other website.
    How do you do that?

    Kaylinn,
Rather than pasting in the URL (that's the website address) into your message, go into advanced mode (click the "Go Advanced" button). There is a button for insert link. Click it, and give the pop-up dialog box the URL. It will paste some code into your message that includes the URL, and then in between brackets, the link that people will see. It defaults to the URL, but you may edit it to "here" or whatever else you like. You can even trick people:

When you post a link to another website, sometimes (smarter people) will say Click here, and you can click on the here part and go to the other website.
    How do you do that?
I thinkI figured it out type whatever you want.

    ie

then with the cursor place it over the word, like you gonna copy and pasted:
up top there is what looke like a smallglobe with a linked chain in front of it. Click on that and type the link.

Tell me if this is right peoples

Not if they have the status bar turned on. Anyone who does not use this feature is living recklessly.

This might be called by another name with other browsers. It is a feature that shows the URL of whatever link your cursor is touching.

As to the why does this browser show this type of content and that browser doesn't, well...

Each browser is at a certain degree of development. Some update themselves regularly, others update when you do it manually, others never update. So, if you see a blank, try a different browser. There is one certain type of webreport I receive for a web site I administer, and it sends a java applet to display a graph. The only browser I have that will display this content is Mozilla, which is not even supported or updated any more. Go figure.

On cookies: I am not a trusting soul, and I delete my cookies, cache, and history at the end of every session. Supposedly, only the web site that set the cookie on your computer can read it, but I don't believe it. What one person designs, another can crack. So, I delete them all every session, except...

My bank requires cookies to log in, and if I delete my cookies, I have to register again every time I log in to the bank, so what I have done is set up one particular browser that I use ONLY to log into online banking. I leave the cookies alone, but I never go to any web site except my banks with that browser.
