    Default All Tanners, pls read

First I should say. I've been a tanner for years, so I'm not a hater.
    BUT.........

My neighbor just had her 6th melanoma removed. This was on her forhead. The worst was a couple of years ago, they had to remove the side of her nose and take cartilage from her ear to try and fix it. I didn't know this was what happened until recently. She used to love to tan, and they said that is what has caused this.

I'm never tanning again. This will be hard, since I love the beach, but actually seeing someone who had part of there face removed is super scary.

I was also a tanner for year, so not a hater at all. I'll say right up front that I look like shit without a tan (I truly do) and fake tans looks even worse on me. I would love nothing more than to be bronzy and beautiful.

But I refuse to tan. It's not fucking worth it. And this is going to sound so awful, but I'm more concerned about how I'll look in 20 years than anything.

That's why I posted this. I wasn't sure death would be a good deterent (it wasn't for me). But I was pretty sure disfigurement would be.

That's so scary! My mom used to encourage my brother and me to go out in the sun, because we were so pale, and now she is covered in big, horrible moles. All of which she is having to have removed in case they are cancer. My aunt and grandmother have had to do the same. It's so scary. I know people love to do stuff that's bad for them, but messing up my face just scares me.

^^ So sorry. The next time my next door neighbor has a piece of her face removed, I'll try to make sure there isn't already a similar thread before I post.

As I've already said. I've been a tanner for years. The only time I didn't tan was while pregnant. Just thought this was really scary, probably because it happen to someone I see and talk to nearly every day.

^^no offense but after the last thread went on and on for pages like we dont know the dangers already..having ANOTHER tanning is evil thread pop right up was irritating.

And many of us HAVE seen that. Like I said in the other thread...my mother had to have it cut out of her face and she never tanned. Like everything else that may be unhealthy...you weigh the pros and cons and make a decision. And once that decision is made...having people tell you that your decision will kill you over and over is kind of annoying.

And yes..this is exactly why there is a search option. So we dont have multiple threads going on at the same time.

I apologize for being rude. I posted this because it is someone I know well and care about. I know I don't usually whine about personal problems on here, but many do and they never get reprimanded, even though they don't do a search and post in an already existing thread.

This is more of a personal issue with me. I've lost many people in my life to cancer, and it just seems like everyone I know gets the shit. I feel like I am the Black Death, bringing the stuff to everyone around me.

My 3 yr old plays in her back yard, she gives me tomatos from her garden, we have chats nearly every evening. This is not a stranger.

Anyway I know I'm babbling. I just thought it was rude to act as if I have no right to post this. It wasn't some nameless, faceless person on TV, or some fact filled lecture. This is something I just found out about and am dealing with right now. And yes, after getting this scared myself, I hope no one else has to go through this. Just writing this makes me cry, and all shaky.

Now my english has went to shit.....................

This is only the 2nd. And people are concerned, so no, I don't believe they'll stop anytime soon.

    ETA:

I knew what this thread was going to be before I even read it. I'm sure many will too. SO please, let's not make Jasmine feel bad; she's only concerned because she loves y'all. You should be flattered and happy that someone cares so much.

And as always, if we don't like what's being posted, we can always choose to ignore

now, i'm not picking on you or telling you we can do whatever we want or whatever else.. im just saying that we kinda dont care. its nice for people to be concerned, but it isnt like we're going to read these things and think "oh OK now i won't go tanning anymore!" we all have heard the stories or seen them firsthand (cameron and me both posted about our moms) so these threads arent going to be the magical thing that changes our minds.

Maybe if you read what I added, I will make more sense Britt I realized I just finished editing, so you might have missed the ETA.

    Yeah, I know.

For me, it's really scary thinking about any of that bad stuff as a result happening to any of you SW girlies, because I've been around you guys for years.

I titled my post like this because as a lifelong tanner, I am scared to death right now. I used to tan with the umlimited packages, everyday for the summers and several days a week all year long. I don't have a lot of obvious damage now, but I am terrified. My stomach is churning and I am ready to cry. I always thought I would get lasered, maybe a deep peel and a facelift, and voila. It wouldn't matter, I could remain tan and beautiful forever.

I just didn't want anyone else to ever have to feel this way. Also Britt, it makes me tear up just to hear that this will affect no one but me. And you are right, it won't, nothing got through to me before.

I saw my aunt die from cancer it is not pretty. She had surgery to remove it, but it was an incredibly rare form that grows really fast. The incision opened up before it could heal. She looked like she was carrying twins within 3 wks of being diagnosed. My mom took care of her while she died. Packing the incision with gauze soaked in saline, changing her colostomy bag, dealing with the halucinations and fear. I just don't want to die like this. And yeah, get mad if you want, but I don't ever want to read that someone else I know, even through an online forum, died in this way.

I've always known tanning could cause cancer, but it never seemed real. (Yes, I realize how dumb this sounds.)

I guess I just started this thread because I had to have a way to vent my panic before I really lose it.

I don't know why this is bothereing my so bad, but I am seriously freaked. I think I'm gonna sign off and see if I can calm down a litt,le, because I know I am rambling now.

Alot of this has to do with genetics and the natural tone of your skin. If you expose your skin way way way too much and you burn easier, you are at a higher risk for skin cancer. But tanning once or twice a week is not guaranteed cancer. Sure, exposure to rays are associated to skin cancer, but you have to look at all the factors.

well....here's one piece of lucky.....I think a lot of our tanners are pretty concerned with their looks....so I'm willing to wager that they see dermatologists from time to time....so if they are victims of cancer, they've got a good chance of it getting detected early. I would imagine that Cameron and Britt are hyper-aware of their skin and what to look for, as they've got it in their families as well. So for doing something inherently dangerous, they're doing it the best way possible.

I wish I could tan....not gonna happen.....too little melanin....I just turn really red, and fade back to white, never a tan to be seen. I look terrible with fake tanners too....so I guess I just have to look like a vampire or a ghost...ahh well.

    You're right Kitsune.

I know if I was as active outdoors as I was when i first moved to AZ when I was 10, I'd be naturally brown from all the sun. Mom slathered SPF on me, and I hardly ever burned, just tanned usually. Ah, those were the days when I was carefree. I've learned to accept that if safety is more important to me, I will embrace my pale tail.
