Default need advice on trading my car

I still owe about $5000 on my Galant, which i bought in February of this year. Its a 2000,plenty of miles....I did put new tires and new battery in.I want to upgrade sometime next month..the place i went to was a place that builds up credit,. Ive been good on my payments except for one month when I got set back. I was wondering how do I trade a car I still owe money on?
Im not doing it simply because I want a nicer car. (Ok, I DO want an Altima or Honda accord.) But this one is just so small and I cant even put zaias car seat behind the front seats, too little space.Just want something new and I deserve it and not sure how to go about it.
    Thanks ya'll ......

Go on KBB.com (kelly blue book) and find the trade in value of your car. If its worth more than $5000 the dealership will still take it as a trade in and you can finance a newer car.

I would make sure to mention it early on to your salesperson so its not a surprise to them later on. But they can definitely do it.

you should go to carmax and see what they say. the people at the dealership asked what carmax said because they would at least match that. and there was only 2 or 300 left after that and i said the only way i would buy is if they paid it off. my jetta was a 2002 with $7800 left on it. most wont lose a sale if you say thats the deciding factor.

KBB says my car is 6,945 if its in excellent condition. Mine needs a lil body work on the back bumper some idiot at the club hit i guess... and needs brakes. But i think its worth more than what I owe. Ill check out carmax... OOOOH a Jetta sounds nnice too...

You could also consider trying to sell your car first and then taking whatever money you have left over and putting that as a down payment on your new car. You'll get more from a private party than as a trade.

I'm not sure how much your payments are now, but, if you trade-in, bascailly your financing your current car's payments into your new monthly payments.

As long as you have equity in the vehicle you should be all set, paid more than 1/2 of what is owed on the note.

Also, call your finance company and ask for a "10 day payoff" to see how much is actually due vs how much you'll get for the trade in..
