    Default candles and cats

i loooooove burning candles. i have so many of them that i cant keep them all out because i dont have places for them. i buy yankee candles for the season.. pumpkin-y ones for fall, christmas ones for winter, stuff like that haha.. but i just got my cats recently. jasper wasnt a problem in the spring when i got him because he was such a scaredy. but now they run and knock into things and climb on things.. so where does this leave me with my candles? any suggestions on how i can burn my candles safely without my cats a) burning down myapartment or b) burning themselves?

They won't burn themselves--not more than once, anyway, and I really doubt even then. They have a deep-seated instinctive aversion to fire, like most animals.

As far as them running around and knocking stuff over, aren't there those big ceramic candle-holding things that are big and thick and heavy? Like they make some with translucent walls so the candles burning shows through. I've seen some of them that looked pretty cat-proof.

I never had a problem with any of my cats, though from the sounds of it you burn more candles than I did or the various SOs I had living with me did, around the kitties.

I have 2 furry hellions and I burn candles all the time. I dont burn them when I am not there to watch(I know...kind of common sense not to leave candles burning when you arent there..but I've heard of A LOT of people who do)..so if they do knock something over, I'll catch it right away.
I put the candle somewhere they arent likely to go..on the stove(between burners),on a higher shelf, top of the TV, etc..etc...

And mine do tend to steer clear. I've never had a problem.

You don't want their tails sparking up so I'd put them in areas where the cats (hopefully) don't walk or play such as dining tables, kitchen and bathroom counters. That is what I do anyway.

Putting them in different areas helps alot. My cat wanted to meet a candle once. He put his young paw over the flame quickly and burnt himself a tad. Not enough to cause blistering but a bad memory that playing with fire is bad. He hasn't messed with a candle since. Or try a heavy base candle holder so they are less likely to knock them over.

Yeah...I just put them in places where she doesn't go or jump on. I was scared about this at first, too...but my kitty is pretty witty. (Okay..I know that last line was retarded, sorry).

I had a jack russel that would literally sit, face pressed against glass, and watch a candle like it was telling him the universe's secrets.

He would come away and play, but if we left him, we'd come home, look in the window, and a lot of the times, see him just looking at the candle.

    Yep, CK!

My sister lost a cool loft in the Haight-Asbury District of San Francisco that way several years ago. Her absent neighbor's playful cat knocked over a lit candle (according to the Fire Dept) and it burnt down their entire building. My sister's cat escaped and so did the neighbor's, but the neighbor's cat was singed and pretty "shell shocked"...

The nitty gritty is that kitty's pretty witty?
