    Sad ringworm help needed please.

i thought i had a bad case of eczema but it seems not! the doctor tells me i have ringworm.
i freaked out for a bit until she told me it's not an actual worm (phew!)
funny thing is i have NO idea where i could have got it from. weird. no pets or anything like that

so i have an anti fungal cream i got on prescription but have read in a few places that you can use tea tree oil and it works better?

does anyone else have any experience with this?

also, am i safe to go to work? i got diagnosed on friday and i've taken this whole weekend off. i'm scheduled to go back in on tuesday. is that safe for customers and other girls? will i make it worse for myself?

Do not go into work until you are completley healed. Ringworm is HIGHLY contagious. Recovery usually takes 2-3 weeks. If someone who is infected touches you...you can catch it, which is likely how you caught it. Someone you work with or a custie was infected, you touched them and bingo....now you've got it. It takes a bit of time, but it is fairly easily treated.

Yup. You can even spread it to other people by touching exercise equipment at the gym. It's not really harmful. Just make sure you treat it.

It's EXTREMELY contagious, you probably got it from someone else. I wouldn't go around others until you are treated. I had it on my arm, I actually got it from my ex mother-in-law's cats. I kind of stirred clear of others until it healed which unfornuately was about a week.

If the contagious thing doesnt deter you from going to work..consider this..ringworm glows under blacklight. Would not look too good!LOL!

Once treatment has begun and the circular rash begins to shrink, the rash won't be contagious. Until then, however, a person with ringworm can spread it to others.

I had ringworm once when I got my kitty. She had it but we couldn't see it until we checked her for it and sure enough she had a few spots on her belly.

It spread SO fast and it was really gross looking. DON'T work with it. PLEASE! You'll give it to your customers and/or the other girls. Keep putting the cream on and don't scratch the sores. It will look better in about a week or so.

thanks guys. and jayda, i appreciate you finding that information for me, good to know i'm not going to be contagious for too long.

have been reading forums where people have suggested clear nail polish as this 'suffocates' the fungus. i may try that. trying to find a bit more info first.
can't imagine it will do my skin much good though. another thing that's popping up is using bleach! chemical burns i don't fancy however, but people report that this does do the trick.

has anyone used anything homeopathic and had results?
also, do you guys think it is a good idea to go back to the doctors and ask for something i can take orally too? antifungal tablets? they do exist right?

i'm just worried it's gonna take ages to go away.
i'm not usually too worried about missing time off work as i save, but recently i have had a few things happen where i've had to dip into my savings quite substantially so i'm really worried if this doesn't clear up soon.
    argh!

Ringworm is SUCH a pain in the ass. I got it once on my wrist from working at the vet hospital. Blah.
Thankfully I figured it out fast, and it never got big or too icky...but it stayed for.ev.er.

First, check all over your body to make sure you're only infected in the one spot. Then treat it to the make with the antifungal stuff, and wear a clear plastic bandage over it. Ringworm is SO CONTAGIOUS.

You're also going to have to disinfect your house like mad and wash all your sheets, towels, etc with bleach. It's really easy to reinfect yourself.

It takes a hell of a long time to go away too...depending on how big the spot is. If you can't wait until it's completely gone before going back to work (for real, it took over two months for my spot to completely disapear, though it probably stopped being contagious...still...you have to be so vigilant...veterinarians treat ringworm like it's the plague- EVERYONE gets it when it's around the building!) then you'll have to wear a bandage over the infected area and wash your hands a lot. If it's completely covered, you won't spread it.

Good luck! And my sympathies. It's such a pain.

^ yeah, you have to disinfect REALLY well. if its on sheets or something and it gets to your scalp, your hair will fall out in that spot.

I got 2 small patches of it once on my knee and forearm (strange!) when I adopted a new kitty from a shelter.

    TEA TREE OIL!

It took it away very fast.

You can use the same cream for athlete's foot to treat it. It's pretty simple.

I had it on my scalp and a million other places on my body as a kid and I can *still* feel the little spot where it was at on my head. :shiver:

i had it when i was a kid and i got it from playing with a kid who had it. you PROBABLY got it from touching a customer with it. since, skin to skin contact is one of the biggest ways it's trasmitted.. the other is by handling animals that have it.

just use the cream (or whatever) they gave you and it'll go away. tea tree oil won't kill the fungus but it's good for reducing the raised surfaces caused by it. i'd wait till it's almost gone to start using anything other than the prescription on it though.

it can take 4-6 weeks to completely go away, but it's usually almost invisible within a week or two. just make sure you KEEP using the medication even after it LOOKS like it's gone or it will come back.

Ringworm is easy to catch and easy to treat. I got a patch on my arm once working at a pediatric hospital...kids are grubby. At the time, I had no healthy insurance and no money (poor overworked resident). I had some spray for athlete's foot...sprayed it on twice a day and it went away in about 10 days.

Ringworm (tinea) is the same fungus that causes athlete's foot and jock itch. You can catch it, but the fungus also lives dormant in the top layer of the skin, and can activate under specific conditions usually involving long-term moist areas of the skin, as can happen if you work out a lot or live in a humid environment. So in essence, you can 'give' it to yourself by allowing areas of your body to remain damp for long periods over time.

Tinea's easy to cure, though. I had a case of athlete's foot and bought Lamisil OTC cream, and it knocked it out in less than a week. Great stuff.

Meh. Why couldn't she just cover with a bandage taped on all sides and go to work? How would that harm anyone?

I think you are talking about tinea versicolor. Which isn't ringworm
