    Default Sinus Pressure and Headaches

    Gawd.

Please someone tell me what I can do to ease my sinus pressure in my face. I'm drinking water, probably not enough. But I feel like my face is swelling up, my vision is blurred from pressure pressing on my face and probably optic nerve. I've built up a tolerance to most sinus meds, and I take Excedrin and nothings helping. Heeeellllppp! I want to shoot myself in the face!

Try steaming. It should ease the pressure. If you dont have a proper steamer, just fill up the sink with boiling water, if you have something like eucyliptus (sp?) oil put a few drops in there and then put a towel over your head and breath it in for as long as possible.

You could also try cleaning the sinuses out with warm water and salt.
If you have a syringe (obviously without the needle) or something you can use to shoot water up your nose use warm water and a teaspoon of salt and put it up one nostril and then blow it back out.

As for the pressure you can do some self massage, applying pressure. Try placing your pointer fingers or thumbs on your eyebrows, side of nose, cheeks and even the back of your head near your neck. They are all spots were the sinus pressure builds up.

if it's that bad, maybe you've got a sinus infection.

i used to get the most miserable sinus headaches. got diagnosed with a sinus infection after years of near daily headaches, took some antibiotics, felt better for a while, but it came back. after treating the second one, i've been fine, thankfully. now, anytime i feel any sort of sinus pain, i go straight to the sudafed.

when you say you've built up a tolerance to sinus meds, does that include pseudoephedrine (sp)? if you've just been taking sudafed pe type stuff, that stuff is crap, and you need to get the real stuff over the counter at the pharmacy. if you've been taking the real stuff, well, the doctor is your only real option at this point.

I know exactly what my sinus infections feel and act like, and this wasn't it because my mucus was the wrong color.

Also, I have no health insurance, and before I've even been put on TWO rounds of Augmentin XR, which is the strong antibiotic out there. Infection always comes back. I've pretty much figured out that my only option to fix this is a septoplasty.

Yes, I have been taking Sudafed PE. Do those not qualify as strong? I admit, they don't do shit anymore. I take one, they don't do shit, I take 2, and I'm overly jittery because it's too much. Any recommendations for OTC stuff that's affordable?

Mucinex (or the generic, guaifenesin) is very good for helping mucus drain from your sinuses. It is an entirely different drug than Sudafed (pseudoephedrine) so it will not give you the shakes. I'll let wikipedia explain it:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guaifenesin

Oh, and even though name-brand Mucinex is very expensive, the generic tablet is usually much cheaper. If your drugstore doesn't have the generic tablet, you can buy generic Robotussin liquid, the "expectorant" formula, and take a double dosage. Make sure the ONLY active ingredient is guainefesin! You can OD easily on other ingredients frequently found in cold medicines and feel pretty bad with only a double dosage.

I freakin' love practical pharamcology. It's too bad the theoretical part, the chemistry, goes waaaaay over my head.

Try a neti pot. You mix a mild saline solution and put it in the pot. It looks like a small teapot. You insert the tip into one nostril and tip your head to the side. Slowly pour the water in one nostril and it runs out the other nostril. The pot should come with directions. It cleans everything out and helps your sinuses to drain.

real sudafed is about 10$ for a week's supply. and it works great. i tried sudafed pe when it first came out, and it made me feel worse. WORSE! you have to ask for sudafed at the pharmacy counter, instead of just taking it off the shelf and taking it to the register. they run your ID to make sure you don't buy too much of it at once. it's a pain, but it's soooo worth it.

that said...when i had my sinus infections, there was nothing nasty coming out of my nose till i went to the doctor and was on antibiotics and pseudoephedrine. i had also gone for years with horrible, horrible sinus headaches that went away after getting treated for a sinus infection. so, if it's not an infection now, it'll probably become one if you don't deal with the congestion now.

Well, I've been to GPs and ENTs, and even had an appointment about a year ago where the ENT went through every medication recommendation short of surgery. I had tried them all. So he basically said septoplasty was the only solution because my septum is horribly deviated. They are just reluctant to do surgery because it of course has risks. But I don't care; I don't want to live like this anymore! My poor liver for one, wants a break!

^^ get the surgery. I am having it done at the same time as my rhinoplasty in November. If the septum is deviated there is no way for the sinuses to drain properly and you will just have trouble with them forever.

I started seeing an ENT Specialist just recently. They did a CS on me just last week. I've been miserable with the same exact sinus problems, and they are so bad that the specialist has prescribed me ASTHMA medication to treat them. Not to mention that CVS has made a fortune off of me this whole year, heh. If he says I need surgery...I'm going for it. I can't live like this anymore!

I had a mildly deviated septum and a sinus infection that wasn't fully responding to antibiotics (it didn't feel like an infection but it didn't feel right, either). I got a second opinion about a septoplasty; that doctor didn't think it was necessary. He prescribed an antifungal nasal rinse, which keeps things under control nicely. Unfortunately, I have to take it pretty long-term to kill the face fungus, but I feel much better now.

Well, I don't have any pollups or fungus in my sinuses, just the septum problem. And I can't do anything til R gets a good job with medical insurance.
