Default Very specific question for the hair gals:

I am going to use Colorfix tomorrow to pull out an undesired dark permanent haircolor. From what I understand, because permanent color has to lift slightly in order to deposit the color permanently, my hair is going to be slightly bleached and most likely have an orangey or reddish tint to it after the color is removed. Also, my hair has been dyed many times, so I'm afraid the color may pull unevenly and have all sorts of different shades going on.

I want to get back to my natural dark ash blonde. Would a blue/violet toner after the Colorfix correct the color and even out the tone, or am I better off just finding a nice ash blonde dye and redying it?

And please, please do not tell me to go to a professional. My hair was originally ruined by a "professional" and the FOUR I've gone to since to fix it have only messed it up further. I believe in education and diligence over "professionalism" at this point.

If your hair is long or thick, you'll want to grab two boxes of Colorfix so that you are not running to the store in a transition state. You can always return an unused box.

Your hair will be more porous after the treatment and will soak up whatever dye you use...so you might want to go with a light/medium ash blonde dye shade rather than a darker one (and leave it on for less time than required). Strand test! Yes, you'll probably have an array of hues throughout the hair---but when you color over this it might add a little dimension. I think a true ash shade will cancel out the oranginess enough that you won't need an additional toner. Toner alone is unlikely to cut it.

You'll want to pick up a protein treatment and a regular deep conditioner.

You can totally do this yourself.

Awesome!! Thanks, Sienna. This is very helpful! I'm going to do the protein and deep conditioning treatments and give my hair at least a week to rest before re-dying.

There's this idea that girls only do their hair themselves if they're broke and that if you want it done right and have the money to spend you MUST go to a salon. Rubbish, I'm thinking. If I can gain the knowledge and skill to do my own hair, who better to do it? I'm the only one who will be picky and perfectionistic enough to make sure it's done right.

Oh, man. I am a happy camper. Colorfix WORKS. It was very drying, so I was glad to have the Apoghee protein pack and homemade shea/jojoba/olive oil contioner pack on hand.

My hair is only very slightly orangy. I mean, I'm *almost* thinking of leaving it like this--that slight. Do you think a toner would suffice? Also, would a toner darken it at all?

I am so fucking excited right now. I can't even say how empowering this feels. I have spent well over $1000 in the past year trying to correct my hair color in salons. Now I've *almost* done it myself for 20 bucks.

You might want to try washing a few times with Clairol Shimmerlights shampoo. That may be enough to take out the orange tone.

You're awesome, Sienna. Are you a stylist or just a color junkie?
