    Default Chopping my hair off...

I just found a place that makes wigs for kids with cancer. I have a 4 year old "neice" on my husband's side who has jaw cancer. So far, she's remained in remission (YAY!!) but it kind of brought home how devastating this kind of illness on a child could be.

So, as of tomorrow, I will have my hair chopped off...taking my hair from my waist to a short bob (approximately 14 inches).

I have naturally curly hair so now I am trying to find a style that would work with the curls. I have VERY naturally curly hair. VERY.

Does anyone know what kind of short style would work well? Any ideas or suggestions???

BTW...the place is Wigs for Kids.

The angled bob is very "in"right now. That's basically where your hair cut right at the hairline on your neck then angled down your jaw forward. So, it's shorter in the back and gets longer towards the front. It also depends on your face shape Venus. I remember you having a very pretty long face but I can't remember the exact shape. You can use this link to get an idea of what it is. I'll try to find some more pictures of that bob. http://www.hairstyle.com/hair-articl...face-shape.htm

awesome! I cut about 15 inches off this past spring break.. taking my hair from past my ass to mid back, and donated it.

It's a great cause. We don't realize the things we take for granted.

Wow, good for you Venus! I think the Posh bob is really cute too, but I've never seen a picture of you.

Oh yeah, you could definately pull of the angled bob. In fact I think it'd look great on you. I'd throw in some red highlights as well. You have a gorgeous face, btw.

Okay, here are some pictures I found. I think you should do it without the bangs/fringe. These were just pictures of the actual cut that I found. I also think a few auburn/deep red highlights would look nice as well. Just my opinion.

Good for you! My ex cut off his hair (It weighed over 2 lbs!) and donated it to locks of love.

I think that the posh bob would look good as well.

I think you could pretty much shave your head and still be a knockout.

I dunno about the angled bob with really curly hair, though, I think I disagree with you gals. Unless she wants to spend an hour with the hairdryer and flatiron every single day, it's not going to look the same. I've learned that lesson the hard way - just because a hairstyle is cute on someone else . . .

VG, I'd go totally short and let the curls do their thing naturally. I have a friend who did this, and I WISH I had a pic of hers to post, but it was VERY cute. Sort of think Princess Di in length & basic overall shape, only much sassier, with curls laying close to the head? I don't know if that does it justice . . .

just make sure ur bang or the hair in the front is at least chin length or mid cheek. If you go any shorter than that prepare to straighten ur hair everyday or risk looking very funny.I learn the hard way.

Very pretty!! I think the bob would look great on you, but you will have to be prepared to style your hair every day like mentioned above. If you don't wanna do that, look for a style that lets you rock your natural curls more easily.

I have seen girls with curly bobs and it looks just as cute as those with straight ones. I think the style gives the hair more form as opposed to all one length. One of the pics I posted is one with curly hair, minus the bangs I think it would look hot.

I love the first pic...but, yeah. I don't have time to spend in front of a mirror with a hair dryer and flat iron every day. My hair is very curly...and although you cannot really tell in the pics...long hair pulls my curls out. If I went too short, I would look like Bride of Bozo...not a good mommy look. LOL

I may do a cute bob...with some layers, but something that will look great with my curls and would look great if I decided to straighten it...

I'll post a pic of what I get.

    Thanks, ladies!!

While this is a wonderful gesture, it's important to research these charities. Locks of Love is regarded as rather shady by many due to their output of wigs vs. donations:

"In 2002, LoL received enough hair to make approximately 10,000 hairpieces. What a huge difference this would make to those under 18 with hair loss. Yet give.org cites they only made 113 wigs from human hair in that same year along with 61 other pieces for a total of 174 hairpieces. Where did the other 9,826 potential hairpieces go? Also, according to give.org, LoL does not open their financial records to the public like any reputable charity should."

Wigs for Kids may be fine though. They do not seem to be the target of the same criticisms as LoL.

Thanks Circe, I was just about to post the same thing.

The Better Business Bureau renounced Locks of Love three years ago for refusing to make their books public.

Locks of Love has also been known to promote themselves as an organization that provides "free wigs to kids with cancer", which of course motivates caring people to chop off their hair, thinking it's going to go to an ill child.

First off, LoL does not offer free wigs. The wigs ARE reduced, and are given to individuals for $500-1000.

They also don't give the wigs to cancer patients. They are usually given to alopecia patients, a non-terminal illness (not to say alopecia patients shouldn't get them; however, many people think they are helping a dying child). Doctors agree that human-hair wigs aren't good for kids anyway, they are too hard to take care of, are uncomfortable, and not durable enough.

And finally, the biggest complaint is that LoL only uses about a tenth of the hair they receive in donations for wigs. The rest they sell to salons to be made into extensions. While I understand that a charity needs to raise funds, so many people chop off their hair, doing it only because they think it will end up on some dying child's head, helping to ease childhood torment and ridicule. Instead, it is far more likely to end up on some girl's head in a salon; if people knew that, they would far less likely to part with their hair.

Be aware that if your hair is dyed or regularly heat styled, it will not be made into a wig, as it could not withstand the process required. It will be thrown out, or, if it was only moderately damaged, be sold for extensions.

    Yay!!

    I did it!!

I got 14 1/2 inches chopped off. I ended up getting a really cut angled bob. It is cut just a little longer than usual to account for curly hair...but it looks really cute (and it's straight right now).

*aaaaaaaaahhh* It feels so nice to not have a huge amount of hair sweating up my back...

    YIPPEEEEEE!!!

My hair is curly like yours and I love my angled bob. It's like having two totally different haircuts with the option of straightening it, too!

I can't wait to see pics!

Ok...here are the pics of my hair.

Please excuse the makeup-less and shiny face (it's hot and humid today)...and I was trying to take these pics while my daughter cried about not having the camera and my son cried about whatever it was he was crying about. LOL

I do like how it came out, though. I can wear it both ways. I'll post a pic tomorrow with curly hair.

    Ok...here they are!

Great decision! You must have that feeling of being all infatuated with your own head right now.
