    Default safety in NYC

I am interested in visiting the city sometime soon and would like to work out there but I'm wondering how you girls get home safe at night in Manhattan. I would think that taking a cab home everynight wouldnt be that safe knowing that anyone could be following you home. How do you ladies deal with this issue there?

Perhaps this is a very "New York-Y" answer (and I'm sure not too helpful at that) but it's the city. *Shrug*

I mean, I guess you could get followed, but in Manhattan you could get followed anywhere. That is, if they're really insistent in their pursuit..

Even as a non dancer, if a guy wants to follow you through lets say, Times Square, it would be pretty hard to catch him behind you. There are trillions upon trillions of people.

All I can say is, watch your back, keep your bag(s) zipped shut (only use bags that zip or lock shut btw), wear casual, non provocative clothing, and don't make eye contact. CAB IT EVERYWHERE after midnight, don't use subways or walk.

Try your best to avoid looking too "strippery" outside of the club.

I park my car in a garage 1 and 1/2 blocks away from the club, and choose to have a cab drive me (which takes 4 blocks and costs me 6 bucks) instead of walking it at 4am. I'd rather pay the six bucks then take a chance... I worry more about random people who see me on the street (whether they recognize me as a stripper = $$$$ or as just a young pretty girl on the street) than I do clients waiting specifically for me.

I do however wish the club offered us the service of getting those of us who drive to our cars safely. Though, in all fairness, few of us do drive in...

Hope that helps a 'lil! I've lived in NY all my life, and have only had one friend ever get attacked at all, and that was in broad daylight, and had nothing what so ever to do with anything dancing related. All they got was her camera *Thank God*

Well... I feel that NYC is somewhere in the middle of the safety spectrum. Bad things can happen anywhere, right? So you shouldn't automatically assume that the stalker/weirdo/killer types just hang out by strip clubs (or NYC strip clubs specifically).
Here is the deal, some clubs have unmarked entrances for dancers to walk into and out of without going through the club itself. They are usually side entrances which custies don't really notice. Custies even comment on how dancers just "appear" in the club but they are never seen walking into the front door. You can always request a bouncer to hail a cab for you so you don't have to wait alone outside. Oh, and have you ever tried running after a cab? They fly! Well, they drive pretty damn crazy and a stalker type would be very hard pressed to follow you!
I have been walking around NYC streets at all hours of the night since I was 15 years old. From my experience, you are never really alone. It's very much a 24-hour city. You might be coming home at 3am but there are oodles of people just getting their first cup of coffee for work.
Here are some helpful hints for walking home in NYC:

    - Invest in pepper spray if you feel very uncomfortable walking outside at night.
    - Keep your wits about you (Meaning try to avoid stumbling home drunk, you become less aware of your surroundings).
    - Stay on well lit and wide streets even if it makes your trip a little longer.
    - Dress comfortably with sneakers or flat shoes so that you can walk quickly in case something suspicious seems to be going down.

    You can also....
    - Cab it home with a friend/co-worker. There is safety in numbers and cabbies don't mind making an extra stop plus you can split fares or take turns paying.

I guess I'm a jerk but I walk to the train station every night I work (that's 8 blocks). I very rarely take a cab. I try not to stand out too much and walk quickly like I have something important to do. Most people don't pester me. Et voila!

Like I said, I've been running around NYC for a while and I have been fortunate enough to avoid bad situations. Street smarts are a good thing to have but playing it safe is always your best option.
