While going through my aunt and uncle's garage (I rent a room from them), I found my Asian electric rice cooker. I had been looking for it for ages. How I love that white, fluffy staple! However, my reunion with my beloved denki gama was not a happy one.
I opened the lid, and I saw a bunch of silverfish scatter. I nearly retched. The last time I had made rice, my aunt put it away in the garage before I got a chance to clean it properly. The silverfish had been feasting on the little pools of dried rice water that had evaporated to starch flakes around the lid. I quickly drowned them in hot soapy water by taking out the metal pot. I then thoroughly cleaned the whole pot with Clorox wipes (this was the electric component, so I stuck with wipes), and used Q-tips to clean out every last bit of dried rice starch. I am now using the cooker itself as an autoclave. You see, rice cookers cook rice with steam and pressure, just like an autoclave. I filled the pot with water but no rice, and I'm letting it run like how sometimes you clean out your washing machine with water, bleach, and soap.
No, I'm not throwing it out. This thing cost me over $100, and the steam and pressure should kill off the germs.
