Thread: odd question

    Default odd question

So I've come to realize that I really enjoy giving people advice and helping them when I can. It makes me feel great when I know that someone has fixed a problem in their life and I had a hand in that.I also have a lovely psych degree that is not being used...

What I'd really love is to be an advice columnist. But I have no idea how to begin...or how to market it. Any ideas??

And for those of you who know me on here..do you think any advice I've given here has been helpful? Or am I deluding myself and should just keep my mouth shut? Be honest..I can take it.

I dunno anything about how u can get involved, but quite often you have realistic and good thoughts. Maybe you can write to magazines and ask. Or post on craiglist so that somebody might help you. maybe take a journalist class or get in contact with some, they might have good ideas. =)

Well we know you can take it! While I have never actually came to you for advice I find our conversations at work to be fun and interesting. Now that I actually stop and think about it, whenever i talk to you i feel like you KNOW what you are talking about and I have come to respect your opinion.

I think you have the right blend of sarcasm and common sense for advice column writing. The ability to tell it like it is while making people laugh. Now I have absolutely no idea how you would get started on this little adventure but I can tell you this much...... I would totally read it!!!

Thanks honey...this made me SO happy. I mean..there are a ton of know-it-alls out there who THINK their advice is awesome while everyone around them rolls their eyes and wishes they would shut up. I just wna tto make sure I am not one of THOSE!!

no, i think you've been very on-target from what i've seen. and you touched a key point on why i hang out on forums in general. i like helping people too and it makes me happy to some degree that i made a difference in someone's life. (ok, corny but nevertheless true)

i'm not sure how you could get into an advice column situation though. mermaidnz was going to do that advice column in AU but i'm not sure how that turned out. i think it's more situational than actually being qualified in whatever professional. like that physiologist giving psychological advice. i never understood that one.

Maybe you could start with an internet blog and see if it gets attention from there?

You know I thought of that..but I'm not sure how to do that either. Do I have to buy another domain? And find someone to code it? I'm so lost....it seems like something I'd really love and I THINK I'd be good at it...but I have NO idea where to start.

I would just go to Blogspot and use one of their blog layouts and host it there for free. They'll put an ad on your page but so what? The layout there looks nice.

You can use any of the thousands of free blogsites and tools available, but it's all a moot point if you don't have any readers or participants. You can start slow, using something as simple as Myspace to get your blogs out in the open, invite people to read your blogs or coax them into a challenging discussion...
Professional papers will only give you a shot if you have yourself established or any other type of reference. You could try to submit some freelance work and see if it will interest a local newspaper. Bottomline, you have to start slow, you can't just attempt to barge in.

Wow, that was quick! But there's no way for anyone to send you a question. Maybe you should create a free email account too and put that in the post, so that people can email you? Then you can pick the questions you want to answer.

well, I like reading your posts, and sometimes you have me in stitches. You are obviously very intelligent and have a lot of good sense.

As for starting an advice column, I would contact people who are less-mainstream like the guy who writes Savage Love (gay advice column) and ask them to do feature spots (i guess like being a feature dancer?) in their column. You can use your posts here as part of your resume.

Seeing as you are one of my faves along with Ms. Yek in the "funny" posting department (Ya'll have yet to set off my viscious case of PDSD - Post Dramatic Stripper Disorder ) I say go for it......maybe a good start would be an "Ask Cameron Keys" thread???

    ^^double Aww....

I could start an Ask Cameron keys thread here...but I feel like it would be ..I dont know...somehow wrong or inappropriate to do it here. Like people would think I was just looking for attention....we've certainly seen quite a few "LOOK AT ME" threads over the years. I'd hate to annoy people.

If theres an interest..I'll do it. I think it would be fun! Maybe I should make a poll...

Well..you can comment on the blog, then I can start a new blog with the answer. Did my email show up? You can email to that address if it did....

    I voted yes, I think it's a great idea.

You have years of experience working in a very rough business, experience in a related but also probably rough business, a great attitude, a sense of humor, you are tolerant of others but know when to draw the line. Etc., etc.

As far as doing it here, I don't see why not. It would sure be a hell of a lot less irritating than reading about disgusting smelly balls, sperm, etc., like we keep having to do, lol! Or me bitching about it, for that matter.

But the blog is also a great idea! Maybe you should put the link to it in your signature.

    Moments later...

I just visited it, looks good! But I tried to leave a comment, and it wanted me to log in with my Google account. I can do that (though I didn't mess with it then as I forgot my password), but why do we have to do that? It might limit participation.

I have no idea...I'm flying by the seat of my virtual pants on this one!

I agree that sucks though...any ideas for somewhere I could put it that would be open to everyone without having to join anything?

I am speaking for myself, here--but why the hell not start a thread here? Maybe ask Paige first?

Seriously, with all the fluff and meaningless annoying banter we already have here, why not a thread that would be funny and might also actually help someone? It seems to me that the worst that could happen is that it will get buried on page 11 of The Lounge.

By all means keep the blog, though. I will figure out my Google pass and get back on there.
