    Default Special K Diet

What do you guys think of the SpecialK diet? I was watching Sex and the City Reruns last night (which were making me feel fat as usual) and they kept showing commercials for the "special K" diet. The ad claimed that I could lose up to a pants size in "as little as" 2 weeks.

I'm aware that the reason they advertise their products as a diet is to sell their product. But is this healthy? Here's what the website reccomends you do:

    1. Eat a bowl of SK for breakfast with fruit and skim milk
    2. Eat another bowl of SK or a protein meal bar for lunch
    3. Eat a normal meal for dinner
4.Have two snacks of SK products like their cereal bars, protein water, or snack bites
    5. Have fruits and veggies throughout the day as additional snacks.

What do you think? Also, what constitutes a "Dress size?" How many pounds do you think that is?

I've always heard a "dress size" referred to as about a 10lb gain or loss. In that case, the two week claim is probably bullshit unless the person is obese.

When I eat just cereal and fruit I tend to get hungry pretty fast. I think you'd be better off tossing some more eggs (for breakfast) or protein in there to tide you over.

I'd get so effing sick of Special K on that diet but if you don't know what to eat and don't care I guess its an easy to remember. The past few weeks I've had great success losing weight without hardly exercising by learning to control my binges and eating triggers.

I eat a decent breakfast (no an apple isn't a decent breakfast or one of those nasty chalky granola bars). I'm talking toast with jam, 2-3 eggs, skim milk and maybe some grits or handful of cereal. I usually graze in the afternoon on a handful or two of nuts and some fruit. Dinner I make sure I have fish or chicken (usually with lemon or herbs), vegtables (besides salad), and a tiny portion of carbs like rice or pasta. Break yourself off a piece of a chocolate bar and unwind with a glass of wine and I think you have a much more fun diet. I never stick with boring, regimental diets. Oh and besides the glass of wine I don't drink anything other than water, which I guzzle religiously. I've been managing around 8lbs a month by doing that and taking tonalin.

Actually I just remembered I've heard of the term "special K" used to mean drugs. That's pretty funny. But yes, SK is a cereal. I haven't tried it though... so I don't wanna buy a whole bunch and than realize I hate it.

Gretchen, your diet actually sounds really good to me... though I think I'd need more during the middle of the day. Myabe I could spread out parts of the breakfast till the noon hours.

I thought that too when I saw the thread title. I was like, "YES! That's a diet I would love."

Okay sorry - back on topic...

The more I look at what I typed the more I realize that it isn't a diet. Its just eating sensibly, not starving yourself until you consume everything in sight (which is what the Special K diet sounds like), and not depriving yourself of desert or sticking to crappy weight loss products. I used to have major binge and purge issues until I started caring more about nutritious, good tasting food in whatever quantities I felt my body needed to be healthy. It was an accidental diet. Sometimes it takes longer to cook than unwrapping a bar or stirring a shake, but your body will thank you. I didn't mean to lose weight when I started cooking good food. I tried diet shakes, pills, nasty protein bars and I'd always go back to eating crap food because the taste was so nasty and unfulfilling.

/gets off soapbox. Apologies, Ive been on a major cooking kick and I seem to want to tell everyone about this great food I've been making lately. Applying to culinary school has gotten me all riled up.

Anyone else think Special Ks Protein Water is ridiculous?

Oh man, if ketamine was a diet.....I'd be so thin

I wholeheartedly agree. I'm almost glad that I was diagnosed as hypoglycemic because it forced me to find a way of eating that I love, AND can live with.

I went off it all summer and wound up with a 15lb weight gain...how stupid is that? So now, back to my life and knowing I can never go back to eating processed foods again.

Protein+whole grains+good fats+veggies+low glycemic fruit = My Diet. No added sugars and no processed foods.

The Special K thing would be good for a kick start or to motivate you, but honestly, could you live like that forever?

This diet is a marketing tactic. For some people, this diet may cause weight gain.

So far the best diet/ Lifestyle change i have used is :

    http://www.physiquetransformation.com

Teaches you the right foods to eat, and allows you to choose you own menues, while keeping track of every nutrient, calorie, ect. It is alot of work to prepare all the meals, and gives you a good amount of food to eat. I was never hungry when on this diet and lost a lot of weight, while learning hopw to eat right.

The Special K "Diet" is not really all that good. It's carb on carb ( skim milk has all the lactose of regular milk ) and fruit has fructose. For women especially ; sugar is the fast lane to weight gain.

I don't doubt that people lose weight like this, but it's not necessary. Also, how healthy can dried, refined, boxed food like this really be?

I'd rather calculate the calories and have variety and fresh foods instead. It's like Slimfast...sure you can lose weight by eating that way. You can also do it by having a variety of foods and scaling down your portions. Which I think sounds more liveable long term.

It would only work for the people who eat significantly more calories in a day than two bowls of cereal and some fruits and veggies. Totally marketing.

Special K is pretty much artificial ingredients, chemically processed wheat germ, and high-fructose corn syrup. That does not sound like a healthy diet to me at all. And besides, you can't do that forever; you need more variety in a healthy diet, and who the hell wants to eat cereal for almost every meal?

I personally believe high-fructose corn syrup is De Debbil and must be avoided completely.

I don't agree with diets in general because they aren't permanent changes.

I joined Weight Watchers in August 2001 at nearly 160 lbs, I am 5'3". In my opinion, Weight Watchers taught me how to eat and I in turn made a lifestyle change. I know a lot of you who just want to shed a few lbs. can't justify joining WW, however if you want to look healthy, IMO, you have make healthy choices and educate yourself on what is healthy and what is not. And of course what portions you should have. Losing weight and keeping it off requires a lfestyle change which means a permanent change must me made. By June 2002 I weighed 112 lbs and started dancing at that point. I have kept the weight off and now weigh 108 lbs.

This diet is just a marketing ploy. Of course you'll lose weight on it. Your only eating a bowl of cereal for 2 meals! You have to eat a serving size bowl of the cereal, which is 1 cup I think. Maybe 2/3 of a cup. You'll be hungry as hell, and bored sick of cereal by the third day.

    Exactly!!

-bowl of special k: 200 cals
    -apple: 50 cals
-bowl of special k: 200 cals
    -orange: 30 cals
-chicken and vegetables (or similar dinner): 500 cals

    TOTAL: 980 calories

Not enough..... for anyone of any size or activity level. Not to mention you'll just be eating refined carbohydrates and sugar for half the day...

I like Special K, but I definitely couldn't do it. I rarely eat cereal anymore. I'm hungry like an hour later.

That water is so gross! My friend drinks these all the time so one day I tried one out of curiosity and it tastes horrible!! I took one sip and thought I was going to puke haha! They are so expensive too. The only special k product I really like are the breakfast bars...they make a decent breakfast/snack if you have to eat on the run.

Bwahaha, the ketamine-euphemism references just reminded me of when I was in my late teens and early twenties. I had no damn common sense (still don't, really) and was always acting retarded. My first name begins with K and all my friends called me "Special" K because I was, you know, short-bus "special."
