    Default guam health prep

I'm going to Guam for two months, most likely, at the end of this month. I lived in the Philippines for a year when I was 12. My mom said I didn't have to have any specialized shots for it. Should I call my dr and let her know that I'm traveling? Will this typically raise my premium? (I'm pretty sure it raises on October 1st or something. It costs me money to go to preventative meetings). Do i need shots now, 11 years later? What else should I think about doing other than stocking up on my BC (which I get through Planned Parenthood)?

Yeah, so just any ideas about good health/body issues to think about while I'm prepping. Other than stocking up on my favorite Bath & Body Works body butter.

I dont like the dentist there, and I did not need shots going over there, I know you will need a car. You can let your dr. know your traveling he will tell you do not drink the water from the sink ( trust me). No raw food!
If you are going to live off base. You should know that guam has a lot issues with there water. They are always breaking a lot pipes. Everything is expensive off base. When the kitty hawk comes in BEWARE. I pretty much do not like the doctors over there off base. Some are good, some our real dirty.

Other than that Have a great time. It is a nice island. Everyone is pretty friendly!

I was in Guam for a short period of time.

They aren't kidding about the water. I tried just brushing my teeth with it, and was violently ill.

What should I do about the water? In the philippines we just used a water filter (brita). is that adequate?

Also as an american citizen w/ a passport, is it a bitch to get on base? Do I need to file paperwork/register with people or can I just show up at the gate to use their services?

As far as I know, water filter won't work. Water filters only take out excess minerals; if the water itself is contaminated, it won't work.

Your best bet is to buy bottled water and use that for brushing (make sure it's sealed though. In many places, empty bottles are just filled with tap and put on the shelves) and stick to sealed juice/soda otherwise. In Egypt, when I couldn't find bottled water, I had to brush with Coke...it was gross.

Also, because this is something I didn't realize, do not eat the fruit, unless it has a peel, like oranges. Because the fruit is washed/grown with the water, it's also contaminated, which is something I didn't think of until my whole hotel was ill frome ating fruit at the buffet.

You need to be affiliated with the military, i.e. active duty member, reservist, spouse, etc. to use their services.

If you aren't, you are not eligible, and can only be on base escorted by someone who is.

Also, they used to let escorted visitors into the NEX(the department store etc.) on Camp Marianas(Navy Base), but they stopped, b/c too many locals/civilians etc. were abusing the privilege...re-selling goods etc.....you could still sit out in the food-court, which is what I had to make my friend do, while I did my shopping.

Andersen (Air Force Base) wasn't as strict, but their bx sucked anyway.

You need to be cool with someone who have rights to be on base. Or work for the military. You can be apart time teachers I know DODEA is always looking for teachers. You will have to get certified, and you can be a sub. Having some way to shop on base. Makes it a little more easy! You really do not need a passport to get into guam. If you have a baby in guam it will take only 30 days to gain citizenship. This is the easiest place to gain US citzenship.

Shopping on base suppose to be a military right. Things are cheaper in Guam on the base. Other wise the cheapest thing is K-mart. The good thing is prada is cheaper on Guam. A lot designer wear is cheaper!

I use to fly to hawaii and put things on layway in walmart. Than send the payments. When the layway was over pick it up! Guam is way more expensive than hawaii. Thats is how bad the prices is! I paid $1300.00 for a three bedroom. That was three years ago!

Cool, so it sounds like my best strategy to get on base for their services is to befriend a nice military boy... man, life is hard

Sounds like it's going to be cheaper to pay to bring staples to Guam as excess baggage (like soap, mouthwash, other living supplies). Hmm, I assume that they have a TON of mosquitos too, right?

If I want people to send me items/send items to the mainland, are the local post offices there easy to use or should I try to use the postal service through the base?

yea you could, but that is not the only way! There are chamorro who can go on base. Be friends with one the miltary families or females. People are pretty laid back, they understand!

I use the local post services to mail things, I know I will wait for a long time to recieve mail. I heard of promblems. Yet I have not experience them!

No, not too many mosquitos, I don't remember ever being bitten. They have geckos though.
, and HORDES of stray dogs!!!

Yep, find a military plaything, if you're lucky you can piggyback on his p.o. box on base, other than that you'll have to actually pay for a box at this place called Post Net, near the Micronesia mall. Mail takes a long time from the states, btw.

Kmart is not majorly expensive when it comes to toiletries, no need to waste money flying heavy items such as mouthwash, imho. I mean, its only 2 months, and again, you'll have a b/f on base!!!!

*pointer*, if you can, try to choose a dude on a sub (submariner), they're gone alot(short, frequent trips), and u can usually sweet talk/suck them into letting you have their car while they're on a cruise

Good idea I did not even think about that! I think she can have a guess pass up to 90 days. (For the miltary)

I'm curious as to why you're going to Guam.

    Are you SE Asian/Pacific Islander?
