    Default intense wisdom tooth pain

My wisdom teeth are coming in...I know I was supposed to have them taken out five years ago, but what can I say, I fear surgery. So yesterday this one started to hurt a lot, but I ignored it. Today it's worse still...I can't chew on the right side, and now even my speech is slurred from the pain and swelling of the gum. Dammit. I know the greater solution is to have the thing taken out, but do you think in the meantime I need to see a dentist? Will painkillers be enough for the short term? I hate the dentist.

See a dentist. I had that problem and it ended up being an infected tooth, I had to take antibiotics for a few days and then get my wisdom teeth removed.

oh, and... the dentist is going to tell you to get them taken out. what else can he do? he's not going to give you painkillers when you could resolve the problem by taking them out.

Yeah, just pull them already. I've still got two wisdom teeth that aren't bothering me so they're still there, but I lost two... one was breaking and dying so I had it pulled, and then the one under it didn't have anything to bite against, so it died and abcessed. I woke up one morning with the entire side of my jaw and neck swollen because I ignored the pain for a couple of days. When they pulled the tooth it cleared up completely in less than 48 hours.

It's not THAT bad. I've heard all the horror stories about wisdom tooth extraction, but I was enjoying a delicious chicken dinner at my mom's house the same night I had the second tooth pulled (just chewing on the other side of my mouth). If your teeth are impacted and they have to cut them out, that's more hassle, but if they're already sticking up out of your gums, they just pull the tooth and it's over. No big deal at all.

Take them out. All of mine were impacted and came out the same day. Just go get it done. Sometimes the pain will come and go for a while but at some point it's here to stay until you take care it.

It's not so bad. I'm not a doctor, but painkillers should help.

When my wisdom teeth needed to come out I had a few days before my surgery was scehduled, and a friend gave me some of her Vicodan and that helped (I know I shouldn't have taken someone else's prescription).

Anything with Ibuprofen in it will reduce the swelling short term. Ice will help reduce the swelling as well. I'd get to the dentist ASAP before it gets infected. I had mine removed and I didn't think it was too bad. I recovered completely in a week. After two days I went back to my usual activities. It was just swollen and sore for the first week.

thanks guys. The thing is, this is Canada, and you have to wait for stuff...I have to see a special dentist for the wisdom things (my dentist told me), and last time I tried to schedule a consult with him, the appointment they made was in five months. But I guess if it's sore they could help it short term. It's not through the gum either...it's pushing hard against the gum, which is why it's so sore I'm guessing. Sigh. I'll call tomorrow and get with the tylenol. I'm hoping it goes away in a few days like Britt said.

Ohh, it's impacted. You can't live for five months with an impacted wisdom tooth. Do what you have to do to speed that up!

Ah shit. Figures. I have school starting next week, so I didn't want to miss it, but the whole side half of my face is pounding at this point. Tomorrow's Saturday too...hum. I'll do whats I can. For a gratuitous, nasty shot of the bump on the back of my mouth, and a view of my lovely yellow smoker's teeth, behold:

This is my favorite SW pic ever. Hands down.

An impacted wisdom tooth is a minor emergency. You can't let it go for five months while you wait on some dude. Whatever you need to do to get them cut out, do it ASAP.

Looks painful. The really bad thing is, and this is what my dentist told me when i didn't want to get mine out, is that if they are impacted like that they can fuck with your teeth alignment and stuff like that. so hurry hurry hurry. I would just say get some extra strength tylenol until you can get them out.

This is very, very true. I put off having impacted wisdom teeth removed. The problem with my doing that is that they decided to fuse with my jaw bone. So, a simple extraction 10 years prior would have been so easy...but since I waited SO long and the roots of 2 wisdom teeth were now attached to my jaw bone, I had to have oral surgery to get them removed. It wasn't that fun. Really.

It also DID mess with the alignment of my other teeth. I am now wearing Invisalign for the next year or so to straighten out my teeth. Also, not fun.

Take care of the problem, now. Also, impacted wisdom teeth that partially break surface, but cannot fully come in will get food trapped beneath the skin which will rot and give you some nasty pain and infection.

Get thee to a dentist and see if they can help that little tooth along...

Yep. In the last hour it's gotten almost ouchier. Hurts to swallow (I'm sorry, I have nothing better to do than e-whine). I'm sucking on ice right now and can't sleep. Fucking A. If the dentist is closed tomorrow, as I suspect he is, than I shall head off to the urgent care clinic and see what they can do in the meantime. I know about the alignment issues...you can maybe see that my teeth are mostly straight from braces. The orthodontist told me to have my wisdom teeth out ASAP when the rails came off so his work wouldn't be messed up. I should have listened, but c'est la vie.

You're wisdom teeth don't hurt when they are coming in, anyways,
The same thing happened to me, just out of no where I had really bad jaw pain on my top right side, I couldn't open my mouth all the way, it hurt to eat and talk, it hurt to lay on that side. I didn't know what the problem was so I felt back there and it was a tooth, I was like shit, I have to get this taken care of. You need to get to the dentist ASAP because the tooth has been there, the pain is from it starting to cause damage. I made an appointment the next day and had it removed, it costed $150 for 1 tooth and I had plenty to cover it, but it was a simple extraction, it depends on the type of extraction, if the tooth hasn't receded the gum line, it's a bigger problem because it will be more expensive and pain from that is worse. It means you could have a pocket that has already started damaging your back teeth, or it could be pushing your teeth. I'm saying that once you feel pain from wisdom teeth GO TO THE DENTIST, you aren't supposed to feel pain unless there is a problem that needs to be fixed ASAP.

I have one that I need to take out on my bottom left side, it barely receded my gum line, I can't even tell that it is there but it is, I feel no pain but if I just leave it there then food will get trapped underneath and bacteria and cause a bad infection that will be very painful and left untreated will cause your teeth to rot, so I need to do something soon myself before infection happens to me, lol.

OK, I see your wisdom tooth, same exact way mine was, simple extraction. Your pain is coming from it pushing on your jaw bone and other teeth. You can take pain medication to help the pain, but the pain isn't going to go away until you get it removed because it has no room to go anywhere so all it's going to do is keep pushing your teeth and jaw bone, which of course is going to be painful until it's gone.

Oh Jesus Christ, guys. It's gotten so bad I'm still on SW from the pain insomnia. I'm such a whimperer, but owwwww. I can't even open my mouth all the way or swallow right...plus my ear and throat are somehow sore from it. How has this come on so quickly? Ok I'm going to take two benadryl to sleep and then go to an urgent care in the morning. I checked the dentist hours online, and it's not open until monday. My dentist doesn't even do wisdom tooth extraction, but hopefully he'll send me to someone who will...and soon.

A dentist did mine, most dentists do simple extractions their selves (atleast here they do), just usually when it's more than a simple extraction then dentists won't do it, especially if it's a case where they have to remove jaw bone or something.

....jaw bone? what does that have to do with wisdom teeth? i think its unusual for a dentist to do wisdom teeth, ive always heard of people going to oral surgeons. but maybe thats just in some places.

It's rare, but in some cases people have such small jaws that when they cut the gum to remove the tooth, they can't fully remove it because jaw bone is in the way, so they have to cut a piece of the jaw bone out to get the tooth out.

You know, I jut thought of something funny, i'm SUCH a hypo, lol. I did so much research when I got my tooth pulled cause I was so worried about infections and stuff that I know all this stuff about wisdom teeth now.

most dentists won't do wisdom teeth. In my case I had to get a referral from my dentist to an oral surgeon. Impacted wisdom teeth are not a simple extraction.

Jaw bone has everything to do with wisdom teeth. My wisdom teeth decided to attach themselves to my jaw bone. You couldn't just "pull" the teeth out, they had to actually to cut out of the socket.
