    Default What are you cooking?

I'm trying to save money...so I started cooking. I got some awesome knives at Ikea, which is making it a pleasure. So far this week I have made Spicy Peanut Chicken, right now I have tandoori chicken marinating in the fridge, and a variety of cold tuna/egg salads and steamed veggies. I bought some interesting looking veggies at the farmer's market to experiment with. I am also looking for ideas. So what are you cooking?

I am very cooking challenged, but I love to make Linquini with Clam Sauce. It's very easy to make, and so yummy if you like clams!

^^^No, although I love your turkey wraps with bottled water. And I just bought those minute maid lemonade ice pops that you turned me onto.

I'm feeling lazy today. I squeezed the juice out of half a lime onto a chicken breast and sprinkled it with chili powder, then baked it. Threw some fresh broccoli into the electric steamer and sprinkled lemon pepper on, and steamed it. Ten minutes to assemble, 25 minutes to cook the chicken (15 minutes to steam the broccoli), lunch. Cheap and healthy too.

I started brewing my own kombucha today. The store bought kind is very expensive.

I love to make roasts for my family.

My crockpot gets quite a workout, too. Rizzoto is awesome in the crockpot. Ditto with chili.

I regularly make chinese style pepper chicken, tabouli, Turkey tetrazini, eggplant paraginia, and more sandwiches than subway could ever dream about! God, I love sandwiches...mmmmmmm.

Right now I'm stuck w/ bertolli dinners (you just heat them up over the stovetop and they're actually really good) or chicken stir fry-which is easy to make from scratch. I need some new ideas.

I really want to get a crockpot but hate that those meals take so long to cook.

I cook a few times a week for my man, this week I made baked pork chops, yek's corn casserole and garlic pasta for one meal. I can't remember what else. If i get a craving or idea for something i will just look it up online.
I also eat a ton of sammiches.
Oh an awesome quick meal is a bagel with cream cheese and pesto OMG to die for!!

get a slow cooker! so easy to throw some corn beef in with onions and stuff or even roast beef. I think that has been one of the first things i learned to cook becasue it was so easy and you dont need to tend to it much

Why? That's the point. You throw it all in there in the morning, cleanup, and forget about it. By the time you're ready for dinner, it's ready for you. You can go out, spend the day shopping, whatever you want to do, and you come home to a clean kitchen, a wonderful aroma, and a hot meal. Crockpots are the greatest! I love mine dearly, just made mustard greens in it a couple of days ago. I always fuck them up on the stovetop but they come out perfectly in the crockpot.

I just realized what a redneck cook I sound like on this forum - corn casserole, mustard greens, fried chicken. I really do make a lot of Asian and other foods too, I swear.

Phillyvixen, how'd you like the corn casserole? Total effing comfort food, seriously.

I made a lamb chop and a heap of sauteed green beans & carrots and a baked potato for dinner tonight. This was important because I try to be very careful to feed myself balanced meals, as if I'm my own mom. However, I've been cooking mostly for myself for a few months now (BF moved, roommate works weird hours), and I tend to get unmotivated, and that leads to me eating only junk food and smoothies. Case and point: both yesterday and today I ate Campbells soup and smoothies all day... eek! So I
buckled down and cooked me a balanced meal.

I also bought some Craisins at Publix today, so tomorrow morning I will eat oatmeal with Craisins... balanced breakfast! And then after my class I'm going to the Amish produce stand... veggies for balanced lunch and dinner! I've been dying for heaps of red chard and bunches of watercress so I hope they have them... that and berries for like a cobbler or something.

...Wow. Writing this post makes me excited to do some cooking tomorrow. Teef = Nerd.

    Three for tacos then!

Made the meat with chipotle seasoning
    Guacamole
    Cheese

I took the tortillas and heated them for a bit, then made them in to soft tacos, but decided to toast the tortillas in the toaster oven for a bit.

That way I could watch TV and eat with no mess. (Dam I'm addicted to Doctor Who.) Well not mess other than the hot wheels, trains and power rangers that have setup base camp in the living room, and seem to be squatting there.

chicken tika masala, I'm learning how to make Indian food and it sure is cheaper than the restaraunts around here, plus I can make big batches and freeze them and add as much honey or yogurt as I want to the sauce.
I also make my own spaghetti with meat sauce and freeze it for lazy days, it heats up fast and tastes the same as the day I cooked it!
Please don't lick me, it tickles..

^^^This is my next dish. My tandoori chicken fucking rocked the house, it is soooo good, I am glad I made three pounds of it so I could freeze a bunch for later. The sauce is so good, but next time I think I am gonna add more yogurt cause after a few bites it gets really hot.

Do you live alone? Because I do, and I find that cooking at home is actually more expensive than buying prepared meals.

    Am I crazy?

I love to cook, but I often find that I'll spend 40 or 50 bucks on the ingredients for a single meal. Is it just me?

^Me too. It depends what I'm cooking, though. For example, if I already have the spices, it's cheaper.

As for what I've been cooking, I've been living off of egg drop soup for the past couple of days.

Wow, what the hell are you girls making that costs that much? I cook most of my meals at home and spend less than $50 a week on groceries when it's just me. I very rarely eat prepackaged food.

Omg! Some of you girls need to learn how to cook! No offense.

Yesterday, I started cooking dinner at 5 AM. I put a 12 pound brisket in the smoker (it takes an hour a pound), cooked up some beans with green chilies, a whole mess of greens, and some mexican cornbread.

BTW A slow cooker can be a dancers best friend! I'm always hungry after work, so I load up my slow cooker before work, set it on low and 10 hours later.....yummy!

I do have a bunch of recipes that I can share that are not instant food, I cook from scratch. I have recipes for beginners and experts.

I find it expensive to cook as well. I still do it, but it's expensive. Especially because I try to cook organic and use lots of veggies. Hello 150 dollar a week food bill..

The lunch I made yesterday and today was so nutritious, tasty, and CHEAP that I have to share it...

Bring a pot of water to boil, add 1 cup whole-wheat pasta. Set the timer for 10 minutes.

Peel a carrot and slice it.
Peel and chop a couple cloves of fresh garlic.
Cube some protein (yesterday a plain frozen chicken tender, today extra-firm tofu; any meat works)
Set out the bag of pre-washed baby spinach and a jar of spaghetti sauce.

Swirl olive oil into a skillet; saute the meat/tofu and garlic. Sprinkle with balsamic vinegar while they cook. Once they're cooked, add the carrots, and pour in a little red wine and swirl it around until almost all the liquid evaporates out (you can use another liquid if you don't have cooking wine handy). Throw in a few handfuls of baby spinach and saute until wilted. Pour in just enough spaghetti sauce to coat the food. By this point, the pasta should be done; drain it, put it in a bowl, and dump the goodies on top. Delicious, healthy, filling, takes 10 minutes, and it costs VERY little!
