Default Is this a gallbladder attack?

I woke up this morning with intense sharp pain just under my rib cage on my right side. It hurt so bad I was doubled over to walk. Its slowly gotten better as the day has worn on but it still hurts and is down to a dull ache.

If I push on the spot that hurts, it sets off a spasm of sharp pain horizontally across my stomach.

I cant get in to the doctor today, however if it starts hurting that badly again I am going to the ER

It sounds more like gas..gallbladder would be more centralized(trust me!)

Do you have a fever? If you do..get to the hospital NOW..it could be your appendix

Your gallbladder sits in the right upper quadrant slightly under the ribcage. Does anything besides pressing on it makes it worse (like greasy foods)? How is your appetite? Are you nauseated or vomiting? Do you have a fever? It's possible you have an impacted gallstone vs an infected gallstone. Typical appendicitis starts around your navel and eventually shifts to the right lower part of your abdomen.

It's impossible to diagnose over the internet without laying hands on your abdomen. At bare minimum, someone needs to check your CBC, liver enzymes and an ultrasound of your gallbladder.

Odd..whenever I get a gallbladder attack its straight through the center of my gut...even though the organ itself if off center.
It's usually accompanied by a pancreatic attack though..maybe thats why

Yeah...pancreatitis usually hurts in the middle and radiates straight through to the back. Is there a particular reason you are keeping your gallbladder if it causes you so much trouble?

Gallbladders are part of your body, they're there for a reason, even if western medicine doesn't acknowledge it.

To the OP, it would be weird to just wake up with gall bladder pain. You should probably go to the ER and get an ultrasound. But don't let them cut out your gallbladder unless you fully understand it and want to do it.

My gallbladder isnt the main cause of the problems...my pancreas is. Sometimes when my pancreas acts up,it triggers my gallbladder to also. I'm on a LOT of meds to keep it under control. I'd rather not have surgery if I can help it. Esp since it would only alleviate a small amount of the problem.

Cameron - gotcha - You have my full sympathy. Pancreatitis is a horrible disease and you must be a very strong woman to be dealing with it and continuing to work.

Lena - Western medicine fully acknowledges that the gallbladder functions to store and concentrate bile. Is there some other function that I'm not aware of? I was responding to Cameron's post, not suggesting that the OP get her gallbladder removed without cause. I apologize if that caused any confusion.

Actually its MUCH better now that I'm on meds to control it. I spent almost 20 years being misdiagnosed with the problem getting exponentially worse. I, only a year or two ago FINALLY found a Dr. who diagnosed me correctly and figured out a cocktail that keeps me under control @ 85% of the time.

    (sorry for the threadjack!)

I had my gallbladder removed about 10 years ago and the first attack I had woke me up from a very sound sleep. The attacks continued for over a year finally resulting in emergency surgery. (the stones had started to try to pass through the duct to my liver, making my liver sick) I started to turn yellow (jundice)

Like the other posters stated the pain was very centralized and could be felt in front as well as between my shoulder blades. There was not any comfortable positions ie. that would lessen the pain, only after it passed through the duct did the pain start to go away. (the pain is cause by the stone getting stuck trying to pass through)

In todays world of medicine they can now bust up the stones with a laser so that the smaller stones can pass through with minimal pain. So there is no need for removal.

Don't wait too long (as I did, no insurance) the stones just got bigger and grew in numbers. The largest being the size of a large gumball. If the pain persists or you experience another attack, seek a Dr. advice immediately, (if not only to find the cause of the pain)but, as damage could occur to your other organs.

    Good Luck,
