As far as I'm concerned to go back on a pont, music videos were always about promotion, nothing else, yes it could be done in different ways, but end results were always the same, records companies put up $$$ for a video, video gets played on MTV, thus selling more albums.

Actaully if I recall correctly, one of the founding companies was actually a credit-card company.

I do admit I have a soft-spot for "remote Control"
I used to actually like Road Rules and the Real World but, their whole line up is reality shows now ! I do have to admit that some of them are on point, like maybe 2-3..The rest suck ! Esp. those damned infernos, I'm tired of Tina and the blonde chick, Eric and all of their asses.
I was at the gym today and decided to flip the channel on the treadmill to MTV and I was shocked to see they've added even MORE reality shows to the line up.

On a side note..I forgot the name of the company who owns MTV but, I do know that they own BET too.. They've went reality show crazy too.

    I miss old MTV..
*sings I want my, I want my, I want my MTV*

I wanted to add..I did a search an Viacom owns MTV.

You make a good point here. Got me thinking..... since the record labels have taken a financial hit as of late, there's not as much money available to pay to the station to air all videos. Thus, a shortage of videos in circulation. So to fill the space...reality programming. Just a hypothesis though, probably flawed in theory.

But also, television programming lasts longer than a music video (30 minutes compared to 3 or 4 minutes). From an advertising standpoint, keeps the viewers locked to the station longer, attracting money from product advertisements. Since people are more likely to channel surf after or during a music video. Longer programs are more addicting and have more hold over the viewer.

^^^^ true, but I was more thinking that while there are advertising $$$ to be made, don't think that record companies didn't pay MTV to air videos, they most certainly did as it I do not think they could be considered Pay for Play.

Also I would say the videos themselves are advertisements for the record labels....

I kinda agree w/ your first paragraph but, MTV also has I think 3 other stations devoted to music videos.

For the second part, you're right on..plus MTV rakes in revenue from the dvd sales of all their damn reality shows.

MTV isn't relevant to me, but I'm 94 years old, so who cares? It's irrelevant enough that it's not even on the list of channels that I've activated (to paraphrase Pink Floyd, "I got 228 channels of shit on the TV to choose from"). I can't watch the Real World (or any "reality" show, for that matter). Too much self-absorption, faux drama, and preening.

If I want relevance to me in music videos, I'll tune in to "Pop Up Videos" on VH1 every eight or ten months.

However, I'd appreciate you guys keeping up the dialogue. Since I want to be cool and mindful of trends, but I can't actually stand to engage in them, I can learn from you youngsters.

I'm trying to remember if I was obsessed with music when I was a youngen. Our TV options were limited...like American Bandstand and Soul Train. I did stand in line for a few minutes to buy Sgt Peppers the day it was released. But otherwise, I didn't focus all that much on music.

My dad wouldn't let me grow sideburns much less watch that hippy stuff. In fact, I could only play my Beatles albums at my friends house. My dad was convinced they were out to destroy civilization as we know it.

Turn to some of your other popular longtime cable channels and you'll see that they neither are what they were 15-20 years ago. Look at USA for instance. They used to have some fun alternative programming on there. Now they pretty much just rehash old TV shows and movies. Headline news used to be a great way to catch up on world events in 30 minutes. Now its a rant forum for conformist whiners like Glenn Beck and Nancy Grace. Spike TV? Hell ten years ago that was a country music channel.

As for MTV, its always been sucky corporate gobbily-goo, even back in the glory days when they DID play videos.

I didn't really mind when they mixed in some comedy, cartoons or some original programming. But then the "Real World" reality TV bullshit started taking over the entire network like cudzu, even to the point where such juvenile crap is on MTV's sister networks now, and the big three networks began airing their own clones. I don't watch much VH1 anymore either if you can't tell.

Damn....I would've guessed FBR as being a big fan of the solid gold dancers.

I remember MTV when it was just a baby. I remember being like 7 or 8 watchign Mark Goodman and Martha Quinn and Def Leppard Videos and such. That's all they did was play videos. It was cool. I didn't mind the shows (Beavis n' Butthead, etc. ) but then it seems like the channel devoted itself more to reality shows than music videos.

    I miss the videos.

I haven't watched MTV in ages. But I did meet their president while at work

I know you're paraphrasing Mr Zeno, but Pink Floyd only had 13 channels of shit on the TV to choose from.
