Default Nude shoot. How do I know it's legit?

So I looked up gigs on craigslist and there is a website seeing it needs models to do some glamour shots, including topless and implied nude.

I emailed him about it. He emailed me back asking what I'm comfortable with etc.

How do I know it's legit? There is a website and all but I am paranoid. Has anybody done something like this?

Make him give you references, and if you go take somebody with you. Those are simple things that will help you weed out the weirdos from the actual photographers.

*In my experience half the people on craigslist are weirdos looking for free naked pics.*

Agree with gingerlee. She is wise.

Ask for samples and online portfolios of other work. Ask for references of other models. Ask for specific concepts. Ask to see the MRF (model release form).

I guess this is relevant to this thread: how would someone know that their references are legit?

Thank you both. I am new to this but I don't want to look naive and not knowing what I am doing.

    Here is the ad:
Good looking girls wanted, body weight does not matter!
I am looking for a large chested female ages 18 to 35 to model for me. It would be a Glamour Photo shoot, but no nudity is required. Topless and implied nude would be a part of the shoot, but nothing you are uncomfortable with. There is also no need to be thin, if you have a few extra pounds that is fine, don't worry about weight, don't worry too much about looks. Shoot me a response with a photo, and I will get back to you. PLEASE SEND A PHOTO. Nude photos are not required.
    www.lanternphoto.com

    Serious interests only, please.

    I sent this email:
    Hello,
I saw your advertisement looking for women to do photoshoots for. I have a picture link
listed below, and you did specify large chested so just FYI I am a 36D.
    http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b9...bon05/nose.jpg
    Thanks

I got an auto reply which I thought was kind of unprofessional, saying that he was out of the office or whatever that day. Just the wording kind of bothered me, like the fact that it ended with "Peace, man!"

    Then tonight I got this:

    Bonnie,

Thank you for your interest. I am definitely interested in doing a photo shoot with you. Can you tell me more about your schedule and what types of photos you are interested in and comfortable with and we can go from there, Thanks, Frank

Will ask him more questions and tell bf about it and take him with.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention I'm just not all that impressed with his work. Example:

I mean it's okayyyy... better than I could do, but I've definitely seen better.

    But it's a start?

i checked out his page, and i'll be honest- this man is terrible. not only does he choose occasionally non-photogenic models to display on his website, but his poses, use of lighting, direction, etc., are awful. i'd skip this. he lacks a good eye- you could do much better.

if you want to get into modeling, i would much rather START with a TFP (time for prints... i.e. non-paid) session with a GOOD photographer for the experience and the beginning of a portfolio than get paid for a crappy shoot.

^^Agreed. He has very few models in the photographs. Yes, I do think that when new TFP would be a way to go because it benefits both of you and not just him.

Yeah I agree. Thing is though, I don't really want to model or anything, I just want money. So my main worry is just about getting naked with a strange guy

Still, yeah. I'd feel way better about it if he was a better photographer.

I wonder if I should check out the art department at the local uni to see if they need somebody...

Well, I wouldn't call him "terrible".... but he's very ordinary. Nothing in his work stands out from anyone else with a consumer camera and a willingness to work it a bit.

What good is a "start" if the start is unimpressive? I'm positive you can do better.

Do you have any photos? I have no doubt that with a little bit of digging, you can get a shoot with an accomplished hobbyist/newb who can get you pictures that both of you can use. PM if you're curious.

you're right- sorry- it was obvious he was a portrait photog, and not a glamour one. but no, he wasn't truly HORRIble, i exaggerated.. a leetle bit...

Oh, we understand, Embyr. If he was portraying himself as a professional, it would be horrible. As a plain ol' camera guy, he's ordinary. Nothing in his compositions, exposures, posturing, technical capabilities, his general eye, anything else, stand out.

There are other red flags in his ad that stand out to me, not that he's dangerous, but a waste of time. Really... move on. Give him the courtesy of a "thanks but no thanks," and move on.

Totally agree. This guy pretty much sucks. Just tell him the 'thanks but no thanks' like Jay did and look somewhere else.

BonBon, I understand about wanting to make money, but if you end up on his site and look really bad, it doesn't give you the best start in the modeling world. First impressions are important, because you never know who will see those pics.

As a glamour photographer, first thing you do is ask for proof of insurance. If you are a scammer, you wouldn't waste money on insurance would you? Also, his work sucks (sorry) so I'd pass. One of the reasons to do a nude photoshoot is to have a shot for your portfolio, so if the shot sucks, you wasted your time. Unless they are paying you BIG money, with a model release in YOUR favor, skip it.

    My work....

    ^^Nice!

I just found somebody on facebook who is looking for models to take photos of. He specifically said no pay but model can keep photos and if he does need paid models than they would be put on the list. His work is much better.

Once again, I am not trying to get into modeling, just trying to make money.

    Should I do that first/instead?

Modeling with the hope to make money (instead of starting a career) can be a slippery slope. What kind of money are you expecting to make? Sometimes money can make you do things that you might regret later in life.

BTW, Nirvanaib - love that photo!

    Thanks for the compliments!

There are two steps in modeling, and they are catch 22 steps.

First, doing it for free for photos, building your portfolio, and then applying for paid gigs. Almost no real place that requires models will hire you without a diverse portfolio (not stocks lol).

Now, you CAN pay a photographer to shoot you for you, and make a portfolio, but a real photog is expensive for this sort of work (I usually charge about $1500 PER photo, and you need 20-25 of them.

After you have your book, THEN you can apply for gigs, and without being signed at an agency, your DAY rate (not per hour) will be no more than $250. 99% of the time, it's just not worth it for people.

    Quoted for truth.

I didn't make jack shit for money when I started doing this, I had to prove I was worth shooting to the photographers that were worth shooting with. I wanted to make money, but I had to spend it first.

If you start out as a total newbie wanting paid shoots I don't know what kind of photographers you are going to end up working with. There are a lot of people feeding off the desperation of girls wanting to make money right off the bat, and some of them are creepy. I had a guy threaten to kill me (like, detailed things he would do) when I told him my limits and he didn't like them.

People are shady, and are only looking out for themselves.

If your looking for TFP ( trade for pics ) why not try Model mayhem or One model place?

Craigs list is sketchy at best and full of perverts. The guy that got arrested in Portland ( correct me if I'm worng here ) just proves it.

Nirvanaib.. very pretty. I like the use of the color against a dark background - really makes her eyes pop.

I agree. I have had a LOT of success with both TFP and paid shoots on modelmayhem.com

Listen, you all have a talent for evaluating people...just the nature of the job, and you all have the best creep-o-meter you can get. So, first of all, a real photographer will meet with you WITH THE PERSON WHO HIRED HIM. The person paying him has the final say in the shot, so if they are not happy, the photographer wasted his time with you, and in this business, time really is money. So, if you see an ad you like, go for some coffee, in a public space or A REAL studio, and talk to them. Ask what the photos will be used for. Ask for the pay. Ask for photo rights (who gets em), ask for prints, etc. If I told you to come dance at my club, would you just come dressed up ready to go, or would you come, investigate, evaluate, etc? Same goes with modeling.

If you are really serious about modeling, I would suggest you learn a little bit about the biz (modeling AND photography). TFP is fine sometimes, but again, it depends on the photo. Will the photo help someone profit? If so, GET YOURS! Get paid. Your face/body is SELLING the product, and is lining their pockets, so you should get a piece as well. Also, if you really want to get into it, try to hop into an agency. A lot of gigs simply wont hire people from something like Modelmayhem, and the amount of gigs you get greately increases. And please take no offense to this, as Im sure you are very attractive, but many girls think you need to look like Cindy Crawford to get signed with an agency. While this may be true for Elite or IMG, there are plenty of other agencies that sign attractive girls that aren't rail thin 6'3" walking corpses. Best of luck to you.

Since you guys like my work...a couple more to share....

PRETTY! I like the last one, nice use of light and shadow..

Also as a side note,, Model Mayhem seems to have issues with adult work, since they kicked me off - but still see fit to use my photos.
