Default My hair won't stay RED ! Any suggestions ?

For whatever reason my hair has now decided to reject the color red..
I've been dying ( w/ semi-permanent color) my hair for a few years now. My natural color is blonde, which I recently went back to for a couple of mths.
Anyway, I dyed my hair and the color just washed right out which left me back blonde..Then I went back to Sally's found another brand that I never use but, the colors were pretty.. I mixed 3 different shades of red together and 1 clear (for shine) bottle, I ended up w/ the most amazing red and I just knew my hair was going to rock tonight for work...Uhhh yeah right ! The color mostly faded and my hair is fucking PINK, it's a cool pink but not anything I can sport to the club !!!
    WTF is happening ??

Should I try to dye it again in the morning ?? There is no way I can do it tonight and still make it in. Or should I wait, give my hair a rest for a couple of days and rock a wig ? Any suggestions, except totally off the point ones, are welcomed !

Maybe try henna? My hair is naturally a copper color but it bleaches out to a freaky clown orange color during summer, so I use henna to deepen the shade. It's a pain in the ass to put in, but IMO it's worth it. You get a long lasting red color that doesn't fry your hair.

Check out www.hennaforhair.com for more info.

Rock the pink hair tonight and give your hair a rest. The one time I dyed my hair twice in a 24 hour period, I was still using heavy conditioner a month later to repair the damage.

Well, first off, semi-perm dyes aren't meant for long use, so they fade quickly. They're best to darken your original tone, such as going to a darker blonde, they'r enot great for changing your color entirely. Second, red is the hardest color to maintain, as it fades the fastest.

I think it came out pink because of the shine one you added. That probably diluted it, and usually shine enhancers contain a lot of silicone and oils, which makes your hair resistant to color sticking.

I would use a permanent dye, and if you are uncomfortable, go to a salon so you can specify exactly what you want; they should be able to correctively color over the pink and achieve what you want.

Once you get the color you want, I would use Artec color shampoo and conditioner in red (another member here recommended it to me). It contains small amounts of semi-perm color so that your hair is enhanced and maintained.

It is because of you going back blonde for awhile. Red is the hardest color to keep in your hair especially if you have previously bleached it. You will have to dye it a good 4-5 times for it to start to hold. You need major deep conditionings in between and yes you need to wait in between so you don't totally fry it. Rock some wigs for a little while and expect to lose a lot of the color for the next few dye jobs. By the way Hi. I have always been a "lurker" until now. I wanted to help

Reds are really, really tough. Maybe you could go to the salon and have it done right and than take care of the maitnence (sp?) yourself. Or aif you are trying to save money go to a beauty school and have it done. I'm not sure what part of CA you live in, but the Tony and Guy beauty schools are awesome and the instructors watch over the girls, so it's pretty safe!

I agree with what people above said, and also make sure you're using a mild shampoo made for hair dyes. Professional grade if you can afford it.

If you're using a demi permanent, you are not damaging the hair at all... feel free to continue to use it as often as needed.

If you're hair has been bleached, it will not hold color well, especially red. Permanent color is not nessacary and will only damage the hair and fade to a muddy or brassy tone. Your hair needs a few protein treatments to address porosity. Try Redken's CAT treatment. Then your hair needs to be properly filled with it's missing pigments in order to retain any desired shade. This requires multiple applications of demi permanent color and, most likely, a colorist.

Lastly, if you're using moisturizing shampoos STOP. You want to use a color retaining shampoo and conditioner for at least a week after a color service. Moisture "molecules" are too big and force out unstable color "molecules" resulting in faster fading.

Don't henna after chemical dying! It will probably look great over blonde, but over recently dyed hair it may turn green. Seriously. I'm not sure how long you have to wait, but I know the henna for hair website gives instructions on doing a test.

Will that work w/ blonde or should I say "pink" hair ??

I'm so nervous about doing anything to my hair right now..Last time my hair was colored twice in 24 hours it ended up black instead of light honey brown ! And that was from my professional colorist that I had been going to for years. I ended up using Metalex to remove most of the black but,I had to cut all my hair into a super short style because it was fried and brittle.
I'm not trying to relive that experience..esp. since my hair is the healtiest and longest it's been in ages.

I think you're right about the clear..I've added it in the past. to other mixes. But this was a new brand that I was using.

I actually started using semi permanent color on my colorist advice. He likes to use gentle products and he uses semi perm all the time. The problem is he
only likes to recolor hair every 4-6 months.. I can't have that much roots showing ! That's ultra tacky IMO. When I addressed that with him he told me to just use a semi perm color at home. I did and I LOVED the results.
This is the first time I had a problem.

I think my hair wants to be blonde for a while..I just want it back red.
I didn't bleach it back blonde, the color started to fade and I used Metalex (an oil) to remove the remaining color.
I'm probably going to give myself a deep condition and try it again today or tomorrow.

    What does CAT do ?
I've been moisturizing my hair every chance I can get (shampoos, leave-in treatments, deep conditioners, it's so silky ! I can't help myself ), so that probably played a huge part. My hair felt so dry when I rinsed out the color yesterday that I out of instinct grabbed a deep conditioner..That probably made it fade as much.

contrary to popular belief, demi-permanents work BETTER with reds than permanents do. Demi-permanents stain the cuticle, which has a better hold for red. Permanent lifts the cuticle, deposits color, and seals the cuticle back down, which with red, isn't neccesarily great. Red color molecules are larger than the others, thus they slip out of hair easier. I would suggest more demi-permanent dyes. They're not going to damage you, and they'll last better.

Question though....are you using one of those colors that's like crayola-red? Like a manic panic or whatever the Sally-brand of crayola colors are? Because those are made with food dyes; and are much more likely to slip out than other demi-permanents. They can look vibrant and amazing, but hair has to be porous to accept it (that's why they tell ya to bleach it first). So if that's what you're using, that would probably be the problem. My hair has gone pink this way before...

Otherwise, I'm at a loss......at Sally's, I'd suggest the Wella demi-permanent....(color charm maybe?), it's nice and conditioning, and it's always had decent staying power in my hair. I think there's a clairol one as well, with red-boosters available. Good luck!

Yep, it's simular Manic Panic..I used Beyond the Zone..I used Manic Panic the first time and it just rinsed right out ! Beyond the Zone at least left some color deposit.
I bought a kind that I've used before w/ good results. I think it's by Wella, I gotta find the bag. Just found it..I was wrong it's Jazzing by Clairol.
I think I can trust it to work, I just wish I could've kept that gorgeous red I concocted.
    Anyway, thanks for your advice.

Oops-sorry for the scaring! Just make sure you read the website well and definitely do the test. I did henna after chemical dyes, but I waited two months. Two ugly months. LOL BUT I had been using permanent dyes and I'm sure there's some diff.

Farrah, red is the hardest color to keep in your hair. I'd suggest getting it done professionally to the color you want and then use a Loreal shade.

My hair use to be red and Loreal was the best staying red I could find, for a DIY job.

Redkin extreme shampoos and conditioners are great for processed hair -
    Hope this helps some!

Kitsune hit the nail on the head, vibrant Manic type colors are typically semi permanent dyes which shampoo out way more quickly than demi color. When I had hot pink peek-a-boo highlights I had to Manic my hair almost every other shampoo. There is no way to keep it from fading other than shampooing less.

CAT is a treatment product in Redken's Extreme line that replenishes protein in the hair and evens porosity.

Wow, I didn't know Manic required that much upkeep.
That's probably why it just rinsed out. I'm going to redo my hair tomorrow,
hopefully the color stays put this time.

I dye my hair red, too...I so hate it when it fades. So do you mean to go get it professionally done first and then dying it yourself with the Loreal shade afterwards? Is the DIY dye supposed to seal the professional dye or something? DURRR! .....

Mily, kinda off topic, I'm concerned about making $$ in Hawaii w/ red hair.
I've always been blonde when I danced there. Do you think it'll be a problem ?
