Default Lost dog what should I feed him ?

When I got home from work I had what I assume to a lost dog laying in my back yard. He would not let me approach him, but he seems friendly just scared. He is very dirty and thin, but he has a red collar on. He has stayed in the yard for the last couple of hours. I would like to put something out for him to eat, but I know people food is not good for him.

I think turkey and one other meat are supposed to be ok for pets... but I think any kind of meat would be GREAT for him, given his condition. That's what wolves eat.

I would just put out some water and call the humane society. Then, put an ad up on your local craigslist about a found dog.

Boiled chicken or ground beef with rice. Make sure there are no bones in it. It will be filling for him, but shouldnt upset his stomach. Then call the HSUS to come get him if you dont want to keep him.

Thanks for the replies I have an extra boneless chicken breast I will give him. I have mixed emotions about calling the humane society. If the catch him and can find his owners great, but if they cant they will have to put him to sleep.

^Well, you can tell them that if the owners don't pick up the dog to contact you so YOU can take it.

If you wanna keep him and nurse him back to health, they sell stuff at pet stores for malnutrition dogs. It's a high nutrition/calorie paste and you put about 2 tablespoons over regular dog food.

Is this cruel ? I have an almost empty shed in my back yard. I am thinking of putting food and water in the shed and leaving the door open when he comes in shutting the door and locking him in until the humane society can come and pick him up. He will have food and water and shelter(it may rain tonight).

He has a collar and I think it has writing on hopefully a phone number. If anyone is curious he looks like a dirty Benji.

Does it have ventilation? Is it big enough that he can eat sleep and poo in sparate parts without soiling himself?

If so...then it is fine for tonight. But dont leave him in there too long(days).

How nice! I hope that either you keep him, or that his owners get in contact (saying he got lost or something, not that they threw him out)

Either way as someone mentioned, the shed should be ok only if its ventilated... if its a cool night, maybe a little blankie or towel for him to lay on?

you should also, when its not raining, put up posters of the found dog, but i was also thinking, if he was found so skinny and dirty, he might have runaway from a possibly neglecting/abusive home? So you might want to check out his parents and home before giving him back too.
Maybe you should keep him, you have the heart to help him, at least if you kept him, he will be treated well. =)
Also call the local vet, and ask them for help and suggestions. =)
I would not give him to the humane society, there are other organizations that do not put animals to sleep for not having a home. Petsmart has an organization that helps adopt homeless doggies and kitties .

Feed the dog, and he will probably warm up to you and lose his fear pretty quickly.

The normal humane society will kill him, unfortunately. They don't have much choice, it seems, other than to reduce the severe overpopulation of cats and dogs by drastic means.

I'd feed him a few days, and he probably won't go anywhere. Leave the shed door open, maybe, and the blanket is a good idea. If he's a good dog, he might start trying to get you to adopt him. You might want to.

I think it's cool you are taking care of him.

Default Update and asking for more advice.

A little late in coming, but this is what is happening now. I could not get the dog to go into the shed so I could not catch him. I called the local Humane Society, but they told me I need to call animal control because they had no way to pick him up.I called animal control and they could not catch him either. Apparently they scared him away because I did not see again for a couple weeks.

He has been back for a little over a week. I have been feeding him and giving him water, but he still does not trust me. We have a little game we play. I walk over toward him with food and water and he will stare at me and wag his tail cautiously then when I get about 10 yards from him he will sprint as fast as he can into the woods behind my house. When I go back into the house I will make a show of slamming the door a little harder then needed then I will go to the kitchen window and watch him try to be sneaky and come back eat his food. Although I cant get near him, I am getting more attached everyday.

I have posted signs in the neighborhood and posted ads in the local paper, but I have not had any replies. I realize although the weather has been really warm this year it could started to get cold at any time so something needs to be done soon. I guess I should call animal control again, but if they fail. He may run away again and not come back, and end up in a worse place. If he does get caught he will probably be unadoptable, because of his fear of people. So what do I do now?

i think you should adopt him. You can give him a better life. Maybe there is is a good reason why you are getting attached, and thats because he was sent to you somehow.

ASPCA does not put animals to sleep. Not sure if theyd be able to catch the doggie but its worth a try.

I don't know who good of a dog owner I would be since I live by myself and frequently work 10-12 hour days. Also at this point I can't do much more for him if I can't get within 10 yards of him.

As far as the ASPCA as far as I know there is not one in my area

I understand if you are gone for a long time, but animals can deal with being alone. Its going to take time and trust to get him to come to you.

I used to work with dogs and cats(PETSMART), if you have any questions about approaching him.
You could contact you local PETSMART. The work with an animal adoption agency, and i believe its the kind that wont put him to sleep, you should also consider calling them because the have dog trainers that can also give you suggestions.

Maybe you could advertise him on an animal forum

High protein dog food would be good for him as far as putting weight on. Be careful though. If he had a collar on he was obviously someone's pet. I'd put a lost and found out for him and if no one claims him keep him if you want. You just never know how long he's been on the "loose". He could have contracted worms, mites, parvo or even something more serious like rabies. Maybe have the humane society come out and help you get him to a vet if that is possible to have him checked to see if he has a microchip and for diseases and such.

I have a really shy dog and I know if she got lost and ended up in someone's yard, she'd probably act similar. I would probably continue feeding him but basically ignoring him and after a while he may or may not get over it.

Not all animal shelters put animals to sleep and depending on your area even then it's not a death sentence. In large urban areas animals tend to be put to sleep very quickly but in other places like my hometown an adoptable animal may be there for months.

And while he sounds safe in your yard, I'm of the opinion that euthanasia is better than starving or getting hit by a car, but that's a whole other can of worms.

Though you work, it sounds like putting food out is a big favor to him. If you were to adopt the dog and it actually became friendly and needing walks and stuff, then yeah you probably don't have time for him. But for now he sounds fine.

Kudos for feeding him. I'd suggest getting dog food since it sounds like he's sticking around, knowing you'll feed him.

if you do get to coax him into your house, then perhaps you could foster him for a while until you can find new parents?
10-12 hours a day out of the hosue isn't ideal but better that than him remain homeless?

you're such a sweetheart, i hope everything works out for him.
