Default i need a plan to help me eat healthy

when school starts it is soooo hard not to just eat junk food. it's faster to go through the drive thru when i'm tired & starving, and i eat too much because i have less chances to eat during the day. my schedule is jam packed. i started taking a lunch to my internship, but on school days( mon wed fri) i dont want to do that. but i cant eat at 8:30 and then not again til 4:30 when i get home. i tried taking snacky things today, a 100cal pack of goldfish, a special k bar, and a nutrigrain bar. i was finished them all by my first class and still hungry.

right now i just want to order a pizza. its the easy thing to do that requires no cooking (not that i have many groceries for cooking anyway) and i just love junk food. not to mention, i'm half italian, and i love to eat, period. i enjoy food & eating so it's harder to restrict myself.

plus, i am a VERY picky eater. so a lot of healthy foods have no appeal to me because i dont like certain textures and tastes. but i'm really trying to eat better because i feel so much better when i do. help!

The snacky things you mentioned would tide someone over in a rush, but for the amount of food you're getting, they have a lot of calories (and unnecessary carbs). Maybe it's best for you to just pack a sandwich ALONG with snacky things. That way, you can have a real meal but you won't be starving in between. Oh, and having dinner pre-made when you get home will probably stop you from grabbing something on the way home (since it would be a waste).

For example, when I'm at work, I found that I eat less if I have something that's REAL food (an entire salad or something), then I'm less likely to eat ALL of the little snacky things (like string chz, yogurt, oh, and little snack packs with carrot sticks and dip) that I'd brought along. I think it's because I feel like, "hey I just ate a couple of hours ago" instead of "omg, I haven't had real food since breakfast!" Hehe

You need to bring a lunch, like a sandwich and an apple. Load the sandwich up, too! Get whole-grain bread and slather it with mustard and hummus, and pile in some turkey, fresh raw baby spinach, sprouts, tomato slice, whatever veggies you can fit in it. You want to make sure you're getting an actual meal, not just some simple carbohydrates that you digest in an hour. Protein, fiber, and good fat will keep you feeling full for longer.

In the evenings, it takes very little time to bake chicken or fish and steam fresh veggies. Or you can make a stir-fry, or you can heat up a casserole you prepared on your day off and put in the fridge. Cooking doesn't have to be elaborate! One of the things I make that K gets very excited about, I'll squeeze a lemon wedge over a chicken breast, sprinkle it with oregano, and bake it for 25 minutes. Seriously NO effort and it tastes great. Don't be fooled by the Food Network.

^the problem with me cooking is i am literally running from one place to the next. sometimes i barely even have 25 minutes to let something cook! cooking things and saving them is a good idea. the only problem with that is i need to work on my self control, too. haha. a lot of times i eat more than i need to to full up because its there.

i do eat a lot of carbs though. its so bad. tomorrow i'm going to go grocery shopping (i've been saying that for a week though so im giving it my best shot!) and try and get some things i can take with me or that i'll *want* to cook.

its a big willpower issue. i looooove food, and a lot of it just isnt good for me.

There's always the Subway diet. I'm kind of on that right now.

Carbs themselves are not bad, but there's a difference between complex carbs and simple carbs. You want to shoot for whole grains, not white flour. White flour is pretty much sugar already and your body doesn't have to work to break it down, so it races right through. Whole grains are a bit harder to digest so they'll keep you from getting hungry again so quickly. For your snacks, instead of Goldfish, try a handful of Triscuits (whole grain, no flour) and a few slices of cheese (the fat and protein will fill you up more). You can carry that with you in a baggie just as easily as Goldfish.

When you get a day off, bake a whole pan of chicken breasts and steam a bunch of veg. You can put a chicken breast and steamed veggies in plastic bags and have them standing by in the fridge. They're usually good cold, but if you have access to a microwave you can heat them up too.

And if you have time to order a pizza, you have time to cook. It only takes ten minutes to stir-fry.

i went grocery shopping and got lots of healthy stuff! the only really bad thing i got was pumpkin ice cream bc i never tried it last year and i love pumpkin stuff

i got some chicken breasts to try and cook.. hopefully it wont be a disaster! and the only veg i really eat is broccoli so i got some of that.. plus some grapefruits & clementines & pineapple for fruit (i like sugary fruits.. better than nothing!) and some other random stuff.

What kinds of things do you like? We might be able to give you better suggestions on what to eat if we knew just how picky you are.

^ very picky. haha. i dont like a lot of healthy foods. i dont like wheat bread, i dont like ham, i dont like tomatoes. if i were to eat a sandwich it would be white bread or a wrap, with mustard, cheese, maybe lettuce, and turkey. nothing else.

i dont like many veggies. i'll eat broccoli and very rarely carrots but they have to have ranch dressing.

i eat a lot of little kid things, haha. mac & cheese, chicken noodle soup but only campbells, grilled cheese. not very healthy foods!

I was raised on white and converted 7 years ago when i had my first child becuse thats what all the child nutrion books said was best now i think white bread tastes like eating a sponge. I understand you don't like health food I myself am a healh food nut lol i live for this shit u might like makeing little pizzas with whole grain enlish muffins tomato sause and 2%milk fat cheese this is a great snack or meal with a veggie. Sorry to go into such detail about this I honelsty want to go into the nutrtion field ill get off my whole grain soap box now.

Wow we are twins Britt. My picky eating is a huge deal- it cuts out so much of the healthy meals. I don't like ham, turkey, most deli meats- I hate wheat bread (I would faster cut bread out of my diet completelyvthan eat that).

I stopped eating white bread- I like English muffins and bagels. But a whole wheat bagel?? Yuck! I don't eat tuna, most fish, salad....I could go on and on. I feel hopeless. :-(

Well MHO is that you should just suck it up and try different foods prepared different ways. Cooking changes the texture of food very much. You'll be amazed how different things can taste.

My best advice is to cook something in your off time and put it into portioned controlled storage containers. Then, when you leave in the morning just take one out along with an orange/banana/apple/grapefruit (any fruit with its own wrapper) along with you. I love eating yogurt on the go. Light yoplait yogurt is yummy just don't leave it out too long.

heres a list of 8 things you should have everyday.. add other stuff and take vitamins and all ..but it narrows it down so its not so overwhelming

    oatmeal
    black beans
    carrots
    spinach
    tomatoes
    kefir of live culture yogurt
    blueberries
    walnuts

for me i make a SMALL juice glass size smoothie each morning with blueberries.. frozen and a splash of kefir.. and i buy carrot juice and freeze in an ice cube tray so add one cube of that

to get in my oatmeal i add good quality granola which has oatmeal flakes and add good chocolate and walnuts.. so a handful of this and you get the oatmeal and walnuts

i use a good oil and saute onions, garlic, tomato and spinach and add a few cans of good quality black beans and spices.. this can be added to whatever you like to eat like in an omelet or make a burrito with it.. im sure you can take it and mash it and add breadcrumbs and an egg to make a burger

you need variety but i thought this was a good base.. the website that talked about it seemed pretty sound

Making excuses for poor eating is not needed. Break that bad habit and really try to change to eat healthy. If that's what you want to do.

the liking to eat thing isnt exactly an excuse. i'm part italian, like i said, that's a cultural thing. holidays, family get togethers, anything, they all involve and focus on food. some people dont like to eat, its not a big thing for them, they just eat for nutrition. some people like eating. i like to eat the same way some people like to read books or work out.

I have the same problems. I am a very picker eater and a bad cook, fast food is so much more tasty, quick, cheap and just plain easier. A bag or two of candy for breakfast and lunch, Taco Bell or God-knows-what for dinner... Luckily my metabolism is still fast, but I know it probably won't always be! And I'm not putting any nutrients into my body at all. I also get hungry super-quick and it takes a ton of food to quiet my grumbling stomach.

I hate apples, hummus, spinach, mustard, tomatos, lettuce... My sandwich would basically be the cold cuts and whole wheat bread. And it would have to be a huge sandwich or multiple ones to fill me up, and aren't cold cuts not that good for you? I would have to spend a ton of $$$ on a few pounds of the healthy stuff. Seven bucks at Taco Bell is so filling lol.....

I only like fried fish and chicken lol, and I'm not into the kinds of vegetables that can be steamed. I hate casseroles too! What does an ultra picky person like me eat??

and more long windedness but i know eating healthy is only fun if you are into health stuff.. and i am but im just quirky.. but for the rest of the world its a royal pain and probably tastes like crap
but .. for looks sake at least junky stuff really will take its toll..
one of my best friends had a slammin body never worked out and ate cocoa puffs and stuff from the vending machine.. she ate like a little kid.. she was tight and had great skin and hair i thought she was a freak of nature
but i lost contact with her and then saw her temping at my job.. this would be about 4 years later.. she was still "slim" but her once plump butt just turned wide and when she sat down she just spread.. she was in her 20's when she was tight.. and when i saw her she was maybe 32.. ive always heard your thirties will reflect how you took care of yourself in your 20's .. so even if you dont like anything posted here dont give up on at least trying to find good for you foods.. you will find your nitch even if it is finding 3 things that are good for you and just eating them everyday and screwing everything else

I love broccoli, but it has to be steamed and sopping-wet with butter, and even then I only eat the flowery top.
