    that gets carsick?

I'm OK if I'm actually driving, but I get carsick as a passenger pretty frequently and it sucks. I take Dramamine sometimes, but it knocks me out and I'm sleepy all the rest of the day.

Please tell me I'm not alone; all of my family says I'm the only one they've ever heard of that gets carsick and it makes me feel like a freak

No! I get carsick all the time! like you, i'm fine if driving, but i can NOT sit in the back of a car without getting sick. i'm usually ok in the passenger side, unless i try to read or something, then i get really sick.

my middle son gets carsick, he can't sit in the very back of the minivan..he has to sit in the middle, but even then can get sick. so i lay the front seat down as if he were sitting in the front.

and no you're not crazy or alone! millions of people get carsick, it's pretty common!

The way my family talks about it, you'd think that it was all in my head! I don't LIKE being carsick; it just happens!

I even get carsick in the passenger's seat. Usually reading makes me sick too, but once in a blue moon I can read and not get sick. I can never predict it.

I was wondering why carsickness even happens? It doesn't happen when I drive, so...what?

I get carsick too, especially in cars as opposed to trucks. Only when I am the passenger. It helps not to read, that makes it worse for me. I don't know if it's the same ingredient as Dramamine but i take a generic motion sickness pill from CVS, it doesnt make me tired at all.

Interesting! Read this, from wikipedia (questionable, i know)

"The most common hypothesis for the cause of motion sickness is that it evolved as a defense mechanism against neurotoxins.[6] The area postrema in the brain is responsible for inducing vomiting when poisons are detected, and for resolving conflicts between vision and balance. When feeling motion but not seeing it (for example, in a ship with no windows), the inner ear transmits to the brain that it senses motion, but the eyes tell the brain that everything is still. As a result of the disconcordance, the brain will come to the conclusion that one of them is hallucinating and further conclude that the hallucination is due to poison ingestion. The brain responds by inducing vomiting, to clear the supposed toxin."

I always get carsick AND I like to read when I'm the passenger. Looking out the window fairly often helps. Supposedly concentrating on the horizon does as well.

In addition, I alway hypothesized that the reason people don't usually get carsick while driving is because they are in control of the movement, and therefore there isn't a disconnect. Also, I have noticed that some control-freak type of people are more likely to be carsick as a passenger than more laid back types, and the state of not being in control of the situation is upsetting to them. this may be a confounding condition, though, and not the actual cause.

if i'm in the passenger seat and get sick, i roll down the window, even if it's raining and stick my head out and close my eyes...staring straight ahead works too

I get car sick sometimes (more on the city bus actually) but my mom does really bad.

I read somewhere that it happens when you are reading because your eyes are focused on the book which is not moving but peripherally you see the outside stuff whizzing by and your body feels movement so you get sick.

Anyway have you ever trued wearing Sea-Bands? They are little wrist bands that apply pressure to some point in your arm and it is supposed to help motion sickness. Apparently they really work quite well.

I often get car sick on long rides, 2+ hours. I'll usually try to buy the motion sickness pills. Then the driver sometimes gets mad at me if I'm their only company, cause those pills knock me out hard.

The worst I had it was when I was stuck in the back of a minivan w/ those windows that only crack open & it was over 90 degrees outside & very humid. Plus when we'd stopped at the gas station I ate a sausage dog w peppers. So not to long after that I got really sick & someone handed me a plastic shopping bag to puke in. The guys in the car thought it was hilarious.

Buy some Dramamine at Walmart. It prevents motion sickness and it does really work. Make sure you get the non-drowsy ones for your turn to drive.

But I only saw one kind of Dramamine at Walgreens. it said drowsiness was possible. Boy was it ever for me!

I hate that reading makes it worse. I get bored when I'm not driving!

You could always get an audiobook. I make sure to get one every time I have to road trip with my mom, lol. They can put you to sleep sometimes tho. But they're a good way to keep from getting bored and entertaining w/o having to constantly talk to each other.

I can never read in the car, I get dizzy so fast.
