Please take her to the vet right away! Diarrhea can kill some animals in a small amount of time. The vet can give her a diagnosis that we cannot give. Smaller dogs are fragile sometimes. This could be possibly serious. Do not hesitate, please please call the vet right now! But while she does have diarrhea before u take her, make sure she has fresh water available and monitor her behavior! Even write it down for the vet to see.

Go to the vet, right now. Seriously, little dogs have weird needs, so just take him and get him checked out.![]()

I have a large puppy-german shepard/ aussie cross. 6 months old.
He had the same issue a few weeks ago. He needed antibiotics. I was quite superised what it cost me, not much at all... 60 for the vet to check him and 25 for the pills.
Now only if I can get his other issues fixed so easily and cheaply. He has destructive habbits- tearing everything up and making a mess of it. i have spent a lot of time and money trying to iron out his issues.
Well, I just got back from the emergency vet and she has bladder stones and kidney failure. Her blood glucose was 28 when I got her to the vet, she wouldn't have made it through the night. She apparantly was upset on her stomach because she was in pain and defecated on herself because she was in too much pain to actually move. She isn't quite stable enough for surgery now but hopefully by morning she'll be more stable.

Im saying prayers for baby!
Oh no! I hope she's better soon!
Sending positive vibes for your doggy.
I am very glad you took her to the animal hospital

i am so sorry!
She is going through surgery today? For the stones?
Please update. I will cross my fingers for her!
Yes, I just got home. I picked her up from the emergency clinic and took her to a vet who could remove the stones. She was a wee bit more spry this morning but not much. Her blood glucose is normal now at least, so she isn't as dehydrated as she was. She had a bladder catheter in and her urine was bloody. I felt really bad for her. They said they would be finished with her surgery later in the afternoon and she will need to stay overnight. They said she should be fine. They said they will send the stones off to see what is causing them.
I am really upset and stressed out over this. I missed another day of school today. I am just going to try to get a doctors note to say I was sick, which I sort of am. Hopefully, they will let me come back. I have already missed quite a bit because of my own illnesses which I am seeing a specialist for at the end of the month. Some people aren't as understanding when it comes to pets being ill. Thanks so much for the kind words and continue to keep us in your thoughts.

Awww, sends hugs to her and to you. My furbaby Jester got rushed in with realy bad colitis last november, really shook me up. Its awful isnt it?
Sounds like she will be coming home to rest soon though.

Poor little doggie, I hope she has a speedy recovery! Shih Tzus are adorable--I'm not normally a fan of the itty bitty doggies so much (even though I love kitties, lol--I just tend to like labs and such for dogs), but my mom had one that was the sweetest, coolest dog ever.
Thank god you took her in when you did, it sounds like she'll be fine, though. So maybe you can relax a bit, like you need more stress right now, lol. I'm sure you'll feel much better when she comes home!

oh that's terrible! I hope she feels better soon. Kidney failure at 2 years old??? Wasn't that what all that tainted pet food was causing?
Sending good healing vibes her way...
as an aside, has she been spayed? If not and you don't breed her, you may want to talk to your vet about that. I almost lost my pom recently because she wasn't spayed.
good luck to you and the pupper.
Please don't lick me, it tickles..
I am SO GLAD that Pookie and GingerLee told you to take her to the vet! You SWers may have saved GreenIdLady's pup!!!
GIL- I hope your doggy ends up ok!

I'm sending out positive thoughts to make sure your pup makes a full recovery!!
Poor little baby, I hope she's okay! It's so hard to see our babies sick.

oy! bad week for shih tzus. both of mine are ill too. i really hope your lil guy stays strong and recovers quickly.![]()
Love it!
About missing school, be honest with your professors. I went through some serious medical shit with my cat a few semesters ago, right in the middle of midterms, but I talked to each of my profs and explained to them the situation (with the actual documentation in hand) and they were extremely understanding.
Also, GOOD LUCK!
I hope the little munchkin comes out of this just fine.
I don't think it's the dog food because my other dog eats it and she is fine. Her kidney failure was a result of the bladder stones they removed yesterday. Her kidney function panel is back to normal now. However, she won't eat and when they force feed her she throws it back up. She has diarrhea as well. Her potassium is low now and they are giving her potassium in her IV fluid. Plus her blood glucose is low as well. They are giving her some dextrose in her IV fluid for that. Her albumin is low and her platelet count is a bit off. She has a UTI I guess from all the trauma her bladder has been under with the stones. They are also giving her antibiotics. I went to see her this morning. She looked very depressed and weak. I tried to feed her some turkey which is her favorite food and she didn't respond to it at all. I have been pretty upset all day. She is my life and my best little friend. They are doing all they can for her and I am going to go see her again tomorrow morning. I appreciate all the good vibes and prayers. Keep them coming.
She was a show dog and a very nice one. I wanted to breed her but if she does have health problems I will get her spayed once she has recovered.
I'm glad they are understanding about it at school. I would do anything for my dog. Is she diabetic? I know someone with a diabetic Shih Tzu. I dunno that that causes the problems she has but I was just wondering.

GI, I'm sure she is still under the weather, anything to do with the kidneys can make anyone/anything miserable. Once her kidney function gets back to normal, I'm sure she'll pep back up....it may take a few days but I'm sure she'll be fine...
She's not diabetic, I think it's because she hasn't ate. I went to see her this morning and she looks a lot better. She gave me a kiss. That made me really happy and she walked with me a bit. She still won't eat anything. So, hopefully she'll eat soon and I can bring her home.
